Hello fellow library advocates! Literacy is a top priority in Michigan! The proposed 2026 Senate PreK-12 School Aid Budget includes funding for school libraries (Section 35e and Section 27b) to support this priority. The House proposed budget does *not* include these items. Key Michigan budget decision makers are meeting now to negotiate the final budget.Thus, we are asking all school library supporters to take action NOW to urge decision makers to include these essential school library budget items in the final School Aid Budget. Hello! Are you a Michigan library director, board member, or friends group member? Have you ever faced questions involving the law and how it relates to Michigan libraries? Questions like: If a Friends group member volunteered to dress in an inflatable T-Rex costume and hand out goodies to participants during the library's Summer Reading Kickoff, and during the outdoor event, it starts to rain, and before the event can be moved inside, the volunteer T-Rex comes in contact with a metal tent pole at exactly the same time lightning strikes the tent, and the volunteer is rendered unconscious for a few moments, but emerges unscathed from the experience, is the incident covered by workers compensation, or would the fact that the incident was the result of an "act of God" exempt the imposition of workers compensation? Would the volunteer be eligible for Workers Compensation? Could the library claim the cost of the tent and the interrupted event under their insurance, or is that also precluded under an "act of God" exemption? Executive Director - Baltimore County Public Library (MD) The Baltimore County Public Library Board of Library Trustees seeks a strategic, collaborative, and community-centered leader to serve as the next Executive Director. Serving more than 830,000 residents through 19 branches, four bookmobiles, and a virtual branch, BCPL is one of Maryland's major public library systems and a vital civic, educational, and cultural resource for communities throughout Baltimore County. Guided by its mission to provide opportunities to explore, learn, create, and connect, BCPL offers welcoming public spaces, strong collections, mobile and digital services, technology access, lifelong learning opportunities, and partnerships that strengthen community life. Reporting to the Board of Library Trustees, the Executive Director provides systemwide leadership for BCPL's strategy, operations, finances, staff, partnerships, and public service priorities. Minimum requirements include a master's degree in library science from an accredited-ALA program; at least five years of experience as a professional librarian, including at least two years of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity; and the ability to obtain and maintain licensure as a Professional Public Library Director in the State of Maryland. Residency within the Baltimore County Public Library service area is required within six months of hiring date. Preferred qualifications include experience leading a multi-branch public library system or comparably complex public service organization; experience working with a governing board; experience developing, managing, presenting, or advocating for operating and/or capital budgets; experience working with elected officials, county or municipal government, community partners, donors, foundations, or other external stakeholders; experience in a unionized environment; and a record of advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, intellectual freedom, and community-responsive service. Hello Adult Services Librarians! Last night I hosted a *Self-Defense & Situational Awareness* program for adult women and teen girls at the Clarkston Independence District Library. We had 23 attend and from all accounts it was a huge success! I can highly recommend the instructors, 7th degree black belt, Sensei Cliff Laskosky and his colleague, 2nd degree black belt, Amy Pollack from the Okinawa Budo Kai School of Karate & Kobudo in Livonia, MI. Sensei Cliff and Amy make a great team and have a sincere rapport with the participants. They are available for programs in Southeast Michigan.
