"Michigan has the third highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country, and we're still on the upswing. We must continue to do everything we can to slow the spread and protect our families," Ms. Whitmer said in a statement. "Data shows that most Michiganders are doing their part by staying home and staying safe. That's good, but we must keep it up. When we do, we can save lives and shorten the amount of time we're working through this crisis, which will be good for our families and good for our economy in the long-run. We can also protect critical infrastructure workers like doctors, nurses, grocery store employees, and child care workers. Now more than ever, it's crucial that people stay home and stay safe." There are some changes in Executive Order 2020-42<https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/MIEOG/2020/04/09/file_attachmen…> to the original order. Travel for vacations or for any other nonessential purpose is now prohibited. Large stores must also now limit the number of people in the store to four customers for every 1,000 square feet of customer floor space. Smaller stores must limit capacity to 25 percent of the fire code occupancy limit. Stores must also establish markings to regulate entry so that customers are at least six feet apart while waiting. And large stores must close areas dedicated to carpeting, flooring, furniture, garden centers, plant nurseries or paint. Ms. Whitmer will address the situation at a 3 p.m. briefing to be broadcast via the Department of State Police's social media accounts. "This doesn't mean everything will go back to normal on May 1," Ms. Whitmer said. "But based on the data we have right now, this is the appropriate window for an extension. It will take time to safely and responsibly re-open the economy, which is why we will continue to provide critical unemployment support and assistance to our small businesses during this challenging time. Celebrity MeL Minute: MeL eBook Collections from EBSCOhost

[A close up of a sign Description automatically generated]A Celebrity MeL Minute brought to you by Holly Hibner and Mary Kelly of Awful Library Books<http://awfullibrarybooks.net/> Each year, a Catholic school in the neighborhood partners with the library on a social issue report assignment. Our Teen Librarians go to the school to teach students how to use the library's e-resources and how to organize their research. Then the eighth graders come to the library to conduct that research. MeL's e-book collections from EBSCOhost<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=eb…> are a highlight of this instruction. When the eighth graders, strong consumers of electronic media, find out they can access e-books from MeL on their mobile devices, they are surprised, they are relieved, and - I dare say - they are impressed. They can do their homework in their space and their time. Going straight to the middle school e-book collection makes their research on difficult and complicated topics like civil rights, abortion, endangered species, gender identity, etc. age appropriate, authoritative, and relevant to the context of their assignment. When patrons of all ages, with any number of interests and information needs, approach librarians, it goes a long way to be able to recommend a resource like the MeL e-book collections. The content is relevant, and the platform is convenient. I've recommended this resource to businesspeople, travelers, consumers, and many, many more. The MeL e-book collections cover quite a variety of topics. There is truly something for everyone. They are also extremely flexible in how they can be used. MeL's EBSCOhost e-books are downloadable in ePub or PDF format. The PDF version is a fixed layout of the print version of the book, and ePub allows the text to be adjusted easily for any device or screen size. With Adobe Digital Editions (freely downloadable from Adobe.com) e-books are mobile friendly. The ePub format also makes e-books compatible with adaptive technologies, including screen reading software. The table of contents in the e-books links directly to a specific chapter. You can also read the e-book right in your web browser. The e-books can be organized and downloaded to Google Drive - or any other file storage. Passages can be highlighted, shared, notes added, emailed, and printed. For researchers and students, there is an automatic citation generator that can be used in conjunction with popular products like RefWorks, EndNote, or Zotero. For librarians and teachers, integrating these e-book features should be an essential part of instruction. Regardless of your reading and research interests, these extra features make staying organized easier and can help you stay focused on your project. Hello! The CARE Act included money for local governments and this money is being distributed through the states. The bulk of the funds are for local governments with populations above 500,000 people. It is currently unclear how many local governments in Michigan will be able to access funds, and what that process will look like. One way Michigan libraries can get their voices heard on this program and others as entities that need assistance is through contacts with state and local government leaders. Peter Pearson is a Founder/Senior Consultant for Library Strategies Consulting Group. He was president of the Friends of the Saint Paul (Minn.) Public Library for 25 years. As president of the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, he led three capital campaigns and coordinated an annual grassroots advocacy campaign that added millions of dollars of public funding to the library's budget. He also served as a Trustee for the Twin Cities Regional Library System for 10 years. Libby Post is a political consultant who uses her advocacy, marketing, and strategic communication skills to help libraries wage successful funding campaigns. She authored the five-part Library Campaign Training Institute. She serves on the United for Libraries Board and is a member of ALA's Committee on Library Advocacy. She was a trainer for United for Libraries' Neal-Schuman Citizens Save Libraries program. In her home state of New York, she has shepherded her library clients to voter victory with a win margin of 84%. Megan Murray Cusick is the Assistant Director for State Advocacy in ALA's Public Policy and Advocacy office. She assists the advocacy efforts of librarians, library staff and advocates across the country, in cooperation with other ALA offices, as well as state chapters and affiliates. She has also provided support to the Center for the Future of Libraries by identifying the work of libraries that intersects with broader social trends. Prior to joining ALA in 2015, Megan was a high school librarian and co-founder of Chi School Librarians. Sonja Plummer Eyler serves as the Librarian for the City of Presque Isle at the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library. Sonja received a Bachelor of Science in Library Information Technology in 2003 and a Master of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina in 2007. As a past President for the Association for Rural & Small Libraries and President for the Maine Library Association, she is aware of the uniqueness of rural and remote libraries and the organizations supporting them. Sonja lives with a husband, daughter, 12 horses, and 2 dogs in Presque Isle, Maine. Deborah Doyle, MLIS, is chair of the United for Libraries Legislative Committee. She currently serves as vice chair of the Sonoma County Public Library Commission and president of California Public Library Advocates.
