Question About a Book
by Emily Blakowski 03 Oct '20

03 Oct '20

Hi Everybody, At my work today, a patron asked me if we had a certain juvenile book even though she didn't remember the name of it. However, she does recall that it's about a girl who is trying to create her masterpiece, but her brother Art is constantly messing it up. In the end, according to the lady, the main character is kind to him . Does any of this ring a bell? If so, let me know. Sincerely, Emily Blakowski Technical Services Library Assistant Romeo District Library

by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 02 Oct '20

02 Oct '20

Governor Whitmer signed EO 2020-192 (https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/MIEOG/2020/10/02/file_attachmen… ) this afternoon which moves Region 8 (The Upper Penninsula) back into phase 4 as a result of an uptick in Covid-19 infections. * REGION 6 IS NOT AFFECTED BY THESE CHANGES. LIBRARIES IN REGION 6 ARE UNDER THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED FOR THEM IN EO 2020-183 & EO 2020-184, AND IN EFFECT ON 10/9/2020 * THESE RESTRICTIONS ARE ALREADY IN EFFECT AS OF 10/9/2020 FOR REGIONS 1-5&7 UNDER EO 2020-183 & 2020-184 These amendments are requiring Region 8 to adhere to the same restrictions in social gathering and organized events; overall occupancy restrictions, and remote work requirements as Regions 1-5 &7 Changes below go into effect on October 9,2020 Specifically, Region 8 is now subject to the same occupancy and gathering limits and Regions 1-5, and 7. That is: For Libraries in the UP (Region 8) this means: Amendment of EO 2020-183 (https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-540600--,00.html) , Section 6: Social Gatherings and Organized Event limitations: Theaters and spaces with FIXED SEATING (seats attached to the floor)- Occupancy is 20% of occupancy rather than the previous 25%. Meeting rooms and event rooms with NON-FIXED SEATING (that is standard meeting, event, conference rooms)- occupancy is now 50 sq. ft per person (or 20 people per 1,000 sq. ft.) rather than the 40 sq. ft. per person listed in EO 2020-183. Amendment of EO 2020-183 (https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-540600--,00.html ) section 1: Region 8 is included in the " Work that is able to be dome remotely MUST be done remotely." (Rather than the previous "Work that is able to be done remotely SHOULD be done remotely.") Amendment of EO 2020-184 (https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-540568--,00.html) , Section 6: Libraries are again required to limit overall occupancy to 25% of total occupancy for buildings with LESS than 50,000 sq. ft. Buildings with public space of 50,000 sq. ft. or more must limit to 20 people per 1,000 sq. ft. For additional information, please see the text of EO 2020-192, EO 2020-183, & EO 2020-184 Libraries unclear on their individual requirements should consult their library attorneys for clarification. Youth & Teen Services Updates
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 02 Oct '20

02 Oct '20

Ready to Read Michigan The Library of Michigan is excited to share that the following materials have just this morning been sent directly to public library directors, as part of our Ready to Read Michigan program<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.michi…>! Due to limited quantities purchased I cannot share the links widely via this listserv, but once your director forwards them to staff you are free to download the materials and use as you see fit to engage your patrons/community: * PLA's 2021 Early Literacy Activities Calendar: HOT "off the presses!!!" Libraries can print and distribute it to patrons monthly, use it in e-Newsletters, or even post it on your library website! Here is an example of how Herrick District Library uses it on their web platform, to mix in additional early literacy tips, rhymes & videos: https://communitycollections.herrickdl.org/HDL/early-lit-calendars<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcommunity…>. * Every Child Ready to Read Toolkit for Serving Early Childhood Educators (2017): This toolkit comes with a guide to serving early childhood educators, pre-made slides, fillable agendas, and more! Please use this to engage early childhood educators in your community. *Spoiler alert* The Library of Michigan is working with Betsy Diamant-Cohen, a.ka. Mother Goose on the Loose, to create additional, interactive Ready to Read Michigan workshops for families, caregivers, and early childhood educators, coming later this year. The project described was supported by the Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five Initiative (PDG B-5), Grant Number 90TP0002, from the Office of Child Care, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the Office of Child Care, the Administration for Children and Families, or the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NASA @ My Library NaML has a new playlist on YouTube from Cornerstones of Science that feature videos on the facilitations, using a planisphere and more. Feel free to link to those videos at any time! You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvQkYyArNCy1VSAvwgky801E--5-MZ0Z_<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtu…> They also have a STEM Kit resource page up on the website if you choose to create more kits in the future: http://www.starnetlibraries.org/resources/stem-kits/<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starne…> Finally, Star Net is are continuing Our Planet: Earth campaign for Earth Science week in October. Social distancing activities libraries can do, including partnering with GLOBE Observer app for citizen science resources - you can find and link to more information here: http://www.starnetlibraries.org/our-planet-earth/<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starne…> Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) 2021 Manual The "Tails & Tales" 2021 CSLP Manual is now live! However, we have only purchased 1 access code per library, so an email went out last Friday, directly to all library directors, with the code (we will not be snail mailing it this year, only email). If you are the summer library program coordinator at your library, please look for a forwarded message from your director. Once you have the code to access the manual, you will need to create a user account on the CSLP website, if you don't already have one. The account can be for individual, or shared among the library staff in your building, as we have only 1 access code per library. Manuals, graphics and more are available for download, printing, or you can continue to access it online through the library account. Please do not share the manual outside your library. The CSLP 2021 Tails & Tales shop is also now open, until the Library of Michigan re-opens I will not be able to mail out any catalogs, so please browse online: https://www.cslpreads.org/cslp-store/<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpr…>. Artwork this year is done by Salina Yoon. I think you'll be as excited as I am to see the programs & art! This program is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. LM Webinar Escape Rooms from the Ground Up: In-person, outreach, and digital versions<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibraryof…> Tuesday, October 6 2:00 PM ET - Library of Michigan Join us as two escape-room-loving librarians walk you through what you need to have for escape rooms at your library. We'll cover how to build in-person rooms for families and groups, how to take an escape room to schools, and how to build a digital escape room for community engagement.
