ALA and its chapters are active in the relief efforts following Hurricane Florence, offering a coordination point for others who would like to help. This edition also features a number of awards and grant opportunities - and the I Love My Librarian Award nomination period ends 10/1. See below for the news and full details... ALA News for September 18, 2018 NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ALA, library community work to support Hurricane Florence recovery efforts American Library Association (ALA) and its chapters in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are working to assist libraries affected by Hurricane Florence. Support efforts will involve most Atlantic Seaboard libraries in serving as a lifeline for residents in dire need of FEMA and insurance forms, access to electrical power, internet access, heat or important information about storm relief and recovery efforts. “Our hearts and prayers go to the more than 10 million citizens working to recover from this historic and devastating storm,” said ALA President Loida Garcia-Febo. “The ALA and library community have a long history of helping those in need and will work to support our chapters during this crisis. We have contacted our affiliates in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and other impacted states to explore how we can support relief efforts. “As we continue to assess damage to local libraries, we ask ALA members to visit chapter websites for information regarding donations and volunteer opportunities.” http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2018/09/ala-library-community-work-s… Banned Books Week 2018 focuses on author and reader activism Speaking out for banned and challenged books is vital in the fight against censorship. Each winner will receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and a travel stipend to attend the I Love My Librarian Award ceremony and reception in New York City on Dec. 4 hosted by the award co-sponsor, the philanthropic foundation Carnegie Corporation of New York. http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2018/09/nominations-i-love-my-librar… AASL Standards now crosswalked to ISTE Standards and Future Ready Framework As part of its continued commitment to provide school library professionals the materials and resources needed to implement its new “National School Library Standards,” the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has released crosswalks aligning the AASL Standards to the ISTE Standards for Learners and Educators and the Future Ready Framework. These downloadable and printable PDFs are available on the AASL Standards Portal and are a precursor to a searchable, web-based crosswalk to launch in 2019. “I'm so excited to share that the AASL Standards Crosswalks are now available,” said AASL President Kathryn Roots Lewis. “These crosswalks reflect the depth and breadth of the new ‘National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries’ and allow school librarians to enter the conversation about their work as a learner-ready school librarian with stakeholders. RESULTS Does your library have locking DVD and Blu-Ray cases?
by Rosemary Retford 20 Sep '18

20 Sep '18

Thank you for the great feedback regarding my - to lock or not to lock the DVD cases – question. The results are in! 23 libraries responded. 8 of them lock their DVD cases. Most responding libraries are using One-Time locking cases. 15 libraries do not have locking DVD cases. Of those 15 libraries, 8 of them store some or all of their collection in a different location to be retrieved upon check out. The biggest factor in deciding to purchase locking cases is the cost. For libraries that only have a few DVDs go missing each year it is not worth the cost to switch the cases. For other libraries it was a good investment to maintain the collection. The most surprising find was that at least five libraries have recently stopped using locking cases and/or put the discs back in their unlocked cases to sit on the shelf. The reasons varied including space issues, locking mechanism issues, and also the time and effort it takes to switch cases and retrieve discs. You’ve given me a lot to think about, thanks again!
