MCLS Product Advisory Librarians start second year

In early 2017, MCLS Group Purchasing issued a call for Product Advisory Librarians (PALs). At the time, we had a vague idea that you, our members, could help us do a better job of determining potential new vendors or products, and we could, in turn, provide you a secure place to discuss those products and vendors with us and with each other. With one year behind us, we want to share the results of our collaboration. In our first year: · Fifty-five librarians representing all library types across both Indiana and Michigan reviewed 11 products from eight vendors. · PALs submitted 39 survey responses after completing trials and evaluating products from BiblioBoards, Auto Finance Center, Demco, Niche Academy, Press Reader, Reprints Desk, SirsiDynix, and Statista. · We started a new group purchase with Statista, based on your feedback and interest. · We provided all the vendors with valuable information to help them better align their offerings and products with member needs. Some of you may have even decided on direct purchases, in instances where a group purchase wasn’t warranted. We also used what we learned from our members to create an Expression of Interest<https://www.mcls.org/files/7915/0608/1242/New_Business_Expression_of_Intere…> for new business prospects. This tool makes it easier for businesses who want to work with MCLS to understand what it means to work with a consortium — what our expectations are for our members in terms of value, service, and central licensing, as well as what we’ll provide in return as we work together to help our libraries maximize their budget dollars. As we begin our second year of this group, we want to say thank you to all the PALs of MCLS for your time throughout the year. Your feedback was essential in helping Group Purchasing improve how we advocate on your behalf. We are always looking for more feedback. MeL Minute: New Members on the MeLCat Advisory Committee

Greetings Michigan Library Community, The MeLCat Advisory Committee has new members and several of them have taken a moment to introduce themselves to you. Welcome new members! Jill Wioskowski, a graduate of Wayne State University, absolutely loves all things MeLCat and is beginning her 2nd term on the committee. She brings to the table small and rural library perspective and experience (class 1-3 libraries) as she has worked as a Director at Deckerville Public Library and Millington Arbela District Library. In April, she begins her new position as a Librarian at Dearborn Heights Public Library. Fun fact: Wioskowski has the cover of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury tattooed on her leg. Jill C. I love that because of MeLCat our patrons have access to materials that they otherwise wouldn't be able to get through the library system. What's even more gratifying to me, though, is to be able to give a bigger audience to the offbeat items we have that aren't widely held. I am the Circulation Coordinator at the Woodmere branch of the Traverse Area District Library (TADL). One of my duties is being the "MeLCat expert" for TADL. I joined the MeLCat Advisory Committee because I want to work with other libraries to help find ways to improve MeLCat for everyone. I hope to learn from those who have been on the committee for a while and to also bring a fresh perspective as a new member. This experience will allow me to better help TADL staff, and our patrons. Extended Call for chapter proposals Publication: Advances in Library Administration and Organization Topic: Scholarly Communication and Library Management Publication due: 2019 Series Editor: Samantha Hines, Peninsula College Volume Editor: Su Epstein, Saxton B. Little Free Library Libraries hold a valued and valuable role in scholarly communication. With the advent of online communications and increasing competition in both scholarly outlets and tenured roles on campuses, how scholars contribute to academic discourse has become increasingly complicated, and libraries have taken on more in this area. In the public sector, libraries are working more with nontraditional education venues and finding greater need for understanding and utilizing scholarly communications formerly reserved for academia. ALAO seeks submissions for the “Scholarly Communication and Library Management” volume that delve beyond examples and case studies to look at how libraries can deepen their role in scholarly communication and strengthen services and resources for scholars and peers. Proposals in the following areas would be of particular interest: * Improving understanding around research methods * The civility movement in public libraries and its counterpart in scholarly communication * The role of libraries in critically evaluating information resources * How libraries teach the basics of scholarly communication * How libraries can benefit and utilize scholarly communication * How public libraries can support online education users * The management of online academic discourse * Scholarly communication in the non-print world This will be the first volume of Advances in Library Administration and Organization (ALAO) to publish in 2019. About the Advances in Library Administration and Organization series ALAO<http://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/products/books/series.htm?id=0732-0671> offers long-form research, comprehensive discussions of theoretical developments, and in-depth accounts of evidence-based practice in library administration and organization. The series answers the questions, “How have libraries been managed, and how should they be managed?” It goes beyond a platform for the sharing of research to provide a venue for dialogue across issues, in a way that traditional peer reviewed journals cannot. Through this series, practitioners can glean new approaches in challenging times and collaborate on the exploration of scholarly solutions to professional quandaries.
