Do you know of a child or young adult who loves history? It's not too late for students to participate in Michigan History DayR for the 2019-2020 season. Michigan History Day, or National History Day in Michigan, is an educational program sponsored by the Historical Society of Michigan. The program is designed to encourage students in grades 4-12 to explore historical subjects using project-based learning. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtwHAA2_y7U> Watch our Michigan History Day video to learn more! This free program is very flexible and can be done school-wide, through after-school clubs, or even with individual students. It's open to students in private and public schools, as well as students who are homeschooled. Participants can be "coached" by teachers, librarians, family members, or community members. Over the course of several months, students research an individually chosen topic that connects with an annual theme. The 2020 theme of Breaking Barriers in History provides students with an opportunity to select a variety of topics from local, state, national, or world history. Each student becomes a historian, considering his or her topic from many angles and arguing a point of view. They present their research by creating an exhibit, documentary, website, performance, or paper. With the exception of the paper category, students can work on entries in teams of up to five students or as individuals. Michigan History Day student receives first-place award at National History Day finals For the first time in several years, a Michigan student won a first-place award at the National History Day finals in College Park, Maryland, in June of this year. Hello. The Secretary of State's Office is once again requesting the assistance of libraries to help raise public awareness. Today's request is about the opportunity for Michiganders to serve on the first-ever Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. We hope you will share the following newsletter/website message and social media messages through your own communication channels. I've also attached a flyer that we're hoping you will consider posting inside your building. NOTE: Some residents may need to use library computers when applying to serve on the commission and we are so grateful libraries offer this community service. Last November, Michigan voters decisively supported the "Voters Not Politicians" constitutional amendment that makes a commission of 13 randomly-selected citizens - not elected politicians, consultants or lobbyists - responsible for drawing fair and representative district lines for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress. The commission is a historic opportunity for Michigan voters to draw electoral maps and give us more impartial elections. All eligible Michigan citizens are encouraged to apply to serve on the commission, which does not require any special skills or expertise. The constitution simply requires that each commissioner performs his or her duties impartially and with integrity. The application takes about 15 minutes to complete, and commissioners will be compensated about $40,000 for their service. Commissioners will be randomly selected from the pool of eligible applicants in the summer of 2020 and will gather input from the public as well as census data to determine electoral district maps which will take effect for the 2022 elections. MeL Minute: A Heartwarming MeLCat Success Story from Cassandra Miron of the Holly Township Library

Thank you for sending this in, Cassandra! I had a patron who was looking for books on Michigan grasses. We had a couple but they weren't what he was looking for. After a bit more questioning he showed me a very long list of allergies his horse had. He said the vet told him her allergies were so extensive (they ranged from various types of mushrooms, grasses, and trees to bugs including cockroaches) he should put her down. She developed them pretty suddenly, the vet wasn't entirely sure why. The patron had tears in his eyes and looked close to breaking down. She was in a really bad state, but he had figured out all of the allergies except identifying a few grasses. He figured a couple of the grasses were probably in her feed and if he could eliminate them she'd get better really quick. She was younger and her really loved her. I did some digging on MeLCat and found a few very specific books on grasses. I told him if those didn't have what he was looking for he could call me and I'd request more until we figured it out. I was at the circulation desk when he came in about a month later to return them. He had tears in his eyes and I was worried. Before I could ask how his horse was he broke into a giant smile and thanked me. He said he was hoping I'd be working, she made a full recovery. He was able to identify the grasses with the books and he was so grateful for my help. He was overjoyed that she was going to live a healthy full life. I'm so grateful to MeLCat. I don't know what I would have done without inter-library loans. He tried searching on amazon for books before he came to me and he searched the internet for articles and information but couldn't find what he needed. The books I requested were academic and some were a bit older. I'm not confident that I could have found that information for him without MeLCat. At the very least it certainly would have taken a great deal more time, which would have made his horse suffer and who knows what the toll on her health could have resulted in.
