Hartland's Cromaine Library invites you to participate in their Great Michigan Read Programming
by Stefanie Furge 21 Sep '19

21 Sep '19

Cromaine District Library Partners with Michigan Humanities for 2019-20 Great Michigan Read (Hartland) — Cromaine District Library invites residents to join in reading What the Eyes Don’t See, Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha’s riveting account of her discovery that Flint’s children were being poisoned by lead leaching into the city’s drinking water. The book is Michigan Humanities’ choice for the 2019-20 Great Michigan Read, which aims to connect Michigan residents by deepening readers’ understanding of our state, our society, and our humanity. Hanna-Attisha said, “From the resistance of the Flint sit-down strikers to the reign of demagogue Charles Coughlin, Michigan’s DNA is full of history – some for good and some bad and some shared and some hidden – which we must understand in order to address our present-day challenges. Like so many Michiganders, my story is an immigrant story. It was critical to share this part of the story in this memoir because it informs how I see the world and the work that I am privileged to do.” Library Director Ceci Marlow said, “I could not put this book down. Not because it was about the Flint Water Crisis which we, in this area especially, understood so well. It was Hanna-Attisha’s sharing of her family history and how that led her to become more than a pediatrician. She became an advocate for her patients, the city, and for a nation that has since taken a much closer look at water supplies everywhere, particularly where our children are cared for every day.’ Events at Cromaine Library include: Unsettled Lives Exhibit – Monday, September 23 through Sunday, October 13. Unsettled Lives features photos of Iraqi refugees from the Dearborn area. The exhibit tackles the broad history of immigration over many generations, told largely through oral history quotes and photographs of refugees who came to Dearborn/Detroit in the 1990's. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha’s family stories enlighten our understanding of Iraqi immigration. Something in the Water: Screening and Discussion – Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 pm. Join us for a screening of the film Something in the Water - The Flint Water Crisis <https://cromaine.kanopy.com/video/something-water> followed by a discussion about how this happened. Correspondent Rosario Dawson, actress, writer, producer and political activist, investigates how a government could poison its own citizens, what hidden forces may have been at work, and how specific policies unique to Michigan, led not only to the crisis in Flint but also damaged poor communities around the state. Wandering Books – Monday, September 30 through Friday, October 4. Hartland's Cromaine Library in partnership with Michigan Humanities placed "wandering" copies of the Great Michigan Read 2019 book, "What the Eyes Don't See" by Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, in public places around the community. Look for clues to their location via Cromaine's Twitter and Facebook. Will you be the next to find one? If you find a copy please share your success! Log on to Bookcrossing.com then “release” the book back into the world for the next reader to find and enjoy. Drop-in. Children in Flint: Long-term Impact of the Water Crisis – Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00 pm. Research shows that the adversity we experience as children can affect us into adulthood. Challenges children face in school, life - and ultimately with their health - are often the symptoms of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and toxic stress. Join Carrie Shrier as she answers the question - What Impact do ACE's have to the Children in Flint? Could this happen here? Register for the film on September 24 and this discussion at WWW.CROMAINE.ORG or call 810-632-5200.

FW: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: KALAMAZOO PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES 2020 READING TOGETHER TITLE
by Farrell Howe 20 Sep '19

20 Sep '19

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 20, 2019 CONTACT: Farrell Howe | Marketing & Communications Manager Kalamazoo Public Library | CEN 315 S. Rose St. | Kalamazoo, MI, 49007 (269) 553-7879 Kalamazoo Public Library Announces 2020 Reading Together Title: We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins with Breakfast by Jonathan Safran Foer Kalamazoo, MI, Friday, September 20, 2019. Kalamazoo Public Library<http://www.kpl.gov/> is proud to announce the 2020 Reading Together title We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins with Breakfast<https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374280000> by Jonathan Safran Foer. Foer will speak about his book on Tuesday, March 10 at Chenery Auditorium<https://www.cheneryaud.com/>. In We Are the Weather, Jonathan Safran Foer explores the central global dilemma of our time in a surprising, deeply personal, and urgent new way. The task of saving the planet will involve a great reckoning with ourselves—with our all-too-human reluctance to sacrifice immediate comfort for the sake of the future. We have, he reveals, turned our planet into a farm for growing animal products, and the consequences are catastrophic. Only collective action will save our home and way of life. And it all starts with what we eat—and don’t eat—for breakfast. "Eye-opening . . . In this follow-up to his influential Eating Animals, [Foer] brings both personality and passion to an issue that no one has figured out how to address in a way that inspires an adequate response." —Mark Bittman, The New York Times Book Review "We Are the Weather is an earnest call to action in the face of climate change, but it’s not a polemic. Instead, it’s a personal exploration." —Ross Scarano, The Wall Street Journal Copies of We Are the Weather will be available soon for check out at every Kalamazoo Public Library location<https://www.kpl.gov/hours/>. In the spring, KPL will host a series events focused on a variety of climate change topics. Information about these events will be posted at readingtogether.us as the details are finalized. About Reading Together The purpose of Reading Together is to build a stronger community with deeper connections through the common experience of reading the same book and exploring its themes together. When we do that, we engage and learn, not only about ourselves, but more importantly about each other and the world around us. By experiencing the same book, hearing the author of that work speak right here in Kalamazoo, and examining the book’s themes through a local lens, we are able to embrace our similarities and differences from a common point of reference. Very simply, when we read together, we grow together. Media: please email farrellh(a)kpl.gov<mailto:farrellh@kpl.gov> for imagery, information or to schedule an interview with the Reading Together Coordinator, Karen Trout. ####
