Job Closing Soon: Library Director - Orion Township Public Library (MI)
by Beth Barker 17 Sep '21

17 Sep '21

Library Director - Orion Township Public Library (MI) As the Orion Township Public Library continues to welcome its patrons both in person and virtually, the Library welcomes a new Library Director-one who will continue the Library's strong trajectory of service to its community. Working with 44 staff members and a $2.5 million annual budget, the six-member Board of Trustees, representing 39,500 residents, is interested in the candidate who is committed to serving both the Library's patrons and the community. Contributing to the Township of Orion, actively participating professionally for the betterment of Orion, supporting the Library's commitment to children and young adults, and supporting the Library's mission, "to be known for more than books," are key attributes of the next successful Library Director. Ongoing initiatives include a focus on technology innovations for improved service, expanding external partnerships, and developing and implementing a branding/marketing program resulting in increased outreach to the community. Orion Township, "where living is a vacation," was established in 1835 as a popular destination along the Detroit United Railway for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Detroit-a short 48- minute drive. 184 years later, Orion Township is a thriving community in Northern Oakland County (MI). The Township includes the Village of Lake Orion and is a neighbor to Independence Township, Oxford Township, Oakland Township, and the City of Auburn Hills. At 36 square miles, Orion Township is a slice of the best of Michigan's lakes, parks, highly rated schools, and communities - boasting more than 4,200 acres of parks and open spaces, including 42 lakes larger than five acres, more than 10 square miles of recreation, and more than 50 miles of paths and trail ways-earning the designation, "A Pure Michigan Trail Town." Living in Orion Township offers a quality suburban lifestyle with local cultural activities, restaurants, coffee shops, and outdoor recreation opportunities. There is something to appeal to everyone! Responsibilities: Under administrative supervision and policy direction from the Library Board of Trustees, the Director manages and directs all operational and professional activities of the public library. This includes, but is not limited to, preparing and administering operating and capital budgets, overseeing personnel administration, directing the development of the library collection, overseeing the delivery of library services, and recommending policy and financial considerations to the Library Board. The Library Director models exceptional service expectations and supports staff in achieving those standards of service. Qualifications: The minimum qualifications are the ability to obtain or currently have a Level 1 Professional Library Certification (an ALA-accredited master's degree in library science and four years of full-time employment or an equivalent time period of paid professional library work experience following the completion of educational requirements) through the Library of Michigan and three years supervisory experience in a public library. Preferred qualifications include strong interpersonal communication skills, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, a thorough knowledge of library administration "best practices," knowledge and support of innovative library technologies, experience in budgeting and finance, facilities management, and demonstrated ability to lead and mentor staff. Levy experience, experience reporting to a governing board, and additional courses in public administration or business are desirable. Compensation: The hiring salary range is $75,000 - $97,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package. With Jim Gill<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibraryof…> Thursday, October 7, 2021 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET Music Play to promote readiness, literacy, math development, and inclusion. This lively session incorporates Jim Gill's<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jimgi…> most recent songs as well as in-depth discussion connecting music play with school readiness, literacy development and early math development. Librarians leave the session inspired to share a new repertoire of songs and playful literacy activities with the children they care for. Even more, they will leave the session understanding that what is most challenging about working in early childhood is also what makes the profession so exciting. When we define our teaching as helping children learn, we not only provide joyous challenges for the children. We also keep ourselves engaged and rejuvenated by watching their excitement as they learn. This workshop will connect with the 5 practices of Ready to Read Michigan. Jim Gill<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jimgi…> is a musician and author with unique credentials among children's artists. Jim is a child development specialist, having completed his graduate studies in child development at the Erikson Institute of Chicago with a special emphasis on the study of play. For this reason, each of Jim's recordings and books is created as an opportunity for playful interactions between a child and a caring adult. Jim speaks to early childhood educators, care providers and children's librarians across the country about the many benefits of play in young children's lives. Jim has shared his expertise on music, play and literacy with organizations such as Head Start, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the National Association for Family Child Care and, most recently, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Making Space for Active Learning in Your Library <https://learn.webjunction.org/course/index.php?categoryid=54&utm_source=SFM…> This self-paced learning experience to guide your library through the process of rethinking and reconfiguring physical space to make room for active learning and work with your community to create new services and programs. These courses originated with the Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces<https://www.webjunction.org/explore-topics/smart-spaces.html> project, which guided 15 small libraries from around the country through this process of transformation in their spaces and services. The participating libraries ranged in size of population served from 570 to just over 16,000. Examples of these libraries' successful application of the process are included in all three courses. Although the project was specifically designed to be actionable by small and rural libraries, the process can apply to any library type or size. The program is presented in a three-course sequence: 1. Active Learning and Community Discovery introduces the concepts of active learning and placemaking, and the tools and process for community discovery. 2. From Discovery to Design builds on the results of the community discovery process, adapting design thinking approaches to arrive at an actionable idea and a space ready for transformation. 3. Action Planning and Implementation takes the planning through the steps of making the space and service transformation happen. Participants will receive a WebJunction Certificate of Completion for each course they complete. These courses were developed as part of the Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces project, with funding from OCLC and a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), project #LG-80-16-0039-16.
