*POSITION OPENING* Public Services Clerk Coldwater Branch, Branch District Library *WORK SCHEDULE* Part-time, 21 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends. Must have a flexible schedule. *PAY RATE* $11.24 to $14.37 per hour *JOB SUMMARY* Public Services Clerks have a broad range of duties and responsibilities. Their primary responsibility is to provide required service to the public at the Public Services Desk; clerk will be based at the Coldwater Branch but will be available to work in a different branch. In addition, after a suitable training period has been completed, each clerk may be assigned one or more specific specialized jobs for which the employee will be responsible. This clerk will work under the supervision of the Branch Manager. *REQUIREMENTS* High School Diploma. Commitment to customer service excellence. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be comfortable with computer technology and have an understanding of its potential in providing high quality library services. Ability to organize multiple assignments and work independently. Additionally, to perform the essential functions of the position, an individual may be required to maintain a physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, and/or standing for long periods of time; lifting or carrying light to moderately heavy objects; operating assigned equipment, including computers. *PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS* Some college is preferred. Experience working with children, teens, and adults. Experience working in a public library setting. Window/Door Sign and Flyer Holders?

Hail the Great Brain! We're struggling with our current system of signage display on our front door and windows. We currently use acrylic holders with suction cups (shown in the photo), but they are problematic. They let loose, especially in cold weather, fall, break and chip, and our patrons are somehow removing the screws that hold on the cups! We know this because the cups are missing, but we find the screws sitting nicely on the window ledge next to the door. What do you use display program flyers in your windows or on your doors? "South of Superior" Author Ellen Airgood to Visit Battle Creek

"South of Superior," by Ellen Airgood, is the 2018 Battle Creek Reads selection sponsored by Willard Library . Airgood will discuss her book, her writing process, and life in the Upper Peninsula at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the Kool Family Community Center, 200 W . Michigan Ave. in Battle Creek. "South of Superior" was Airgood’s debut novel and was named a Michigan Notable Book in 2012. The novel tells the story of Madeline Stone who leaves her Chicago life to live in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. As she is drawn into the dramas of the small, tight-knit town, Madeline learns that it’s a place where times are tough and debts run deep, but where friendship, community, and compassion run deeper. Green Grove Press

Hi All, I received a package with 4 hardcover copies of the book "Horoscopes: Reality or Trickery?" from Green Grove Press today, supposedly donated to the library in the names of two people we have never heard of. The website indicates this is likely vanity publishing, but I am wondering if this is one of those scams where they send you books and then invoice you later (the director said this has happened before from other "publishers.") Does anybody know anything about this woman, Kimberly Blaker, or have any experience with receiving unsolicited materials from Green Grove Press? Any help would be much appreciated. "Students and their families will learn how to use Dual Enrollment and Early/Middle College programs to earn college credits before leaving high school," said State Superintendent Brian Whiston. "Providing multiple pathways to learning is the linchpin to helping Michigan become a Top 10 education state in 10 years. We need to promote and nurture these strategies." Staff will meet with teachers, counselors, and administrators to discuss student options as they transition to college and careers, and then host free evening sessions for students and parents interested in reducing college tuition and expenses through early college credits. Early/Middle College programs allow students to earn a high school diploma and substantial college credit through a fifth year of study. Programs can begin as early as the ninth grade, and are located within a school, intermediate school district (ISD), or college campus. The model is most beneficial for economically-disadvantaged and first-generation college students, as well as those students who are underserved, underachieving, or underrepresented. Dual enrollment allows eligible students, starting in ninth grade, to enroll in up to 10 postsecondary courses throughout their high school careers. Dual enrollment courses may be taken on college campuses, online, or through a concurrent enrollment program established by a school district. Last year, Michigan paid more than $40 million in dual enrollment fees for about 28,000 students, who earned over 81,000 postsecondary credits. MDE staff also will share Work-Based Learning requirements for students and employers, as formal school-business partnerships can help students better prepare for meaningful careers and create a pipeline of future employees. "Future Ready with the Library" applications now open!

Future Ready with the Library Cohort 3 Application Future Ready with the Library project funding is provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Through this project, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) will support library staff as they work with a community partner to develop college and career readiness services. 35 participants will be selected for cohort 3.
