Checking in with CADL
by Smiley,Trent 09 Feb '20

09 Feb '20

Hello, Here are some of the cool things going on at CADL. Blind Date with a Book - We are currently running this popular promotion through February 15. CADL members can check out a title from special displays in our 13 locations for a chance to win a pair of tickets to see My Fair Lady or Wicked at Michigan State University's Wharton Center. This year, members can also download one of the disguised titles from our hoopla collection. Awareness has been created through our events guide, branch signage, media interviews, online, print, radio and TV ads, including placement in the Oscars. Print Ad: Attached TV Ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SidFKqhr6G4 Radio Ad: https://audioboom.com/posts/7499977-blind-date-with-a-book CADL Network - We are excited to announce that our two television shows (CADLcast and CADLtales) are now airing weekly on Lansing's ABC affiliate WLAJ 53 after Good Morning America. CADLcast which is hosted by CADL Executive Director Scott Duimstra is an extension of his podcast and features conversations with community leaders and members of our staff. CADLtales is a storytime show that features our staff sharing stories and songs. Rather than depend on the media to share the CADL story, we are building our own network of influence which includes TV, major events, podcasts and staff written columns that appear regularly in local publications like Capital Area Women's Lifestyle, Between the Lines and Healthy & Fit Magazines. CADL will also use this network to attract high-profile partnerships and generate sponsorship revenue. Free United for Libraries webinar on Feb. 19 - "Friends and Trustees Under 40: Recruit Them, Retain Them, Engage Them"
by Shannon White - Library of Michigan 07 Feb '20

07 Feb '20

Free United for Libraries webinar on Feb. 19 - "Friends and Trustees Under 40: Recruit Them, Retain Them, Engage Them" United for Libraries will host Friends and Trustees Under 40: Recruit Them, Retain Them, Engage Them on Wednesday, February 19 at 2 p.m. eastern. Presenters Madeline Jarvis, Tess Wilson, Lina Bertinelli, and Kathy Kosinski will lead the webinar. http://www.ala.org/united/friends-and-trustees-under-40-recruit-them-retain… Registration is free for Michigan libraries and groups as a United for Libraries Statewide Group Member - register at https://forms.gle/CgMn8zEs3Nb2S7Vf6. Millennials are more likely than other adults to have visited the library recently. However, most friends and trustee boards do not have even a single millennial member (Pew 2016, ALA 2018). What accounts for this discrepancy between the demographics of our library users and library civic leaders, and how do we rectify it? The presenters will argue for the importance of developing generationally representative boards and explore common barriers to service for those under 40. Friends and Trustees Under 40: Recruit Them, Retain Them, Engage Them is an intensive follow-up to the Monthly Member Forum presented by United for Libraries in January, "Recruiting Younger Board Members for Trustees, Friends, and Foundations." This webinar will expand on the information that was overviewed in January's forum. Participants will leave with practical strategies for identifying and recruiting the right millennials to serve and for adapting board cultures to engage and retain them. Madeline Jarvis is the Adult and Information Services Manager at the Marion (IA) Public Library. She and her team cultivate collections, services, and partnerships to serve the Marion community. She is passionate about identifying and eliminating barriers to resources for her patrons and helping the library serve as a catalyst for community development. Tess Wilson is the Community Engagement Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine - Middle Atlantic Region. She serves as YALSA Blog Manager and Youth Services Division Chair for the PA Library Association. She was a 2018 ALA Emerging Leader and is an active privacy advocate with the Library Freedom Project. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Chatham University and her MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh. Lina Bertinelli is the Workforce Librarian at the Enoch Pratt Free Library and Maryland State Library Resource Center in Baltimore, MD. Kathy Kosinski is the Member Services and Outreach Manager at Califa Group. Previously, she worked at the Library of Michigan as the Statewide Library Services Analyst. Michigan public library membership in United for Libraries was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Lodging at SRLC - Plenty of Rooms Available
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 07 Feb '20

07 Feb '20

Greetings! I see there has been some chatter on the list regarding rooms for this year's conference at the Grand Traverse Resort. Rest assured, we still have plenty of rooms available. The only exception is for the night of Sunday, April 12. Despite expanding our Sunday night room block from 2018, we have had a record number of attendees reserve rooms for Sunday evening. If when trying to reserve your room, you are unable to get a room for Sunday evening, please feel free to call the resort directly. A handful of attendees have had success doing so. However, please be aware that we cannot guarantee that the Grand Traverse Resort will be able to accommodate requests for Sunday night lodging. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Evette M. Atkin Continuing Education Consultant Library of Michigan atkine(a)michigan.gov<mailto:atkine@michigan.gov>
