Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces Grant Opportunity

Imagine the different things your community could do and the different ways you could engage your patrons, if only your library space wasn't, well.... your library space. Then read on for an exciting announcement of a new grant from OCLC! Applications are now being accepted for the Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces grant. A smart space is one that fosters social connections allowing a community to discover active learning opportunities in their library. Fifteen small public libraries (serving communities with fewer than 25,000 people) will be selected to receive instructional and material support to engage their communities in a space transformation process that supports active learning at the library. Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces<http://oc.lc/smartspaces> is a two year project funded by a National Leadership Grant from Institute of Museum and Library Services<http://www.imls.gov/>. Selected libraries will participate in an online orientation and community of practice facilitated by WebJunction, OCLC's public library program. They will work with each other and their communities to reimagine and reconfigure their library spaces as hubs of active learning and engagement. Hi Everyone, Thank you so much for the feedback and responses to my questions! It appears that most places haven't had an issue, which puts me at ease a bit. I also appreciate all of the ideas about activities for a Halloween event, as well as the resources and templates for dealing with patron complaints about any event. While they have not challenged the books, I am concerned that they might complain or challenge the event. I was just wondering if any other libraries have had this come up. Any help is appreciated! Hello All: The libraries of St. Joseph County Michigan held our 11th annual One Book One County author event this last Thursday. (www.OneBookOneCounty.org) We had an incredible turnout and I wanted to share that those in attendance were excited to see her. 550 people showed up, which is high compared to prior years’ events. Our Speaker/Author this year was Mahtob Mahmoody who authored "My Name is Mahtob", (www.MyNameisMahtob.com) She is The daughter from the 1987 book "Not Without My Daughter."
