Community input needed: Justice For All Town Hall Meetings 2/14 and 2/24
by Koscielniak, Kimberly (MDE) 30 Jan '20

30 Jan '20

* Did you know that in three out of four civil legal cases, at least one party represents themselves in court because they can't afford an attorney? * Did you know that the right to a lawyer only applies in criminal cases, not civil cases? Good morning: The Michigan Justice for All (JFA) Task Force is committed to creating a civil justice system that 100% of people can access. With input from stakeholders across Michigan, the Task Force will first inventory the civil justice landscape, identify gaps and barriers to access, and then develop and implement a comprehensive approach to fill gaps and eliminate barriers. We're hoping to get input from community organizations, librarians, and the public about problems people face trying to deal with family law issues, eviction, debt collection, small claims, guardianship, and other civil legal problems - essentially, everything other than criminal law problems. I'm delighted to share with you that the JFA Task Force is hosting two Town Hall meetings hosted by Chief Justice Bridget McCormack and Justice Brian Zahra in February. The first town hall meeting is in Grand Rapids on 2/14 from 10 am - 12 pm, and the second meeting is in Detroit on 2/24 from 6 - 8 pm. Details are in the attached flyer. The purpose of these meetings is to inform and engage members of the public, community service partners, and elected officials in the work of the JFA Task Force. We need your help to spread the word about these meetings to stakeholders, especially members of the public, whose voice we need to hear. Please share widely the attached flyer, particularly with patrons and social service agencies in your area and anyone else you work with who may be interested. Please also join us if you are able - we hope to have full rooms and robust discussion! Thank you, Kim Koscielniak Contracts, criminal law, and constitutional issues! by Breed, Liz (MDE) 30 Jan '20

30 Jan '20

[A close up of a sign Description automatically generated]Testing season will be in full swing before you know it! With the extensive inventory of practice tests available in LearningExpress Library<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=lex>, learners will be ready to tackle any test that comes their way. Some of the most popular areas in LearningExpress are highlighted below, but be sure to take a moment to explore all the helpful test-prep resources available. Prepare for College The first thing to note when you open the LearningExpress Library<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=lex> is that there are 3 platforms that can be searched: Public Library, College Library and High School Library. Each platform has up to 9 Centers of content unique to that audience. While you will see some Centers in multiple locations, there are a handful that only appear in one place. One of these is the Prepare for College<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=PS…> Center<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=PS…> under the High School umbrella. This is the best location to find every type of academic test prep available in LearningExpress. Study guides, flash cards, eBooks, and multiple practices tests for ACT, AP, PSAT, SAT, TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and college placement are all readily available. One feature to remember is that since you must be logged in to access the tests, they can be digested in small chunks, as LearningExpress will save your spot until you’re ready to forge ahead. Learn at your own pace! Explore Careers All three platforms offer opportunities to prepare for multiple occupations and military careers. Within the Public Library and High School Library areas, the Career Exploration<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=PS…> Center<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=PS…> guides the user to practice tests on subjects such as cosmetology, emergency medical services, nursing and plumbing. Additionally, the military test-prep offerings are extensive: ASVAB, SIFT, AFOQT, Officer Candidate, Flight Aptitude and CFAT. You can find these items and the WorkKeys® practice tests under the High School platform in the Career Preparation<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=le…> Center<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=le…> as well. Practice the GED Finally, if someone you know is seeking some practice for the GED (or GED in Spanish) test, you can find that tool in the High School Equivalency Center<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=le…> under the Public Library platform. In the same location, you will also find practice for the HiSET and TASC exams. There is so much information and so many tools within LearningExpress that supports those preparing for new careers or the next level in their academic pursuits. I encourage you to look inside the LearningExpress Library today. Brought to you by Ann Kaskinen from the MeL Team. Supporting Michigan Libraries by Putting You First. Hello fellow Michlibers, Sharing info about this tool for measuring the veracity of news web sites with you all. Gabby Deutch from NewsGuard presented their web extension at the TLN Technology Committee meeting last week. Apparently, the power point presentation is too large to include in this message, so if you're interested in learning more, I can email it to you off list. If you're interested in adding the extension to your library computers it's free for libraries and you can contact her about getting connected. She also sent me a few other attachments specifically about becoming a library partner. If you're interested email me off list. Visit https://www.newsguardtech.com/ to research it yourself.
