Backyard Chicken Program
by Deb Biggs Tenbusch 09 Sep '26

09 Sep '26

Hello Amazing Library Programmers! Has anyone--especially in the SE MI area--done a backyard chicken program? If so, do you have a speaker you can recommend? I have contacted the MSU extension here in Oakland County, but am waiting to hear back if they can do that kind of presentation. I also have a practitioner lined up to share her experience, but really need someone to talk about the "mechanics" of it all. Many thanks in advance! SUMMER READING SURVEY NOW OPEN!
by Williams, Barbara (MDE) 09 Sep '26

09 Sep '26

[cid:image001.jpg@01DD1826.CBB62A40] The Collaborative Summer Library Program's (CSLP) annual survey is now open and will close Friday, September 14, 2026. CSLP has created a survey so they can better assess the usefulness of the materials offered by the program on a national level to better serve you, the CSLP membership! All public libraries in Michigan are CSLP members thanks to the Library of Michigan with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The survey can be found here: https://forms.gle/QKN5qduWz9QRV8nf8 If you would like to view the survey in PDF form before completing it, you can find that here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10eiU10iKoV2zapQmWj9HWHVbLfycnPSk/view FAQs Who should complete this survey? The audience for the survey is public library staff who played an active role in administering or running 2026 summer library programming. One person per library could fill it out, or multiple library staff from the same library could complete the sections of the survey most relevant to their work, e.g. children, teen, or adult programs. * Please coordinate with your colleagues on who will fill it out, especially if you are in a multi-branch system. * This does NOT need to be filled out by Directors. (Adult/YA/Children program overseers can complete their own portions.) * EVEN IF YOU DID NOT USE "UNEARTH A STORY" AS YOUR THEME, we invite you to complete the survey! Is this survey required? No, it is not required, but we would appreciate your input. Every library that responds helps us get a more accurate picture of overall satisfaction with the program. I want to be prepared. What info will I need to provide? * General feedback on using (or not) the 2026 program theme and materials; * Feedback and info about how/whether you tracked participation, as well as stats for participation and programming for children (ages 0-11), teens (12-18) and adults. You may skip some questions for which you don't have the answers. I suggest you wait until your summer program has ended to complete the survey. When does the survey close? The survey is open from now until Friday, September 14, 2026. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you in advance for sharing your input! Putting Leveled labels on Easy Reader books
by Rhonda Burns 09 Sep '26

09 Sep '26

We (Leighton Township Library) are considering adding leveled labels to our Easy Reader books. We currently shelve them by author with an Easy Reader sticker but no level number. If your library uses the leveled numbers we would like your input. 1. Do you base the reading level number on Publisher suggestion, Lexile number, Accelerated Reader, other, or a mix of these? 2. Do you also label non-fiction readers? 3. Do you shelve by author or by leveled reader label/author? Thank you, Rhonda Burns Leighton Township Library Circulation Manager

Mobile children's museum exhibits
by Katrina Rogers 09 Sep '26

09 Sep '26

Hi, I'm considering purchasing some children's museum exhibits, but they need to be mobile (on wheels or small enough to pack up fairly quickly and easily). Are there any libraries that have something similar? If so, where did you purchase them? by Ryan Deery 09 Sep '26

09 Sep '26

The Northland Library Cooperative is honored to commemorate the retirement of current Director Linda Adams and celebrate hiring Stacy Pasche, current Director of the Benzie Shores District Library as Adams replacement. After serving at the Charlevoix Public Library as Director, Adams spent seven years guiding cooperative services throughout norther lower Michigan. “Linda’s strong leadership, passionate advocacy, and love of libraries benefited every library in the cooperative and she will be greatly missed” noted Northland Board Chair Ryan Deery, current Director of the Charlevoix Public Library. “At the same time, we are excited for our next chapter and specifically for the experience, passion, ideas, and leadership Stacy Pasche will bring to the role” Pasche has served at the Benzie Shores District Library for 17 years, including eight years as library director. During Pasche’s tenure as Director at Benzie Shores, she helped guide the library through a period of growth and innovation, overseeing the library’s expansion and the addition of the Harmony Garden, an outdoor space designed to support early literacy through music. She also strengthened community partnerships, expanded outreach and programming, and led initiatives that increased the library’s visibility and impact throughout the community. “I am excited to carry the lessons and experiences from my career into my new role with the Northland Library Cooperative and to continue supporting the important work of libraries throughout our region” stated Stacy. Nerd Girl Industries Workshops
by Lisa Rabey 08 Sep '26

08 Sep '26

Hello! This may be unorthodox, and even a little bit gauche, but since there have been many requests (or accolades) for workshops on this list, I am throwing my hat in the ring for consideration at your libraries as I've already had several directors reach out after my promo email about my upcoming events at KDL posted over the weekend. My bona fides: As most of you know, I'm a librarian as well as a writer, researcher, and other job titles. I have my MLIS from Wayne State. My side hustle, Nerd Girl Industries, presents workshops and webinars on various topics from research to social media. (As well as services and packages but that may not be applicable for the list.) You can find out more about NGI at https://nerdgirl.net and workshops at https://nerdgirl.net/workshops. I've also got a guest column at BookLife and I'm on track to write for Public Library magazine in 2027. In addition to upcoming KDL, I've taught my workshops from individuals to large groups both in-person and virtual for various clients and organizations. Accolades are on my landing page of my website. For in person workshops, I charge mileage (at current standard rate of .76/mile) + hotel (if I need to spend the night) + cost of workshop ($200). I live in Traverse City area so if you are in SE MI and are interested in one my in-person workshops, it can get a bit pricey with the mileage factored in. If you're open to virtual, that cost is significantly less ($300). Below is a list of my current workshops. The links take you to the workshop page with a full summary and take aways. Email me here ( academichussy(a)gmail.com) or my side-hustle email (hithere(a)nerdgirl.net) if you have any questions! Thanks! Lisa - Can I Find You?
