Free Webinar: Civil Legal Justice: The Crucial Role of Libraries
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 07 Feb '20

07 Feb '20

Civil Legal Justice: The Crucial Role of Libraries<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/civil-legal-justice-the-cruc…> When: February 11 @ 3:00PM Eastern Cost: Free In this webinar, learn about the ways public libraries can address the justice gap, connecting people with information as they navigate the complexities of the legal system. The lofty U.S. ideal of "justice for all" fails the equity test because many people, especially our nation's poorest individuals, fall into the "justice gap"-the divide between the civil legal needs of low-income people and the resources to meet those needs. Many of your community members who instinctively turn to the library for help with crises in their lives might be on the verge of falling into this gap. Though legal issues can be intimidating for library staff, public libraries are well positioned to help reduce the justice gap. Join us to learn about the status of civil legal justice in our system and about the vital role you can play in connecting people with information and supporting them as they navigate the complexities of the legal system. Law librarian Catherine McGuire, who has conducted extensive trainings with public libraries, will share insights into interacting with patrons who approach the library with civil legal needs. With a basic understanding of the civil legal justice landscape, we hope you will be motivated to plunge deeper into helping close the justice gap by taking the live, multi-week online course to be offered in April. Presented by: Catherine McGuire, Head of Reference and Outreach, Thurgood Marshall State Law Library, Maryland; Luis Interiano, Reference Librarian, West Baton Rouge Library, Port Allen, Louisiana; and Betha Gutsche, WebJunction Programs Manager, OCLC Evette M. Atkin Continuing Education Consultant Library of Michigan atkine(a)michigan.gov<mailto:atkine@michigan.gov> These programs are supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Re: [Michlib-l] Event Calendar/Room Reservation Software
by Angela M Brcka 06 Feb '20

Hi Keegan, At Western Michigan University, we use LibCal within Springshare's LibApps platform for both event calendaring and room reservations as well as for managing hours for our locations. On the pro side, LibCal is easy to learn and easy to use. I have also been impressed with Springshare's responsiveness to questions and the speed at which they resolve issues. Springshare regularly updates their platform and has a feature tracking system that they use to keep track of customer input. On the con side, although LibCal is good at managing simple events, it is not robust enough to handle complex events like conferences with breakout sessions. I also find the mobile interface for parts of LibCal to be cumbersome. If you have any more questions about our experience with LibCal, do not hesitate to contact me directly. I am investigating options for new event calendar/room reservation software for our library. We currently have Demco. I would love to hear from any libraries that have something different. If you could share information on ease of use for staff and patrons, customer service responsiveness, update frequency and how well the company responses to requests for innovation, and anything else noteworthy along with a link to your calendar, It would be very much appreciated. Please reply off list and I will compile the results to share. Thanks, Keegan [cid:image001.jpg@01D5DC2A.8330D390]<https://troypl.org/> Keegan Sulecki Head of Youth Services 510 W.
