Michigan Statewide Survey of Digital Preservation Programs - REMINDER
by Heather Ladiski 19 Sep '18

19 Sep '18

Please excuse any cross-posting. ***************************************************** This is just a reminder to institutions residing in the state of Michigan who classify themselves as a library, archive, museum, gallery, historical society, research center, or other similar organization. There is still time to fill out this important survey on digital preservation. Attached also is a PDF of the full survey if it helps to coordinate responses from multiple people in your organization who may be working on your digital preservation efforts. Read on below. Thank you! Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Libraries in coordination with the Library of Michigan, the Michigan Council of Library Directors (COLD), the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS), Michigan Academic Library Association (MiALA), archives (Michigan Archival Association), and museums (Michigan Museums Association) is distributing this electronic survey to our statewide cultural heritage institutions. If your institution resides in the state of Michigan and is self-classified as a library, archive, museum, gallery, historical society, research center, or other similar organization, we would like your help. The survey is designed to gather information about the status of your digital preservation program and to determine readiness and interest for engaging broader collaborations across the state and within the surrounding region to further your institution's digital preservation efforts. This is exploratory work. You may not directly benefit from this research; however, we hope that your participation in the study will improve our state's capacity to respond to the preservation needs for ensuring ongoing access to our shared digital heritage. GVSU Libraries will make a report on the survey findings publicly available in early 2019, and with the help of our coordinating partners, use the findings to guide further exploratory work at the state level. You will be asked to read completely and agree to our consent form before beginning the survey. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary and you can withdraw at any time. The survey can be filled out by multiple people at your institution, but it is strongly encouraged that staff with the most knowledge of the institution's digital programs take the lead with completing the survey whenever possible. The survey does not need to be completed all at once. The link to the survey is here https://gvsu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b87Hxg5Sq10vyMB. The survey will be open until October 1st, 2018. If you have questions about the survey you can contact Matt Schultz (Digital Curation Librarian, GVSU Libraries) at schultzm(a)gvsu.edu<mailto:schultzm@gvsu.edu>. If you have any questions concerning your rights as a research subject, you may contact the Grand Valley State University Office of Research Compliance & Integrity at (616)331-3197 (rci(a)gvsu.edu<mailto:rci@gvsu.edu>). ******************************** Heather M. Disc repair machines
by Bill Wines 19 Sep '18

19 Sep '18

We have been looking at optical disc cleaning and repair machines. We have a single-disc unit and are interested in something that would process several discs at one time, but it's been difficult to find anything out there other than the high-end systems that clean 50+ discs and are way beyond our means. Does anyone know of or can anyone recommend something intermediate? -- Bill Wines Circulation & Technical Services Manager Commerce Township Community Library 180 E. Commerce Rd. Looking for used security gate
by Ben M Boss 19 Sep '18

19 Sep '18

We are shopping for a new security gate to use for our tattle tape system here at the KCAD Library. As many libraries are moving away from tattle tape to RFID I thought it would be worthwhile to check with the list to see if anyone has an old electromagnetic security gate that is not in use and you'd be willing to sell. If so, please contact me off list. Cash Register Software? compilation
by Don Priest 18 Sep '18

18 Sep '18

I heard from a few libraries, answers are below. Hi Don, We use Square for credit/debit cards. Other than that, we write it down on a paper and total the drawer every night. I would love to know about something that we could use on a computer to keep track of the money we receive. A cash register seemed like overkill for our library as we average less than $10 a day. But if we could keep track on a computer and print a page at the end of the day, it would be great. I hope that you get some great ideas! Hi Don We are woefully behind the times! We use an actual cash register, Sam3s ER-285m. It has 15 departments, so we can easily see how much was collected in fines, copies, faxes, etc. We've had it for over 10 years. We have an actual cash register + a POS for credit card. The POS reports on the credit card, and for the cash register entries I use an Excel file. It’s simple, easy, and will never stop working because of compatibility issues. Guess I'll be getting a cash register! Thanks for the replies!
