Wilder

Boozhoo (hello), Michigan library community, I wanted to share some information about Wilder and her Little House books that not everyone may be thinking about. In my role serving as the Tribal Librarian for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, I have had the opportunity to study and think about this issue in depth and humbly share this with you. The content of Wilder's works is actively harmful, not just to Native readers whose ancestors are supposedly portrayed in them, but to everyone who reads them and takes in those damaging depictions. They portray a vision of history as seen from a settler colonialist perspective that did not allow any room for the humanity of people who were not white settlers (in addition to the inaccurate depictions of Indigenous peoples, there is also anti-Black content). Many of us working in libraries may have fond memories of reading or having these books read to us when we were kids, but it is possible to separate those memories from the harmful content that accompanied them - to make a different choice when recommending books to today's young readers. My suggestion here is that we choose to celebrate writers and books that include everyone's humanity, and chose not to celebrate those which do not. There is quite a lot of writing out there about the damage that Wilder's books do. Please contact me off-list if you'd like me to provide suggestions. I agree Miranda, but we must remember ALL LAND on this beautiful Earth is occupied land. Settled, lost, stolen, fought over, bought, sold, repurposed, demolished, taken over, regrown. Unfortunately, that has been happening for centuries. Just look historically at all the countries around the world that have changed hands and changed who has occupied those lands. ALL in the name of colonization, and growth. Again, points for discussion while reading Wilder. Amber From: Miranda Cauchi <mcauchi(a)wayne.lib.mi.us> Sent: Tuesday, September 14, 2021 1:44 PM To: Amber Alexander <director(a)pidl.org> Subject: Re: [Michlib-l] Wilder _/**/ Just a reminder, "Agree to disagree" isn’t a valid stance when one of those opinions is about dehumanizing large groups of people. As Journey said, we should always defer to the people who are directly harmed by offensive representation in our collections. A person’s lived experience will always outweigh any education that those outside of that community may pursue, especially considering that that lived experience also greatly influences their marginalization within our profession. And Lori, your statement “Actually, Wilder wrote about Native Americans in a good light,” is one I have yet to see proven. And considering that Native and Indigenous people are saying otherwise, we should be more likely to believe them in general, but also doubly so when you choose to disagree without any sources. And Amber, we can talk about some more historical context: Those of us who are not Native or Indigenous are community members on occupied land. The writers who portray Native people negatively are propagandizing whether they know it or not. We can – and should – look at these other representations that you’ve listed critically, but we owe a much greater debt to our Native and Indigenous peers. -Miranda _____ From: "Amber Alexander via Michlib-l" <michlib-l(a)mcls.org <mailto:michlib-l@mcls.org> > To: michlib-l(a)mcls.org <mailto:michlib-l@mcls.org> Sent: Tuesday, September 14, 2021 1:23:22 PM Subject: Re: [Michlib-l] Wilder Let us put it into historical context: 1. This is an opportunity to educate and teach children about the perspectives of the historical timeframe that the person lived in, explain why that is not acceptable in today’s world. 2. Wilder is a first person account, that is a fact. Taking today’s writings about that historical era is not first person account. 3. We know that history has portrayed other groups as uncivilized or unintelligent or murders. Let us look further into that. The monks of Western Europe portrayed the Vikings as “barbarians” and “uncivilized” but we now know that they had a very highly civilized structure, where women could hold seats of power, fought alongside their brothers and fathers and could divorce. We know Vikings were early explorers and also very agricultural. Does that mean we just do away with the monks history and writings? 4. Greek and Roman historical writers always portrayed the Celts and other Germanic peoples in the same light “uncivilized barbarians” who were dirty and unkempt. However, we know that both groups had very cultural and artistic societies with their own laws and hierarchy. Yet, we still today rely on and read these writings into today’s colleges/universities. Basic humanities courses still teach these early authors. They are some of our firsthand accounts (even though we know what say is only that persons perspective of that other culture). 5. Also, archaeologically, we know that early archaeologists (most especially during the Victorian era) suppressed and ultimately shamed other archeologists in the field who were making ground breaking finds on so many cultural societies but since that didn’t fit into the stereotype of the time, those archaeologist work were thrown to the wind. So much data and relics, lost, because it didn’t conform to the standards. History is finally bringing those shamed and on the fringe archaeologist to the light and so much new information has come about because of an open mind. 6. Imagine if the Nazi’s did win, what would Anne Frank’s diary look like today….her book wouldn’t exist, and if it did, what would it be labeled as? We have to educate our children, not only about our history, but why it was wrong then, and what we need to do as a society to move forward. If we just make these books and first person accounts disappear, we are only starting at the beginning again. Searching for Laura Ingalls Wilder books (nice copies)
by Lorry Traver 14 Sep '21

14 Sep '21

Hi all, I am searching for 30 copies of various Laura Ingalls Wilder books - it doesn't matter what the title is, as long as the book is in nice, gently used condition. I am sending this far in advance while I plan my 2022 calendar. I plan to use these books in my Happy Birthday kits for Laura Ingalls Wilder (February 7th). Each child who comes in to get this special birthday kit will receive a free Laura Ingalls Wilder book as well. Each month I plan a special birthday kit for a certain author - we just started this month with Curious George (H.A. Rey) on Thursday, so I am not sure how well this program is going yet. If you have any books you're willing to send my way, please let me know and I will send you our ZV code. Thank you so much! -- "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." - Dr. Seuss Lorry Traver Youth Services Coordinator Ruth Hughes Memorial District Library 211 N. Thank you, Anne, for speaking up about this topic. For those interested in this type of historical fiction, the more recent "Prairie Lotus" by Linda Sue Park seemed to be a good alternative to Wilder's books to me (I very much enjoyed it!). However, I admittedly know little and defer to those in marginalized communities represented in these materials--whether accurately or falsely--who certainly know more about the effect these portrayals have. PO Box address
by James B Lenze 14 Sep '21

14 Sep '21

We have a person who wants to get a library card, but has a PO Box for their address on their drivers license. We normally require proof of residency within our community when issuing library cards. This person says they cannot give me anything with a street address "for legal reasons." Although they were vague about what those reasons might be, they left the impression that they are trying to avoid being found by a person with bad intent. Do any libraries make exceptions in cases such as this? If so, do you issue a standard patron card or one with more restrictions (no econtent, shorter expiration,...) Summer Library Program Survey is due Friday...
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 14 Sep '21

14 Sep '21

Please --> forward to those in charge of summer library programming at your library. Thanks! REMINDER: Please complete this summer library program survey<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.goog…> from the Collaborative Summer Library Program - even if you didn't use "Tails and Tales" this year! (even if you didn't use "Tails and Tales" this year, you can just skip CSLP specific questions). CSLP has created a survey so they can better assess the usefulness of the materials offered by the program on a national level to better serve you, the CSLP membership! (Did you know? All Michigan public libraries are members of CSLP, even if your library opts not to use the slogan/artwork/manual, because LM covers your membership fees on a statewide level using IMLS/LSTA funds.) The survey can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBq6Yof5mW1gGzDeHroUQ7h09MRZ94kEW…<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.goog…> FAQs Who should complete this survey? The audience for the survey is public library staff who played an active role in administering or running 2021 summer library programming. One person per library could fill it out, or multiple library staff from the same library could complete the sections of the survey most relevant to their work; e.g. children, teen, or adult programs. * Please coordinate with your colleagues on who will fill it out, especially if you are in a multi-branch system. * This does NOT need to be filled out by Directors. (Adult/YA/Children program overseers can complete their own portions.) * EVEN IF YOU DID NOT USE "TAILS and TALES" AS YOUR THEME, we invite you to complete the survey! Is this survey required? No, it is not required, but we would appreciate your input. Every library that responds helps us get a more accurate picture of overall satisfaction with the program. I want to be prepared. What info will I need to provide? * General feedback on using (or not) the 2021 program theme and materials; * (Optional) 2023 "All Together Now," and 2024 Adventure theme feedback; * Feedback and info about how/whether you tracked participation, as well as stats for participation and programming for children (ages 0-11), teens (12-18) and adults. You may skip any questions for which you don't have the answers. I suggest you wait until your summer program has ended to complete the survey. When does the survey close? The survey is open from now until Friday, September 17, 2021. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you in advance for sharing your input! This program is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W. Hello all, We used to get our barcodes from Verso (our circ system), but apparently they don't supply them anymore and said I had to find my own, but they didn't have recommendations. I need help and figured I'd ask where you all get your barcode labels.
