Announcement: Nancy Sterk, Chair Person of the Hart Area Public Library Board of Trustees, announces the retirement of library Director Kay Williams and the promotion of Kathleen Rash as the new Director of the Hart Library. Ms. Rash, who has served as the Assistant Director for the Library since August of 2013, assumes her new position on October 12. Kathleen began working for the Hart Library as a circulation clerk in 2011. She states, “I'm thrilled to be selected for this new role. I'm looking forward to continuing to build upon my relationship with the staff, trustees and the community.” Originally from Macomb County in southeastern Michigan, she has lived in Oceana and Muskegon Counties with her husband, Aaron, and their five children for the last 12 years. Kathleen is enthusiastic about creating a vision for how the library can best serve and adapt to the evolving needs of the community. She has both a BS and a BA from Michigan State University, enjoys hiking with her family, cooking vegetarian meals, travel and, of course, reading. While excited about the new possibilities under Kathleen's stewardship, we also announce with regret, the retirement of Kay Williams, who has served as our Library's Director for the past seven years. Kay and her staff have ably served our community during this time by staying focused on the key metrics of freshening the collection, promotion of broad community use of the library through various programming initiatives, improved user experience, and technology improvements. “I'm so proud of my staff and how hard they work to support our extended library community. No one is a stranger to us, and all are welcome to use our services. I'm confident Kathleen and now her staff will find new and even better ways going forward to promote the love of learning and reading.” Kay's future plans include spending more time with her grandkids, traveling, and reading. She is planning to continue to participate with the Friends of the Hart Library group and doing other volunteer work. Kathleen looks forward to working with all of you. Best Wishes, Kay Williams Library Director Hart Area Public Library

* Are you trying to figure out some new ways to serve your community but need to learn more to take those steps? * Do you need more skills and confidence to help with patron questions about technology? * Do you have staff that need extra support in the area of digital literacy? If so, then the new Foundations of Digital Literacy workshops may be just the right start for you and your colleagues. These virtual workshops are designed to help library staff gain confidence in everyday interactions with technology and is intended for participants who would like or feel they need a more basic introduction to digital literacy topics. This workshop is being offered virtually multiple times throughout September and October to accommodate smaller participation limits in each workshop to ensure everyone can get individual attention and also feel comfortable in the space. You will get to have personal attention and participate in small group activities as you learn. The Foundations of Digital Literacy workshop is designed to help library staff gain confidence in everyday interactions with technology and is intended for participants who would like or feel they need a more basic introduction to digital literacy topics. Knowledge and skills taught and practiced during the workshop will include: * A basic understanding of hardware including internal and external components of various devices * How various types of networks function * The composition of webpages and websites * Various browsers and their functionality * Search engines and tips to perform an effective web search * Tips on how to evaluate search results * Cloud computing * The internet of things * Information on digital privacy The workshops will be presented virtually through Zoom, so participants will need to have a basic knowledge of how to log in to a Zoom meeting. Instruction on the basics of using Zoom for a training workshop will be delivered at the beginning of the workshop. This workshop is intended to be an interactive course that involves discussion and hands-on practice, and participants should plan to have a microphone enabled, and if possible, to turn their cameras on for full participation. These courses are brought to the Michigan library community by MCLS as part of the continued efforts surrounding engagement and libraries and is supported by the Library of Michigan with federal funding from IMLS. To register for the course, visit the MCLS website at: https://www.mcls.org/training-events/events/foundations-digital-literacy-20… Currently there are 5 sessions left with seats available in October. Be sure to get your spot and grow your confidence, skills, and knowledge in this area to help support your own local community. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Shannon White Library Development Manager Library of Michigan, 702 W. EO 2020-183 & EO 2020-184
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 29 Sep '20

29 Sep '20

Overview of EO 2020-183 AND EO 2020-184 The primary effect of these new executive orders for libraries are the provisions amending restrictions on "social gatherings or organized events." The explanation for these changes is below: EO 2020-183<https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-540568--,00.html>- Safe Start (Rescission of EO 2020-176, EO 2020-180, & EO 2020-181) EO 2020-183 continues Regions 1-5, & 7 requirement that all work that can be done remotely must be done remotely. Regions 6 & 8 are not included in this requirement, but it is recommended that all work that can be done remotely should be done remotely. Athletic and sports related mask requirements from EO 2020-180 have been integrated into EO 2020-183. Amends restrictions on "social gatherings and organized events." The change of most concern to libraries is the amendments to the restrictions on "social gatherings or organized events." The requirements are separated into two categories- FIXED Seating (i.e. bolted to the floor, like theaters, some concert venues and sports venues). and NON-FIXED. The information below is for NON-FIXED SEATING, which is applicable to the vast majority of public libraries. The information for FIXED SEATING is included in the updated EO document being posted to the Library of Michigan website. NEW RESTRICTIONS: As of Oct 9, 2020, events held in library meeting or event rooms, such as group meetings, board meetings, programs, etc. that meet the definition of " organized event or social gathering" as listed in EO 2020-183 and its FAQ (https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/0,9753,7-406-98178_98455-540626--,00.h… ) must limit attendance to: Regions 1-5 & 7 20 people per 1000 sq. ft , or 1 person for every 50 sq. Ft. of space in the room. If your library has a 30ft x 40ft room, 30 x 40 = 1,200 sq. ft, so that would be 20 +4 or 24 people, OR 1,200 sq. Ft. / 50 = 24 people If your room is smaller, say 20ft x 15 ft,20 x 15 = 400sq.ft.. 400 / 50 = 8 Therefore that room could have 8 people. Regions 6 & 8 25 people per 1,000 sq. ft, or 1 person for every 40sq.ft. A 30ft x40ft room, 30 x 40 = 1,200 sq. Ft. 1,200 sq. Ft / 40 sq. Ft. per person = 30 people. A smaller room 20ft. x 15ft. = 400 sq. Ft., so 400 / 40 = 10 people. These occupancies would be counted towards any general occupancy limits in force for the library EO 2020-184<https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-540600--,00.html>, Safeguards to protect Michigan's workers from COVID-19 - Rescission of Executive Order 2020-175. Amends existing industry and workplace safety restrictions to include guidelines and requirements for sports venues, movie theaters, amusement and entertainment venues and gyms/exercise facilities. Under section 6 retail, changes occupancy limit of buildings with public space 50,000sq. ft. and over from 4 people for every 1,000 sq. ft to 20 people per 1,000 sq. ft.. Removes requirement from section 6 to "Limit staffing to minimum number necessary to operate." EO 2020-184 updates overall occupancy limits in section 6 (retail/libraries/museums) for buildings 50,000sq.ft or more of public space. Existing limits for buildings up to 50,000sq.ft. of public space are still in effect: Regions 1-5,& 7: Buildings less than 50,000 sq. ft. of public space = 25% occupancy Buildings with 50,000 sq. Ft. or more of public space = 20 people per sq. Ft. (this number was increased from 4 persons per 1,000 sq. ft.) Regions 6 & 8 No occupancy limit OTHER THAN meeting/gathering limit above and limiting occupancy to number of people that can occupy building with 6ft. of social distancing requirement. For additional information on these, and other EOs in effect, please go to the Library of Michigan's Coronavirus Resources page Michigan's Coronavirus Resources page https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,9327,7-381-88855_98256---,00.h… As always, libraries should consult their library attorneys on the compliance of Executive Orders. American Creed: Community Conversation (PBS Film Discussion) Oct 3
by Jeff Milo 29 Sep '20

29 Sep '20

The Ferndale Library will be hosting a virtual (ZOOM) discussion of the PBS documentary American Creed on Saturday, October 3, moderated by history professor and humanities scholar Gregory Sumner, Ph.D., of U-D Mercy. Please watch the 1-hour film before attending: https://www.pbs.org/video/american-creed-ikwuqf/ <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pbs.org%2Fvideo%2Famerican…> The film explores questions like: Who are we? Is there a useful “Unum” to be salvaged from our increasingly fractious “Pluribus?" Where are we headed as individual citizens and as a people? Sumner will talk about ways in which we can constructively explore America’s ideals and identity. In American Creed, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy come together from different points of view for a spirited investigation of the idea of a unifying American creed. Their inquiry frames stories of citizen-activists seeking to realize their own visions of America’s promise across divides. View the film HERE: https://www.pbs.org/video/american-creed-ikwuqf/ <https://www.pbs.org/video/american-creed-ikwuqf/?fbclid=IwAR09_xc0YHIMM411I…> You can reserve your spot for the discussion (and get a reminder email the day before) HERE: http://tiny.cc/fadlcreed <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Ftiny.cc%2Ffadlcreed%3Ffbclid%3D…> Sumner's virtual presentation on American Creed will be Saturday, October 3, at 2pm.
