We invite you to join MCLS staff for the next dialogue and discussion in our weekly series of conversations around the environment we find ourselves working in right now and what opportunities might exist as we move forward. This week we’ll be joined by State Librarians Jake Speer and Randy Riley as we discuss and co-create the post-pandemic library world, from re-opening to potential reinvention. Part support group, part visioning, let’s share our thoughts and ideas as we imagine our preferred future. Join us this week on Friday, April 10 at 11:00 EDT (10:00 am CDT) on Zoom https://zoom.us/j/172695113. Before the discussion, you might check out this blog post<https://blogs.ifla.org/lpa/2020/04/06/now-and-next-what-a-post-covid-world-…> from IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions), which is relevant to our topic of conversation. https://blogs.ifla.org/lpa/2020/04/06/now-and-next-what-a-post-covid-world-… You can view the recordings and chat logs from the previous dialogues by visiting https://www.mcls.org/training-events/presentation-slides/. Celebrity MeL Minute: MeL eBook Collections from EBSCOhost
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 09 Apr '20

09 Apr '20

[A close up of a sign Description automatically generated]A Celebrity MeL Minute brought to you by Holly Hibner and Mary Kelly of Awful Library Books<http://awfullibrarybooks.net/> Each year, a Catholic school in the neighborhood partners with the library on a social issue report assignment. Our Teen Librarians go to the school to teach students how to use the library's e-resources and how to organize their research. Then the eighth graders come to the library to conduct that research. MeL's e-book collections from EBSCOhost<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=eb…> are a highlight of this instruction. When the eighth graders, strong consumers of electronic media, find out they can access e-books from MeL on their mobile devices, they are surprised, they are relieved, and - I dare say - they are impressed. They can do their homework in their space and their time. Going straight to the middle school e-book collection makes their research on difficult and complicated topics like civil rights, abortion, endangered species, gender identity, etc. age appropriate, authoritative, and relevant to the context of their assignment. When patrons of all ages, with any number of interests and information needs, approach librarians, it goes a long way to be able to recommend a resource like the MeL e-book collections. The content is relevant, and the platform is convenient. I've recommended this resource to businesspeople, travelers, consumers, and many, many more. The MeL e-book collections cover quite a variety of topics. There is truly something for everyone. They are also extremely flexible in how they can be used. MeL's EBSCOhost e-books are downloadable in ePub or PDF format. The PDF version is a fixed layout of the print version of the book, and ePub allows the text to be adjusted easily for any device or screen size. With Adobe Digital Editions (freely downloadable from Adobe.com) e-books are mobile friendly. The ePub format also makes e-books compatible with adaptive technologies, including screen reading software. The table of contents in the e-books links directly to a specific chapter. You can also read the e-book right in your web browser. The e-books can be organized and downloaded to Google Drive - or any other file storage. Passages can be highlighted, shared, notes added, emailed, and printed. For researchers and students, there is an automatic citation generator that can be used in conjunction with popular products like RefWorks, EndNote, or Zotero. For librarians and teachers, integrating these e-book features should be an essential part of instruction. Regardless of your reading and research interests, these extra features make staying organized easier and can help you stay focused on your project. Those taking online classes will find the integration of MeL e-books with Google Drive and Google Classroom extremely useful! Supporting Michigan Libraries by Putting You First. We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your colleagues and networks. MeL eResources are available to Michigan residents or for Michigan library or school access only. #IMLSGrant Sonya Schryer Norris Library Consultant Library of Michigan Michigan Department of Education 517-335-1498 Norriss2(a)michigan.gov<mailto:Norriss2@michigan.gov> https://michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan https://mel.org<https://mel.org/> http://michlibrary.org<http://michlibrary.org/> You have the power to shape your future, and the future of all children, by counting everyone in your home in the 2020 Census<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmy2020cen…>. FW: Free United for Libraries webinar on April 15: "Advocacy for Your Library During a Crisis"
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 08 Apr '20

Hello! The CARE Act included money for local governments and this money is being distributed through the states. The bulk of the funds are for local governments with populations above 500,000 people. It is currently unclear how many local governments in Michigan will be able to access funds, and what that process will look like. One way Michigan libraries can get their voices heard on this program and others as entities that need assistance is through contacts with state and local government leaders. This webinar below, through United for Libraries will be a great start to advocating for Michigan Libraries during these uncertain times. Please see information below, Sincerely, Clare Clare D. by Jobeth Bradbury 08 Apr '20

08 Apr '20

Chief Executive - Kansas City (MO) Public Library-Closes this Sunday, April 12 BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF READERS. The Kansas City Public Library<https://www.kclibrary.org/> Board of Trustees seeks a Chief Executive who will lead the institution, championing a vision for the Library that promotes and advances its vital connections and continues to serve as an integral part of the fabric of the community. From its nationally renowned public programming, innovative outreach, and local, regional and national leadership in digital literacy, the award-winning Kansas City Public Library has helped redefine the role of public libraries. Governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees, the Library is an independent urban public library district serving 213,000 residents of the City's central core, part of the neighboring City of Independence, and the City of Sugar Creek. Working from 10 library locations (plus a digital branch and an active outreach program), the Chief Executive will grow KCPL's commitment to a diverse, multicultural, and engaged community of patrons and partners pursuing the Library's 2020 Strategic Goals<http://www.bradburymiller.com/kcpl2020strategicgoals.pdf>. Specific opportunities include: developing and implementing the strategic plan; completing immediate capital construction projects; fundraising to complete a capital development plan; recruiting and retaining staff at all levels that mirror the communities served; and rebuilding the development staff and infrastructure. by Simlar, Cathleen (MDOS) 07 Apr '20

07 Apr '20

Hello. I hope everyone is doing well during this difficult time. Though libraries are closed, we realize many residents still rely on you for community news and updates, so we're hoping those libraries who have an election on May 5 will consider publishing the following update on their websites or in their community newsletters. Below is the article and for your reference, attached is a list of communities hosting May 5 elections. As always, thank you so much for your help. A message from Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson Vote safely by voting absentee on May 5 By executive order, Michigan's May 5 local elections in 70 communities across Michigan will be held primarily by mail to help ensure both public health and democratic rights are protected. To support this effort, an absent voter ballot application will be mailed to all registered voters in those communities along with a postage-paid return envelope. Once an application is received, a ballot will be provided by mail. Does your community have an election on May 5? Find out here<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.michi…>. Voters can also track the status of their absentee ballot by visiting Michigan.gov/Vote<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.michig…>. Cathleen P.
