FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: KALAMAZOO PUBLIC LIBRARY'S RAYMOND J. FOX LAW LIBRARY WINS THE LIBERTY BELL AWARD
by Farrell Howe 11 May '18

11 May '18

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 11, 2018 CONTACT Farrell Howe Marketing and Communication Manager Kalamazoo Public Library 269-553-7879 Kalamazoo Public Library's Raymond J. Fox Law Library Wins The Liberty Bell Award Kalamazoo, MI – Friday, May 11, 2018. The Kalamazoo Public Library's Raymond J. Fox Law Library<http://www.kpl.gov/law-library/> was awarded the Kalamazoo Bar Association's (KCBA) Liberty Bell Award <https://kanecountybar.org/liberty-bell-award> at the association's annual Law Day gathering on May 3, 2018. The Liberty Bell Award is bestowed upon a KCBA member who has made a significant contribution to the community outside the legal profession, without financial gain. KPL's housing of the County Law Library is a model for great intergovernmental and private cooperation. In the late 1990's, during the renovation of the Kalamazoo Public Library's Central location, Kalamazoo County funded the conversion of former storage space within the lower level of the public library to house the County Law Library. This move<http://www.kpl.gov/local-history/library/history.aspx> provided lawyers, law students and the general public convenient access to legal materials outside of normal business hours. Kalamazoo County continues to assist KPL with legal resource costs while a strong partnership with the Kalamazoo County Bar Association to schedule and host free legal clinics allows the Law Library to continue its mission of directing patrons seeking legal information to reputable and relevant resources. The need for legal assistance in our community is great. According to a 2017 report from the Legal Services Corporation, nearly 17% of Kalamazoo County residents are living poverty, 33% in the City of Kalamazoo. Over the course of a year, 71% of low-income households experience at least one civil legal problem. The Raymond J. Fox Law Library at KPL is there to provide critical access to unrepresented individuals seeking legal help in our community. The success of KPL's Raymond J. Fox Law Library would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the staff. Congratulations to Caitlin Hoag, Amy Alcenius-Hoisington, Matt Smith, Zack Hunkins, Christine Hann, and Ryan Gage for a job well done.

Generator Responses
by Kate Van Auken 11 May '18

Responses to “Who has a generator for their facility?” Attached are the responses I received about libraries having backup generators. I appreciate all the insight from this group! I received many responses and it is interesting to see how many are considering the same thing. The next step is deciding on procedures and policies to follow if we install one. Do we just use it during regular library hours when the power is out or do we remain open 24 hours? This brings up staffing and perhaps safety issues. Thoughts??? What I have learned researching this topic: TALK TO AN ELECTRICIAN! I am so fortunate that our electrician came right out and looked at our situation. 1) Power generators are rated according to the number of kilowatts (kW) of electricity they produce. 15 kW can run a small to mid-size home, 25kW and up is like a mini power plant and can run a small to mid-sized home or business. *Note that the total running and starting watts of all the appliance being used at one time should not exceed the power source’s wattage. A/C units draw a lot of power. 2) The units can run on natural gas, propane, or diesel fuel. 3) There are single phase and three phase models which one you can run depends on your electrical system. 4) They come with 5 different decibel levels: Industrial Quiet, Residential Quiet, Super Quiet, Ultra Quiet, and Entertainment Industry Quiet. 5) Depending upon size, you may need a cement pad installed too. 6) They should come with a warranty and make sure to ask about a maintenance plan. 7) Consider grants if you want to pursue this. Homeland Security is not an option (FYI) but county foundations and WalMart may be willing to assist as it is for the good of the community. Again, thank you for your input. I really appreciate it! CD classification
by Ahlers, Teresa 11 May '18

11 May '18

Who has a system for classifying CDs that they like and that patrons understand? We use a dumbed-down version of ANSCR. The patrons don't get it, things have been put in wrong categories over the years and we're exploring other options. CDs still circulate surprisingly well here, so we're not ready to get rid of them, but it would be nice to have a classification system that was a little easier for our users. If you have a system that works, what do you do? Thank you, Terrie Ahlers Adult Services Supervisor Grace A. Dow Memorial Library 989-837-3451 tahlers(a)midland-mi.org<mailto:tahlers@midland-mi.org>

magazines

Hello Everyone, Just an update that we quoted our periodicals list with Ebsco, MagMall, Popular Subscription Services, and WT Cox. MagMall saved over $600 on a portion of the list, they couldn't quote 100% of the list. I then went back to Ebsco (our current vendor) and they beat it. Saved $800 total. It's worth the effort.
