FAUST Public Library of Westland 6123 Central City Parkway * Westland, Michigan 48185-9118 (734) 326-6123 * FAX (734) 595-4612 * www.westlandlibrary.org<http://www.westlandlibrary.org> POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT TECHNOLOGY AIDE (Internal and External Applicants) Date: August 13, 2019 Reports to: Head of Information Services Closing Date: Until position is filled Position Available Immediately SUMMARY: Under the direction of the immediate supervisor and/or other library staff, the Technology Aide provides assistance to patrons with using library computers and other technologies, and troubleshoots issues with printing, word processing, scanning, faxing, emailing, web browsing, wireless access, mobile devices, etc. Works with staff throughout the library on projects that enhance the library's image in the community. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE * High school graduate or GED equivalent. * 1-2 years of public library experience. * Experience with library electronic resources, e.g. OverDrive, Hoopla, and other relevant software. Schedule:28 hours per week including days, nights and weekends Union: Westland Library Union SEIU Local 517M (Non-Supervisory) Salary: $11.00 per hour Benefits: Prorated vacation leave, personal leave and paid holidays for employees working 20 or more hours per week. Library Orientation Packets, Programs

Hi! I am reaching out to learn what sort of new library user orientation programs are available at your libraries. Do you have a packet of information you make available to new card holders, and if so, what do you include? Do you host recurring presentations for new card holders? Or something different? As part of our strategic plan, we are tasked with developing regular orientations to library services. I have tried monthly presentations that summarize our services and resources, but those are not always well attended, and it seems odd to ask new users to go out of their way to learn about the library. Any insight into your process would be greatly appreciated! In this month's Practical Management, Deputy Director of Public Services for San José Public Library, Michelle Ornat, and Interim Associate Dean of Research and Scholarship for the University Library at San José State University, Emily Chan, share how their libraries respond to recruitment and retention issues, prioritize projects and services, and find opportunities in the challenges. Presenter Info: Michelle Ornat is Deputy Director of Public Services for San José Public Library (SJPL). She oversees public programming and services for SJPL's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, a joint venture with San José State University (SJSU), 24 branch locations, the MakerSpaceShip, the California Room, technical and access services, and the education and innovation divisions. Prior to this role, Michelle was Assistant Director of Chesapeake Library. Emily K. Chan is Interim Associate Dean, Research and Scholarship for the University Library at San José State University (SJSU). She oversees library programs that support campus instruction, teaching, research, and scholarship: information literacy, reference and research services, scholarly communications, collection development, and outreach. Prior to this role, Emily was the Sciences Librarian and the Scholarly Communications Librarian at SJSU. She earned Associate Librarian status in 2017. Prior to SJSU, Emily was the Sciences Librarian at University of the Pacific. Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning alternatives

Like many libraries, we were surprised to learn that Lynda.com's change to LinkedIn Learning would bring changes to authentication and that patrons will soon be compelled to create LinkedIn profiles in order to use the product. We are still considering our response but, in the meantime, I am wondering - do any other libraries subscribe to electronic resources similar to Lynda.com that they could recommend? We subscribe to Gale Courses and Learning Express Library, but I'm curious to know if anyone has any other recommendations for instructional video products. Thanks! Feedback Requested: Turning off wireless nightly

Hello all, First, I apologize for the duplicate posting, but I'm hoping to get as much feedback as possible. *The question:* We're seeing a sudden, dramatic increase of late-night, early-morning drug abuse around our building, encouraged, it seems, by availability of our wireless internet access. We have a lot of third-shift factory workers in our area, so we've always kept it on and available, but this is public safety issue. We've added locks on our exterior electrical sockets, and we're considering the option of scheduled our wireless to go down nightly, at least midnight-6am. Please let me know your thoughts. Do you turn your wireless off? What was the response from the community? If not, have you thought about it? What informed your decision.
