Free Clear Shipping Label Envelopes/Protectors
by Brenna Wade 24 Jan '20

24 Jan '20

We have almost a full box (just under 500) of 10 ¾" x 6 ¾" Clear Face Document Envelopes, Tape Logic brand, I believe. We used these to hold and protect the shipping labels for our interlibrary loan items that we shipped through the mail, but our system changed, and we no longer use them. I will send these to the first library to respond to me with their RIDES code. WWII and local Detroit History Program Recommendation
by Katie Rothley 23 Jan '20

23 Jan '20

Dear Michlib, I just hosted Bailey Sisoy Isgro, from the Detroit History Tours, for a presentation on Rosie the Riveter and she was fantastic. She was engaging, gracious, knowledgeable and hilarious. We could really tell she loves history, especially Detroit, Michigan history, and her enthusiasm is infectious! Our community members were enthralled, and praised her as they were leaving, asking if we could have her back. We originally scheduled about an hour and a half for her presentation, but ended up going two hours because of questions and the interest! I highly recommend Bailey. Here is the contact information for her: email Augusta at "Detroit History Tours" <office(a)detroithistorytours.com>. Augusta manages the speakers who work for Detroit History Tours. Sincerely, Katie Katie Rothley, MLIS Marketing & Outreach Librarian Lyon Township Public Library 27005 S. Milford Rd., South Lyon, MI 48178 https://www.lyon.lib.mi.us/ (248) 437-8800 ext. 618

Wireless printing responses
by Margaret Bentley 23 Jan '20

23 Jan '20

Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about wireless printing. A summary of the responses follows: WIRELESS PRINTING RESPONSES *VENDOR* *LIBRARY* *OTHER COMMENTS* Princh Caro District Library https://princh.com/ Princh St Charles DL Princh Lapeer District Library https://princh.com/library-printing-solution/#.Xii_FchKiUk Princh Ruth Hughes It can be used as an app version on phones/tablets, or a web version on laptops/desktops. Our IT technician worked with Princh to connect it with our main printer, and patrons can send jobs at any time, which then sit in a queue at a staff computer or circulation computer until a member of staff release it. We have signs posted all over the building with the 'printer ID' and QR code and basic instructions, so patrons can use it on their own, and it is fairly straightforward once you download and open the app. I believe it can be set up with cards (I assume debit/credit) but we have it set to only be paid by cash (or check if it came to that) upon release at our front desk, like the rest of our prints/copies. In my experience it is easy to use and reliable-the only tricky bit is we seem to have some difficulty printing certain types of documents such as bank statements or legal forms, which we assume has something to do with encryption and compatibility. We are looking into that. Envisionware CADL supposed to be able to just attach the document to an email, send it to a provided address that differs depending on branch location and b/w or color, and then use the email they sent it from in place of their library card number, which is normally what the print jobs are tied to. So in theory, pretty easy. In practice, it’s very unreliable. Sometimes it works like a charm. Other times it doesn’t show for 10-15 minutes. Still other times it snags somewhere in the process that only IT could see and address and basically never arrive. Envisionware Ferndale Area DL Print e-mail Loutit Patrons are able to forward their prints to that email, and we print it for them. mConsole Bad Axe patrons can search for the associated printer in their phones and send to print. mConsole Ionia Community mConsole (Library Gear) White Lake We have "Library Gear" from mConsole in Sanilac as our public internet time management and print management service, and they set it up so anyone connected to our wifi can send a job to the printer. It still goes through the print management software, so they have to come to the desk to pay for it before we release it to the printer. Canon App Hudson Carnegie Patrons download app Library’s wi-fi Wakefield 1)Connect their phone to the library wi-fi 2)Open the label or document they want to print (usually but not always an attachment to an email. Some people print pictures from their phone) 3)Select the appropriate printer on the list of available printers and hit print ePrintit Jonesville DL It works as a cloud portal. We have it set up where patrons can go to our website and drop-and-drag their document to the portal and send it to us (this can be done on a laptop in the library or from their home computers) OR they can forward the item to be printed from an email to our portal (mainly for cell phones). Then, we open our portal, click the print button and the item to be printed is pulled from the cloud and sent to our printer. Library public computers T.A. Cutler Memorial we just encourage our patrons to sign on to a public access computer and print directly from there Printer On Chesterfield Twp. Printer On Charlevoix Public [App] The print job is sent wirelessly to the printer, then retrieved at the print station. Patrons can also print from home using it. Printer On Grosse Pointe We use a service called Printer On. It is quite intuitive, and hasn’t required a lot of staff assistance. We are lucky enough to have an IT person who set it all up. Here is a link to their site: https://www.printeron.com/mobile-printing.html HP Printer app Saranac Public set up on your public wifi, patrons can download the HP Smart app and print. This app is super easy to use if you have an iphone and not easy to use if you have an android! Margaret Bentley Adult Services Librarian Shiawassee District Library--Owosso 502 W. Webinars! Social work in libraries coming up on Tues ... also Website Accessibility in Feb & design thinking in March
by Kristin Fontichiaro 23 Jan '20

23 Jan '20

Howdy! Just a reminder that we have some free webinars coming up, beginning this Tuesday – join us! Free registration here: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/university-of-michigan-school-of-information-a… SOCIAL WORKERS IN LIBRARIES Tiffany Russell, Niles (MI) District Library THIS TUESDAY, Jan. 28, 4pm Eastern Have you been curious about the movement to embed social workers in public libraries but think your library is too small? Join Tiffany Russell, social worker, for a spirited conversation about the Niles District Library’s initiative to coordinate social work services across a network of Class 2-4 libraries. She’ll talk about the nuts and bolts of her program and offer strategies to help you think about how to develop relationships and a plan for your own initiative. Social workers have a lot more in common with librarians than you might think, and we know you’ll enjoy Tiffany’s effervescent style and commitment to care in her community. ----- WEB ACCESSIBILITY Colleen Van Lent, University of Michigan School of Information Tuesday, February 18, 4pm Eastern Are your library website and online materials easily "read" by those with vision or other impairments? For example, if your library's contact information is contained in a graphic instead of text, those with aging eyes or vision problems can't use screen readers to access the information they need. Is your annual report slide deck chock full of images ... but without accompanying description? That may be an accessibility issue, too. Whether you have visually impaired visitors or an aging population of patrons, accessible online content matters -- and it's important to do so to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Whether your library or school hosts its content itself or outsources web updates to a third-party vendor, you'll gain vocabulary and concrete action steps to make your web presence more welcoming to all. Join Colleen Van Lent, Lecturer IV at the University of Michigan School of Information, as she unpacks how you can make your web presence more friendly for all of your patrons. Colleen teaches hundreds of thousands of online students through her Web Design for Everybody course series <https://www.coursera.org/search?query=colleen%20van%20lent&> at Coursera.org. In 2019, Class Central <https://www.classcentral.com/report/top-moocs-2019-edition/>named her HTML5 course one of the top 100 MOOC courses of all time. Colleen's friendly, thoughtful teaching makes technical concepts easy to understand -- even for tech novices. ----- DESIGN THINKING Mega Subramamian, University of Maryland Tuesday, Mar. 10, 4pm Eastern This webinar will introduce participants to the design thinking approach and associated techniques to obtain community voice and insights at each stage of the approach – inspiration, ideation, and iteration. Using examples from youth services that articulate unique design challenges, participants will experience the design thinking stages and obtain selected skills needed to inspire, ideate, and iterate innovative programs and services with library patrons of all ages. Additionally, participants will reflect on the opportunities and challenges that their libraries encounter in terms of programs, services, systems, and spaces, and learn how to articulate them in the form of design challenges. Participants will receive additional information on resources that are available for further learning and reflection on this topic. *Dr. Mega Subramaniam* is an Associate Professor and the Co-Director of the Youth eXperience (YX) Lab <http://yxlab.ischool.umd.edu/> at the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland <https://ischool.umd.edu/>. Her research focuses on enhancing the role of libraries in fostering the mastery of emerging digital literacies among underserved young people. Her research has resulted in several national recognitions, most recently including the *Library Journal’s Movers and Shakers award <https://www.libraryjournal.com/?detailStory=mega-subramaniam-movers-shakers…>* and a Fulbright Specialist Award from the US Department of State. Her work has been generously funded by various federal and private agencies, including the National Science Foundation, Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Library of Medicine, and Google.
