FWD: NASA GLOBE Observer app
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 27 Sep '18

27 Sep '18

NASA GLOBE Observer is a free smart phone app that lets you take citizen science data for NASA. Just this month the GLOBE Observer team launched the latest tool within the app called: "Land Cover Adopt a Pixel." This new feature lets you take part in a project to create more detailed satellite-based global maps of land cover by sharing photos of the world around you. Why does NASA need your help in collecting this data with the new GLOBE Observer Land Cover tool? One reason is to fill in details of the landscape that are too small for global land-mapping satellites to see. Land cover is critical to many different processes on Earth and contributes to a community's vulnerability to disasters like fire, floods or landslides. Learn more about how libraries can help at www.starnetlibraries.org/uncategorized/go-land-cover<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starnet…> Questions about the project? Pickford Community Library Honored as Number One Library in Nationwide Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge
by Ann Marie Smith 27 Sep '18

27 Sep '18

PICKFORD COMMUNITY LIBRARY RANKED NUMBER ONE LIBRARY IN U.S.A. 2018 SCHOLASTIC SUMMER READING CHALLENGE The Pickford Community Library has reason to celebrate! It's the Number One Library in the United States in the 2018 <http://www.scholastic.com/summer> Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. This is the second year Scholastic is recognizing the contributions of libraries and community partners along with schools in the challenge. The Pickford Community Library coordinated and administrated the challenge for Pickford Public Schools, area homeschoolers, and participants from other Eastern Upper Peninsula schools. 152 area students read 338,057 minutes from May 7 to September 7. In addition, the local community provided outstanding support for the library's "piggyback rewards program" in which students earned in-house prizes all summer long. The Pickford Community Library will be featured in 2019 Scholastic Book of World Records for this nationwide honor and will receive a commemorative plaque and a celebration kit to recognize student reading achievements. This past summer, 509,867 students from all 50 states, two U.S. territories, and Washington, D.C., read 135,865,170 million minutes in the 2018 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, a free, online summer reading program which aims to help students return to school reading-ready. It's designed to help kids turn the "summer slide"-the learning loss which can occur over the summer months-into a "summer leap" by discovering the power and joy of reading for fun. The complete list of Top Libraries, Top Community Partners, and "Best in State" schools is available at <http://www.scholastic.com/summer> www.scholastic.com/summer. For more information, contact Ann Marie Smith, Pickford Community Library Manager, at 906-647-1288 or <mailto:amsmith@uproc.lib.mi.us> amsmith(a)uproc.lib.mi.us.

Book series reading level 1 -3 grade
by BillieJo Bluemer 26 Sep '18

26 Sep '18

Hello, I'm asking for suggestions on beginning chapter books specifically geared for reading level 1st - 3rd grade. I need to update and add to our collections and with recent requests from parents/children, I need to focus on the 1st-3 grade reading level. I do have books in that interest range but have discovered quite a few tend to be a high 3 or in the 4 for accelerated reading level. I need to focus on more of the 2nd grade level and they have to be chapter books. When you are in a school district where students cannot read a book below their tested reading level (in some cases cannot read above it either) and are required to achieve a certain amount of points each marking period or their grade is lowered, I do at some times have to pay attention to the AR level. I had my first student in yesterday who left upset because a book he really wanted to read does not have an AR test so he said "I can't read it"; I really dislike Accelerated Reading! It's to the point where a book will go untouched if it's not an AR book or at the right reading level; we will hear non-stop until June "I can't read that book" by numerous students. Would you share what new series are popular with your 1st - 3rd graders? I would really like reviews from actual readers before selecting new series to purchase. MeL GeoIP URLs
by Breed, Liz (MDE) 26 Sep '18

26 Sep '18

Greetings! The MeL geo-IP authentication URLs are ready. Visit our Get Ready page<http://mel.org/index.php?P=P_GetReady_Display> or check out this link<http://michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/lm_2018_MeL_GeoIP_URLs_Sept…>. You will be prompted to download the file, which is a Microsoft Word document. These URLs will be in place on MeL.org starting October 1st. There are two URLs that are still in-process...AtoZDatabases and MyHeritage. When these URLs are ready we will update the file and send notice out via the listservs. The geo-IP URLs check to see if a user is coming from a registered institution (based on IP address), then they check to see if the user is in Michigan to allow access to the resource. If you are looking for the list of direct URLs, which only work from a registered IP address (within the library/institution), visit https://mcls.org/directurls<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmcls.org%2…>. Any questions or problems, please contact meldatabaseshelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:meldatabaseshelp@mcls.org>. Many thanks!
