Id appreciate anyone who can post these flyers. And, if you cant do it, I wont know it, unless I get one of my feelings. They should go side by side, if possible. While the original is 11x17, you can reduce them to 8 ½ x 11. Thanks, Bob Bob Barringer, PhD Director The Schultz-Holmes Memorial Library 407 S. Dungeons and Dragons and Libraries
by Patrick Cook 25 Sep '19

25 Sep '19

Hello there! I'm attempting to build a program for my library so that we have a consistent game of Dungeons and Dragons (5E, for those who care). I'm looking for anyone with information or experience in running library programs which play Dungeons and Dragons. I have a lot of questions about the logistics of playing and running a game, as well as unexpected pitfalls or experiences which may be helpful to know in advance. Some of my concerns and thoughts include: 1. What do you do when the volume of players becomes too high? As of right now, I'm the only librarian on staff who is working on the program, and I'm assuming I would play the role of Dungeon Master for the program. For those familiar, it's difficult to manage more than 5-6 players, so what do I do if the program is successful enough to gain more players? 2. What is your experience with running or attempting to run such programs? Should their be age brackets for potential players? What methods have you used to limit or mitigate the damage from more toxic players? What are the demographics of your groups? 3. Any ideas for integrating library resources to keep patrons coming around? Our branch has a 3d printer, for example, which could be used by patrons interested in making a model of their character. 4. How was your program received by the community? Did parents complain? Did it get new players? 5. On a less important note, how do you manage when players come/go unexpectedly? I can foresee a group being pretty fluid as people come and try the game for the first time and then decide they don't want to continue, or simply can't make it frequently. Any insights you could offer me would be really helpful. I'd also love to hear about ways of creative materials use, means of holding attention for various age brackets, etc. Thanks in advance! The KPL Youth Literature Seminar is designed for Pre-K and K–12 educators, daycare professionals, child and youth development administrators, students focusing on early-childhood education and/or literacy, parents and caregivers, and anyone with an interest in supporting and promoting childhood literacy. Scholarships are available for both adults and high school students interested in attending. For more information, please contact JillL(a)kpl.gov<mailto:JillL@kpl.gov>. About the Seminar Everyone knows that reading is important. Studies have shown that children who do not develop an early love for reading and cannot read at their grade level or above are far less likely to become successful adults. That is why libraries and schools across the country continue to dedicate so much time and resources to early-childhood literacy initiatives. In fact, beginning in the 2019–20 school year, Michigan third-graders who are not reading at grade level will be retained as part of the Read by Grade Three law signed by former Governor Rick Snyder in 2017. Since the passing of this law, Michigan teachers have been prioritizing literacy-focused instruction and coaching to prepare students to meet this requirement. While their efforts are commendable, it is not solely the responsibility of teachers to ensure our children are proficient in reading. The entire community must prioritize early childhood literacy and support children at every stage as they grow their reading skills. If we want our community story to reflect not just proficiency, but a true passion for reading, then we as a community must lead. But how? This year’s KPL Youth Literature Seminar is dedicated to providing community members with the tools and resources they need to write their own story—the story of a community that reads. For more information, visit kpl.gov/yls<http://www.kpl.gov/yls>. ####
