Survey gauging interest in a Tableau Boot Camp for Summer, 2020
by Stephanie Church 17 Jan '20

17 Jan '20

*Calling all Library Professionals! We are gauging your interest in a Tableau Boot Camp, sponsored by Case Western Reserve University’s Kelvin Smith Library.* Do you work in Tableau daily? Have you always wanted to use Tableau but were concerned about the learning curve and time commitment? Are you interested in improving your skills? No matter what level of knowledge or expertise a Tableau Boot Camp might be a place for you! Kelvin Smith Library (KSL) at Case Western Reserve University is gauging interest in a one-day, informal Tableau boot camp for library professionals in the summer, 2020. The hope is to bring together library professionals to network, learn from each other and share practical applications for Tableau. This day might include presentations, posters and hands-on, interactive workshops on how to analyze and visualize data in your library using Tableau. Some potential topics include connecting Sierra to Tableau, mapping space usage data, and assessing international impact. Please fill out the survey <https://cwru.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cLO0f5TTY5omn3f> if you might be interested in attending. This is neither a commitment that the event will happen nor that you will attend, we are just gauging your interest. The survey runs through February 14, 2020 and should only take about 2 minutes to complete. We thank you for your time and interest. Best regards, The KSL Informal Librarian Tableau Club -- Stephanie Church Acquisitions Librarian (216)368-3514 https://public.tableau.com/profile/stephanie.church#!/

ALA News: ALA Appoints Tracie D. Hall as Executive Director
by Jennifer L. Dean 16 Jan '20

16 Jan '20

ALA appoints Tracie D. Hall as Executive Director<http://bit.ly/3aaElhQ> The American Library Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Tracie D. Hall as its executive director, effective Feb. 24, 2020. Following a nationwide search, Hall was selected to succeed Mary W. Ghikas, who has worked for ALA since 1995 and served as executive director since January 2018. Hall is the first female African American executive director in ALA’s history. “We are thrilled to be welcoming Tracie back to the ALA family,” said ALA President Wanda K. Brown. “Her unique combination of philanthropy and library know-how position her to be the leader ALA needs today. She is optimistic, energizing, and innovative, qualities that will serve the association well as it continues its investments in advocacy, development, and information technology.” Hall is no stranger to libraries, or to ALA. Over the years she has worked at the Seattle Public Library, the New Haven Free Library, Queens Public Library and Hartford Free Public Library. In 1998, she was among the first cohort of ALA’s Spectrum Scholars, a grant program to diversify librarianship, and she served as the director of ALA’s Office for Diversity in the early 2000s. Most recently, Hall directed the culture portfolio at the Chicago-based Joyce Foundation, developing new grant programs designed to catalyze and scale neighborhood-based arts venues, cultural programming and creative entrepreneurship. A civic leader in Chicago, Hall was appointed to serve on the City of Chicago’s Cultural Advisory Council at the beginning of 2020. Hall has also served in multiple roles in academia, including as assistant dean of Dominican’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science in River Forest, Illinois. people counters
by Maggie McKeithan 16 Jan '20

16 Jan '20

We're in the market for a new people counter at our front door. Currently, we use a magnet to physically check the counter at the end of each day. We would like one a little more high-tech, so we could access reports online and track traffic by the hour. What kind of people counter do you have? Would you recommend it? Do you know the approximate cost? Let me know! Thanks in advance, Maggie McKeithan Library Director Spring Lake District Library 616-846-5770 extension 1161
