Thinking of Digitizing Your Yearbooks?
by Gallo, Biz (MDE) 10 Sep '21

10 Sep '21

Thinking of digitizing your yearbooks? This article addresses issues of copyright, FERPA, COPPA, and the Right to Be Forgotten, as well as includes recommendations for archivists and librarians undertaking similar digitization projects. The Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies (JCAS) announces the publication of volume 8, article 14, "Digitize Your Yearbooks: Creating Digital Access While Considering Student Privacy and Other Legal Issues," written by April K. Anderson-Zorn and Dallas Long. Download the article: elischolar.library.yale.edu/jcas/vol8/iss1/14<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Felischola…> Abstract: Student yearbooks are distinctive cultural records. For the schools and universities that produced them, yearbooks promoted a shared sense of identity and experience among students and helped create enduring loyalty to the institutions long after the students graduated. For scholars and other users, yearbooks are unique primary sources that provide insight into past eras of local student life and culture. In regards to user engagement and preserving local histories, student yearbooks should be ideal candidates for digitization by libraries and archives. However, yearbooks are challenging digitization projects because they are likely to contain privacy-sensitive photographs and other information as well as potentially copyrighted content created by multiple parties. An understanding of state and federal privacy laws, such as FERPA, and the ethical obligations to preserve the privacy of individuals is essential to addressing multi-layered concerns for digital access. The authors offer guidance for yearbook digitization projects based on their investigation of these issues as part of an initiative to digitize their University and K-12 schools' collections of yearbooks. JCAS<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Felischola…> is a peer-reviewed, open access journal sponsored by the Yale University Library, New England Archivists, and Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Youth & Teen Services updates
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 10 Sep '21

10 Sep '21

MDE Early Literacy Update * Michigan released the M-STEP scores on Tuesday, 8/31, and as expected, results were down compared to the 2019 results. Reports released by EPIC broke down the results<https://epicedpolicy.org/michigans-2020-21-benchmark-assessments/>, the students who took the test, and the students being retained. In third grade ELA, the percentage of students considered "proficient" or higher dropped from 45.1% to 42.8%. The declines in scores were most drastic in the most vulnerable student populations, as only 15% of Black third-grade students, only 31% of Hispanic third-grade students, and only 28% of third-grade students who are considered economically disadvantaged scored "proficient" or higher in ELA (compared to 48%of White students). * The percentage of students who took the test ranged by grade from 64% to 72% (72% of third-graders took it), but White students and non-economically disadvantaged students were much more likely to take the test. In Detroit Public Schools, less than 10% of students took the test, but in Forest Hills (near Grand Rapids), 90% of students took the test. * About 5% of third-graders are eligible for retention based on their ELA scores. Black, Hispanic, and students who are economically disadvantaged were much more likely to achieve a score that qualified them for retention than White or Asian students. Considering "Good Cause Exemptions," it's not likely all these students will be retained. Katharine Strunk emphasized that given the low percentage of students who took the test and the wide disparities in who took the test, the number of students who are actually drastically behind in reading is more than the M-STEP indicates. We plan several years in advance, to allow time to contract with quality illustrators. We are currently working on the 2024 slogan and the 2025 theme. (Want a little CSLP Theme/Slogan history? - 30 Years of CSLP History<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpr…>) You can campaign for your favorites or help us see possible issues or challenges to the verbiage and translations. We need your input and will use these sessions time to listen as you share your concerns or as you strive to build support for your favorite proposed 2024 slogans and 2025 themes. These 2024 slogan suggestions came from state reps and CSLP membership from across the nation and have been vetted by CSLP's attorney for possible IP/copyright conflicts. There are nine strong candidates remaining after removing those with potential risk or conflict. Your input may influence the final vote by the state reps at the CSLP Annual Meeting on September 23. These sessions are open to all membership. If you have any insights and would like to help us avoid unfortunate translations in the future please add one of the listening sessions to your calendar. With Jim Gill<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibraryof…> Thursday, October 7, 2021 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET Music Play to promote readiness, literacy, math development, and inclusion. This lively session incorporates Jim Gill's<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jimgi…> most recent songs as well as in-depth discussion connecting music play with school readiness, literacy development and early math development. Librarians leave the session inspired to share a new repertoire of songs and playful literacy activities with the children they care for. Even more, they will leave the session understanding that what is most challenging about working in early childhood is also what makes the profession so exciting. When we define our teaching as helping children learn, we not only provide joyous challenges for the children. We also keep ourselves engaged and rejuvenated by watching their excitement as they learn. This workshop will connect with the 5 practices of Ready to Read Michigan. Jim Gill<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jimgi…> is a musician and author with unique credentials among children's artists. Jim is a child development specialist, having completed his graduate studies in child development at the Erikson Institute of Chicago with a special emphasis on the study of play. For this reason, each of Jim's recordings and books is created as an opportunity for playful interactions between a child and a caring adult. Jim speaks to early childhood educators, care providers and children's librarians across the country about the many benefits of play in young children's lives. Jim has shared his expertise on music, play and literacy with organizations such as Head Start, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the National Association for Family Child Care and, most recently, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Library of Things ideas
by bellairelibrary＠torchlake.com 10 Sep '21

10 Sep '21

Hi, library brain trust! We have come into some money recently and would like to spend it on creating a Library of Things. I am looking for practical ideas, not STEM, etc. as we already have a good STEM collection. I have ordered a mobile projector and a heavy-duty sewing machine but wondered what items others have in a similar collection. I am also gathering input from our patrons and staff, just looking for as many ideas as I can find! Thanks! -- Cindi L. snow melt systems
by Valerie Meyerson 10 Sep '21

10 Sep '21

Hello all - Our snow melt system out front is in need of replacement. We are currently considering three options: 1. Do nothing and hire someone to manually remove snow and put salt down, 2. Replace the current system (hydronic tubes through concrete), 3. ThermaHexx - a pedestal mounted paver/stone system. We have been looking at the pros and cons of each system. And my board thought it would be nice to hear from other libraries that have heated sidewalks (especially libraries "up north" or in the UP with lots of snow!). Our first system failed after about 15 years. We are trying to decide if it's worth the investment for a new system. Thank you for any guidance you may have.
