Author event at the Otsego County Library

We are excited to be hosting Lori Rader-Day, author of Under the Dark Sky, a mystery set in the International Dark Sky Park in Emmet County, Michigan. The event takes place on Wednesday, April 10 at 6:30 pm. The book was recently nominated for the prestigious Edgar award. This event is made possible by an award through the Michigan Center for the Book, the Michigan affiliate of the National Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. Their mission is to promote an awareness of books, reading, literacy, authors and Michigan's rich literary heritage. Rader-Day grew up frequenting local libraries, reading all the Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, and Lois Duncan she could get her hands on. She studied journalism at Ball State University, but eventually gave in to her dream and turned to creative writing. Now a resident of Chicago, she is active in the area's crime writing community. She is also the current national vice-president of Sisters in Crime, a crime writers' organization, becoming national president in October 2019. We'd love to have you join us! The Hesperia Community Library serves 4 townships in rural Oceana and Newaygo Counties, 30 miles northeast of Muskegon and approximately 50 miles northwest of Grand Rapids. The library is a pristine 11,900 square foot building that is the crown jewel of this welcoming and picturesque community. This is a 30 hour per week position. Hesperia Community Library is a Class II library and a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative. Salary range is $33,000-$38,000 with no benefits. Summary of responsibilities: The Library Director is responsible for all library operations: creating, establishing and implementing plans, programs, and policies adopted by the Board of Trustees in the areas of financial management, program and collection development, staff development and supervision, and facility maintenance and community outreach. Summary of qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 4 years work experience in a public library with at least 2 years of management experience. A required certificate for a Michigan Class II library. A Master’s Degree in Library Sciences from an AAL accredited institution or another advanced degree is preferred but not required. Essential responsibilities and qualifications: * A willingness to understand, support and meet the needs and interests of the community. * Ability to plan, analyze, evaluate, supervise, and direct library needs and services. Ability to exercise independent judgment and make decisions. * Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the library board and staff, the general public, community and business leaders and school administrators and faculty. * Extensive knowledge of library budgeting, district library law and library practices and policies. * Strong communication skills in promoting library services and the value of the library including the use of social media and grant opportunities. * Ability to understand and utilize established and new technology including software, hardware and library and business applications and tools. * Experience in materials selection and collection management and thorough knowledge of print, electronic, audiovisual and information technologies and resources. * Required certification for Class II library. Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution, preferred but not required. * Knowledge of Lakeland Library Cooperative, Library of Michigan and Michigan Library Association. * Willingness to attend workshops and take advantage of professional development opportunities. * Must be bondable. MeL Early Reader Product Trials and Demonstration Webinars

As you may have seen in the Library of Michigan's March Dispatch Newsletter, Randy Riley wrote about the RFP process<https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/bulletins/234136c#link_1> we're engaged in to support the development of literacy for early readers. Specifically, we're interested in adding full-text/full book content for early readers. The technical scoring phase of the process has been completed for the 6 proposals we received and there were 3 eResource vendors (Gale, EBSCO, and Coughlin Capstone ) that passed technical scoring. We are now ready for phase 2 which is to test drive these eResources and share feedback. There are two parts to this process. 1. Attend product demonstration webinars from each of the three vendors. 2. Participate in product trials with the products each vendor is offering. You will find dates/times/links for the webinars as well as login info for the trials. One of these activities is Online Book Selling This practice can be a very lucrative one since certain categories of books (such as certain textbooks, technical manuals, antique volumes, and more) can sometimes fetch a larger price online than in a typical book sale. If your Friends group is considering launching online book sales, or is already selling books online but are curious about how other Friends Groups conduct online sales, United for Libraries has information for you! DPL's 2019 African American Booklist

For more than 50 years, the Detroit Public Library has annually produced a bibliography of the selected best reads by and/or about African Americans. Works of fiction and nonfiction for adults, children and young adults are reviewed and recommended by our librarians. Our 2019 African American Booklist is entitled, "Inventing Lives: Black Women Writing Our Story." The booklist includes an insightful historical essay by Dr. Mary Helen Washington, Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park.
