Library of Michigan closed today due to facilities issues
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 12 Feb '20

12 Feb '20

All downtown Lansing DTMB-managed buildings including the Library of Michigan will be closed today, Feb. 12, 2020, with the exclusion of the Lottery Building. An unexpected problem with steam delivery from the Lansing Board of Water & Light has caused an inability to properly heat the facilities in the downtown Lansing buildings only. ALA News: ALA takes FYI 2021 budget cuts seriously, urges members of Congress to visit libraries

Congratulations to Michigan's own Larry Neal & Alexandra Rivera on their election to the ALA Executive Board. Thank you for representing us so well! Jennifer ALA takes FY 2021 budget cuts seriously, urges members of Congress to visit libraries<http://bit.ly/2UNgYWn> The American Library Association (ALA) issued the following statement by ALA President Wanda Brown in response to the White House’s fiscal year (FY) 2021 budget request. “The White House proposal to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) again dismisses the value of America’s 120,000 academic, public, school and special libraries. The administration’s new budget not only brushes aside IMLS, it decreases funding for other library-eligible education programs.” Read more<http://bit.ly/2UNgYWn> Booker, Neal and Rivera to serve on ALA Executive Board<http://bit.ly/2OJLrAI> The American Library Association (ALA) Council has elected Latrice Booker, Larry Neal and Alexandra Rivera to serve on the ALA Executive Board. The Executive Board election took place during the 2020 ALA Midwinter Meeting held Jan. 24-28, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Elected board members will begin a three-year term beginning in July 2020 and concluding in June 2023. The program has been funded by a generous grant from Andrew and Carol Phelps, the parents of two library master’s students. To expand the scope of the program, ALA invites additional contributions of any size. All donations made to ALA’s Cultural Communities Fund (CCF) through Earth Day (April 22) will be used to expand the program to additional libraries. Housing Values and proximity to Public Library
by Jaema Berman 11 Feb '20

11 Feb '20

Dear Colleagues, As part of promoting the idea of a new location for our library in Addison Twp., I am researching the relationship of housing values as they relate to proximity to a public library. Would anyone know a source for this data. I have found an article on the ALA website as regards to Philadelphia, but alas, that seems like a bit of a stretch. Best always, Jaema Jaema Berman Library Director Addison Twp. Public Library 1400 Rochester Rd. Leonard, MI 48367 (248) 628-7180 www.addisontwp.michlibrary.org “A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. It is a never failing spring in the desert.” ― Andrew Carnegie

Fine Free policy compilation
by Amber Hughey 11 Feb '20

11 Feb '20

I'd just like to thank everyone who sent me their policy. It's greatly appreciated! ----------------------------- We don't have a written policy about it, but we’ve been fine-free for all items since the mid-1990s. Instead we have a donation jar on the circ desk and the patrons who feel guilty about returning overdue books put money in the jar. New patrons are absolutely delighted when we tell them we don’t charge fines. It’s such a source of goodwill. We do charge full price for lost or damaged items, though. -------- We just went Fine Free Feb. 1. The response has been VERY positive. Here’s a link to our info on our web site https://grossepointelibrary.org/news/gppl-no-longer-charges-overdue-fines And here’s a link to our FAQs that talk about fines. https://grossepointelibrary.org/frequently-asked-questions ------- https://gardencitylib.org/PDF/PoliciesPDF/FinesFeesLoanSchedule2019.pdf ------ We made the switch back in July. We set it up so that none of our items will assign fines for being overdue. I know some libraries simply forgive fines when items are returned, but we're part of a consortium, and close enough to other libraries that we were concerned people from the area would take advantage of our policies if we did that. Didn't want to step on any toes. We do still expect patrons to pay for lost items (not returned 21 days after the due date), though as long as the item comes back SOMEDAY, no overdue fines will be given. We also use a collection agency, that gets involved if items are lost long enough, and are above a cumulative value of $25. Being sent to collections incurs a $10 fee, and we DO expect that to be paid as well, even if the items are returned. We block patrons if they have too many items overdue, the cap is 24. They're also blocked if they have ANY items marked lost. If you'd like, here's a link to our page regarding the issue. https://www.southgate.lib.mi.us/Overdue.html ------ We just circulate as usual only we do not charge fines on any of our items . We also understand that other libraries do and let our patrons know that if another library"s item is returned late, there will be a fee. We notify our patrons by phone or email when the item is overdue and by mail when it is considered lost. Patrons are charged for lost or damaged items. If one item goes to lost, we block the account until it has been resolved. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I am happy to help!

by Stephanie Church 11 Feb '20

11 Feb '20

The Tableau Boot Camp for Library Professionals Interest Form closes FRIDAY! Don't miss out on providing your feedback to Kelvin Smith Library! Kelvin Smith Library (KSL) at Case Western Reserve University is gauging interest in a one-day, informal Tableau boot camp for library professionals in the summer, 2020. The hope is to bring together library professionals to network, learn from each other and share practical applications for Tableau. This day might include presentations, posters, and hands-on, interactive workshops on how to analyze and visualize data in your library using Tableau. Some potential topics include connecting Sierra to Tableau, mapping space usage data, collection assessment, and assessing international impact. Please fill out the survey <https://cwru.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cLO0f5TTY5omn3f> if you might be interested in attending. This is neither a commitment that the event will happen nor that you will attend, we are just gauging your interest. Thank you for your time and interest.
