Fine Free Discussion and Resources
by White, Shannon (MDE) 16 Sep '21

16 Sep '21

Over the past few years several libraries have moved to eliminate the use of fines for overdue materials. You can find a map on the Urban Libraries Council site of libraries that have gone fine free https://www.urbanlibraries.org/resources/fine-free-map as well as one here https://endlibraryfines.info/fine-free-library-map/ If you are discussing the topic at your library you may want to take a look at this information from the Ontario Library Association that was noted in the recent American Libraries Direct email. They provide a template you can use to calculate the hidden costs of fines as well as an infographic you can customize for your library to assist in discussions with staff and board. Calculating the hidden costs of collecting fines<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fala-publis…> "Library fines were previously considered a deterrent to late returns, damage, or loss of items. However, fines can also be a significant barrier which prevents users from accessing the resources of a public library and doesn't necessarily act as the intended deterrent. The Ontario Library Association has created a customizable infographic template to calculate the hidden costs of fines-such as staff time, processing, and postage for overdue notices-to help libraries decide and persuade their boards...." Program Recommendation
by Katie Rothley 15 Sep '21

15 Sep '21

Hi Michlib-L, I hosted Stephanie Seferian tonight via Zoom on Sustainable Minimalism (The 5 Pillars of Responsible Decluttering) and she was professional and wonderful. Funny, informative, relatable and answered everyone's questions with understanding, patience and plenty of suggestions. We had 28 people register and 22 attended, so I think that's pretty great. She does charge a fee and she doesn't live in Michigan (she lives in New England). Everyone enjoyed the talk. Here is her contact info for anyone interested: Stephanie Seferian <mamaminimalistboston(a)gmail.com> Have a great night!
