Library makers, registration is open! GoLMCon 2026 is happening! The Guild of Library Makers is hosting its second annual conference at Southfield Public Library on Friday, September 18th, 9am to 4pm (doors open at 8am). This is a free, open event for anyone in library work who's curious about makerspaces. Whether you're just starting to wonder if one might fit your library, or you're already running one and have questions, all library staff are welcome. New this year: Travel Stipends Thanks to support from the Library of Michigan, we're offering $50 travel stipends to the first 20 qualifying attendees who apply. To qualify, you must: - Be a current employee of a Michigan library - Be driving more than 50 miles from your home to Southfield Public Library - Not be receiving mileage reimbursement from your library for this trip Here is a map showing the 50-mile driving radius from Southfield Public Library: [image: 50drivingmiles.png] Applying for a stipend is separate from registration. Free access to Dow Gardens - with a Library Card

Hello Library Land- Dow Gardens in Midland announced yesterday that they are hosting "Library Card Nights" during the summer. Residents of Michigan with a Library card can get free access to the gardens. Every person wanting to enter for free must have a library card unless they are under the age of 3. The first night is tonight, but they have another date in July and one in August. Please feel free to share and repost on your social media and notify your patrons. They also have a really fun exhibit that fits with the summer reading theme called "Dinosaurs of the World". [Apologies for cross-posting] Dear colleagues: The ALA Core SAC Working Group on $v Retention is sharing two open letters to the Library of Congress. Details and links to the open letters are below. We invite anyone who shares our concerns to sign one or both letters, as an individual and/or on behalf of an organization. You can also use the form to endorse the recommendations of the Working Group, if desired. Open letter about further alterations to Library of Congress Subject Headings <https://docs.google.com/document/d/18R2WMf9qAj5twyH6ue9BD4nnpoI7XQs7gCIvwzf…> In January 2026, the Library of Congress (LC) announced with a month’s notice that it would cease adding form subdivisions to new cataloging records, leaving many libraries scrambling to adjust. Since LC has intimated that more shifts are on the way, including possible deletions of documentation and authority records, our open letter requests information regarding LC’s timeline and scope for further changes to Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Open letter about the LCSH modernization discussion group <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KzIdIedSOkUyeQbsj_q8wj1_7ax3qTNY4YCXu3W…> In the April 2026 SACO Office Hours, LC stated that it was “pulling together a discussion group” to look “overall at LCSH modernization,” beginning January 2027 (transcript <https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Jew50X-fSuMGUCMxRUXQqJ2WpbvkUTYS/view>, 55-57 minute mark). Given the assurances that LC “want[s] to hear from others,” and our desire to make sure membership is representative of the broad library community, our open letter requests more information about the timeline, scope and composition of the group. Endorsements of the recommendations of the ALA Core SAC Working Group on $v Retention <https://docs.google.com/document/d/12sYgYhVSyM1nObY-QeH-VySjYHxoSQTEj2xwBFT…> The Working Group will cease activities at the end of July 2026. We are accepting recommendation endorsements until that time; thank you to the organizations and individuals who have already endorsed! Developments on this issue include: the deletion of authority records with form subdivisions from CYAC (children’s subject headings) in February 2026 (approved in April 2026); LC’s suggestion in the February 2026 SAC Midwinter meeting that LCSH authority records with form subdivisions and documentation might be deleted as soon as next year; and the first Summary of Decisions (Feb. 2025, issued in April 2026) rejecting proposals for new form subdivisions. Willard Library in Battle Creek has three exciting author programs coming up. All are welcome! *"Last Seen" with Author and Researcher Dr. Judith Giesberg* *Monday, June 15, 6 p.m.* "Last Seen" is Dr. Judith Giesberg's effort to collect and digitize information from wanted ads placed by formerly enslaved people looking for their loved ones lost in the domestic slave trade. Dr. Giesberg is a professor of history and the Robert M. Birmingham Chair in the Humanities at Villanova University. With this book, she draws on this archive of almost 5,000 letters and advertisements to compile individual and family stories in narrative form for the first time. *When the Declaration of Independence Was News * *Wednesday, June 17, 6 p.m.* Author Emily Sneff will discuss her new book, which chronicles the extraordinarily rapid and wide distribution of the Declaration of Independence, a deliberate and perhaps unprecedented means of a government winning over public opinion and creating a national identity across the thirteen nascent states.
