Has your library eliminated late fees, or is it considering going fine-free? United for Libraries would like to hear from Friends, Trustees, and Foundations on how going fine-free or considering eliminating fines has affected their groups and libraries. This information will be passed along to the ALA Working Committee on Eliminating Monetary Library Fines as a Form of Social Justice. This group was formed as a result of the passage of a Resolution on Monetary Library Fines as a Form of Social Inequity at ALA Midwinter 2019. The committee is creating a toolkit for libraries of all types with information resources, strategies, and tips for libraries wishing to eliminate fines. Night for Notables will be taking place at the Library of Michigan on Saturday, April 27. Come be part of the celebration. Josh Malerman the author of the 2015 Michigan Notable Book Brid Box will be the featured keynote speaker. The recent Netflix movie based on Bird Box has created an increased buzz surrounding Malerman's and his books. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase books, have them signed by the author and rub shoulders/chat with 16 of this year's MNB authors. Applications are due May 1, 2019. Given annually since 2000, the Baker & Taylor Awards have recognized more than 50 groups for outstanding efforts to support their library. Two winning groups will each receive $1,000. The awards will be given based on a specific project that took place or culminated during the 2018 calendar year. Applications are judged on planning, implementation, evaluation, innovation and community involvement. Participation is voluntary, but the information gathered will give the Michigan applicant perspective to this year's survey. Information and a survey link can be found below.
