Computer guest pass responses
by Jillian Baker 13 Sep '18

13 Sep '18

Hello, Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about computer guest passes! For those who are interested, below is the compilation of responses I received. After reviewing the responses and discussing it, we've decided to stop asking patrons for ID in order to get a guest pass at FCL. 16 libraries - No ID required to get a guest pass and they don't ask for the person's name 7 libraries - Ask to see ID, but do not record the person's name 2 libraries - Ask to see ID and record the person's name 1 library - Records the person's name, address and phone number and keeps it on file Best, Jillian Baker Head of Adult Services, Main Library Farmington Community Library Jillian.Baker(a)FarmLib.org 248-848-4312

MeL Minute: MeL's New Look
by Breed, Liz (MDE) 13 Sep '18

13 Sep '18

Greetings Library Community, [cid:image002.png@01D44B5D.74C1D9D0]We are very excited to announce MeL will have a completely new look this fall: new logo, new color scheme, new website. Our new logo will replace the purple and green version we've had for 12 years and you will see this update everywhere that MeL can be found including online, in black and white on MeLCat materials, and on promotional giveaways. The redesign of the MeL logo was an intentional process with 3 goals: * Update to a more contemporary look and feel * Strengthen the visual aspects of the MeL brand * Create logo specifications and usage guidelines to establish consistency MeL's new colors are blue, green, and burgundy and they each represent something different. Blue is the base color of the site and ties into the blue used in the Library of Michigan branding, green represents Library Staff, and burgundy represents Educators. The "e" and the "L" are positioned to form a subtle book. There will be versions of this logo in black and white as well as in singular colors, including green and burgundy for use with our two key audiences. For the entire life of MeL, our emphasis has been to market broadly to the library community and all 9+ million residents in the State of Michigan. While MeL is for use by any Michigan resident, our core purpose is to support Michigan libraries. To that end, we are shifting our focus away from messaging to residents and concentrating on tools, resources, and support specifically for the library and education communities. The changes you see with the MeL logo and website are helping us visually tailor our educational and marketing materials so they are distinct and easy to recognize, while ensuring that everything fits with the larger family of MeL offerings. To help you prep for the upcoming MeL changes, we have uploaded logo files to the Get Ready<http://mel.org/index.php?P=P_GetReady_Display> page at MeL.org<http://mel.org/>. Additional information about MeL eResource changes, including training opportunities, can also be found at our Get Ready<http://mel.org/index.php?P=P_GetReady_Display> page. Brought to you by Liz Breed from the MeL Team. MeL databases are available to Michigan residents or for Michigan library access only. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for the next MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org>, visit http://mel.org<http://mel.org/>, or sign up for the MeL Minute and other Library of Michigan e-mail lists via GovDelivery<https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/subscriber/new>. Re: [Michlib-l] SRP18 Survey
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 13 Sep '18

13 Sep '18

Last chance to complete our SRP survey to help paint the picture for 2018's successes. Please see details below. Also included, CSLP has a survey looking towards the future of summer reading, and as members they're asking you to complete that as well. Thanks, Cathy Please take a few minutes to complete the SRP annual survey for the Library of Michigan, no matter your theme or participation in CSLP; it provides us with valuable feedback: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MI18SRP<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.survey…> Adult program, Teens & Children's stats are all covered in this 1 survey, but you do not need to complete all 3 age groups, just the one(s) you coordinate. Be sure to discuss with your co-workers who is completing what section and feel free to forward to other departments (children's/teens/adults) for them to complete their portion. If you're submitting a district-wide report (in lieu of branch-by-branch), please note that in the "Name of branch" box. Please submit your responses by Friday, September 7, 2018, to be eligible for a prize drawing. Additional survey from CSLP (all public libraries in Michigan are members): The audience for this survey is public library staff. This survey is being conducted by the Statistics Committee of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). Our goal is to better understand how public library staff use and value CSLP membership and materials. For the purposes of this survey, we use the phrase "summer library program" in equivalence to summer reading program or summer learning program. This survey does not concern materials and promotions provided by CSLP partner organizations, such as Demco/Upstart. The survey is open now through October 31, 2018. All public libraries in Michigan are members of the Collaborative Summer Library Program, thanks to funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Value of CSLP Membership and Materials survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/cslp_value<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.survey…> This project is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. FW: Featured Events at PIDL Owned Rogers City Theater
by Anne Belanger-Presque Isle District Library 12 Sep '18

12 Sep '18

From: Anne Belanger-Presque Isle District Library <annebelanger(a)pidl.org> Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2018 4:52 PM To: 'michlib-1(a)mcls.org' <michlib-1(a)mcls.org> Cc: Amber Alexander - PIDL <director(a)pidl.org> Subject: Featured Events at PIDL Owned Rogers City Theater Since the Presque Isle District Library took ownership of the historic Rogers City Theater in 2016, we have been very active in showcasing a diversity of talent and special featured events putting northeast Michigan on the map with arts and cultural events. Coming up, The MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival will be screened at the Rogers City Theater on Friday, September 28 through Sunday, September 30th starting at 7:30 pm each night. Audience members will be able to cast their vote for Best Picture and Best Actor/Actress. Nine outstanding short films were chosen as finalists. Filmgoers in Rogers City will unite with audiences in over 300 cities spanning six continents to view and judge the work of the next generation of filmmakers from around the world. The nine MANHATTAN SHORT film finalists are from eight countries with films from Austria, Canada, Germany, Hungary, Kosovo, New Zealand, USA and the United Kingdom. All nine films are eligible for an Academy Award nomination, an Oscar-contender. A complete list of screenings can be found at www.pidl.org <http://www.pidl.org> . The following week, the library hosts the first TEDx PresqueIsleDistrictLIbrary event at the Rogers City Theater on Friday, October 5th at 7:30 pm featuring LIVE speakers, John Dempsey and John O'Shea. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxPresqueIsleDistrictLibrary, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDx PresqueIsleDistrictLIbrary event, TED Talk videos and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. John Dempsey, an internationally acclaimed artist who is featured in the Norman Rockwell Museum touring exhibit, "Re-imagining the Four Freedoms" will address the perspective of an "artist communicating the meaning behind his work". John's art work was selected for inclusion in this major traveling exhibition organized by Norman Rockwell Museum. His work, "Sunday Night/Monday Morning" is on a national tour as part of the Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms. John will talk about what the four freedoms mean to him and the meaning behind his work. Freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear; as those were President Roosevelt's four freedoms. John is a resident of Presque Isle County and is an acclaimed artist whose work is exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. John O'Shea, Curator of Great Lakes Archaeology at University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology whose focus is on prehistoric cultures and 19th century shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. John will present a new historical perspective of Paleo Indians from 9,900 years ago using new research and technology advancements. John was the key person who upon examining new underwater topographical maps of Lake Huron discovered a continuous underwater ridge stretching 112 miles from northeastern Michigan to southern Ontario known as the Amberley Ridge. He realized that around the last Ice Age, 9,900 years ago it was a land bridge known as the Alpena-Amberley Ridge. He is working with a team using technology upgrades that have yielded Ice Age landscapes of campsites from Paleo Indians, stone circles, remnants of a fire hearth and much more. For over a decade, O'Shea's team discovered archaeological sites intact all through the Amberley Ridge. His three-person submersible was used in summer 2018 to investigate the bottom of a 500 foot deep cliff that has never been explored. This Ice Age landscape once sustained caribou and its hunters for two millennia. It disappeared under the waves of Lake Huron some 8,000 years ago. Then on Saturday, October 6th at 7:30 pm, the talents of the internationally acclaimed musical artist, Sofia Talvik will perform live at the Rogers City Theater. Unmistakably Nordic in flavor, Sofia Talvik somehow still conforms to American interpretations of her own original music, a North Sea siren blending sparkle and melancholy. A veteran performer with 6 full length albums as well as numerous EPs, singles and tours behind her. Complete bios and detailed information about all of the above events can be found on the library's website at <http://www.pidl.org> www.pidl.org Tickets can be purchased at the Rogers City Theater box office. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
