Library Law Spotlight - January: Library Law Resolutions
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 27 Jan '20

27 Jan '20

Greetings! As part of the Monthly Library Law Spotlight Webinar series, Wednesday January 29, 2020 @ 10:30am there will be a FREE Webinar discussing Library Law "Resolutions" for the new year. These "Resolutions" will encompass items that can be considered by Library Directors and Board members as they strategize and plan for the coming new calendar and fiscal years. This webinar would be of use to both Directors and Board Members. "Top New Years' Library Law Resolutions" According to History.com<https://www.history.com/news/the-history-of-new-years-resolutions>, New Years' resolutions date back to the Babylonians, who made promises during New Years' celebrations to pay back debts and return borrowed items so as to remain in good standing with the gods. As time progressed, these promises evolved to become resolves to improve health, prosperity, industry and other attributes through which we can feel better, become better and perhaps make our own worlds better. Libraries also can benefit from review and resolve. This webinar will present a selection of resolutions that libraries can adopt in order to organize, refresh and perhaps mitigate troubles before they start. Participants can expect to learn: * Tasks that can help libraries keep up with changes in law and policy. * Tasks that can help library staff with uncomfortable situations and conversations. * Tasks that can help Library Directors keep boards informed and aware of library processes and best practices The webinar is FREE, but registration is required. To register, please go to https://libraryofmichigan.z2systems.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/eventR… Can't make it, but interested? The webinar will be recorded and posted on the LM website for later viewing. Thanks! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D. 27 Jan '20

A Research Institute for Public Libraries, RIPL, is scheduled for the Chicago area July 12-15, 2020. Find out details below and when you can register. This workshop fills up very fast so if you are interested in attending in Chicago or South Carolina be sure you register quickly. All questions about the upcoming events should be directed to the Colorado State Library contact listed below. Shannon White Library of Michigan www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan<http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan> 517.335.1507 Whites29(a)michigan.gov<mailto:Whites29@michigan.gov> Hello, Registration for the next national Research Institute for Public Libraries (RIPL) event (July 12-15, 2020 in the Chicago suburbs) opens February 3, 2020 at 12:00 PM ET/9:00 AM PT at https://ripl.lrs.org/2020/ . We will debut a new curriculum and format at this event, tailored to meeting the needs of those just getting started with data and evaluation as well as data geeks, and for people new to RIPL as well as RIPL alumni. Longer breakout sessions will enable participants to explore topics in more depth. What’s not changing? Hands-on, experiential learning; an immersive, camp-like experience (with better accommodations!); and the opportunity to connect with instructors and library staff from around the US and beyond who are passionate about creating data-powered libraries. You can find more information about the event at https://ripl.lrs.org/2020/ . Don’t want to wait until summer 2020 to attend a RIPL event? We have a regional event this spring in Columbia, South Carolina (March 31-April 1, 2020). Regional events are scaled-down versions of the national events (2 days, 2-4 instructors, and up to 75 participants), that provide the training necessary to begin using data and evaluation for managing, planning, and communicating impact. Registration is now open via the event webpage: https://ripl.lrs.org/sc2020/ . Thank you, The RIPL Team This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
