MeL Minute: MeL's New eResources Learning Academy

[MeL Favicon image]We're excited to share MeL has a new support tool! Our new subscription to Niche Academy allows us to create our very own eResources Learning Academy. Content will include short, bite-size videos on how to use eBooks, research databases and more, and will be created by both the MeL team and Niche Academy. You will also find a mix of transcripts and written instructions with screenshots. Links to MeL's eResources Learning Academy are in two places on MeL.org. 1. In the eResources<https://mel.org/az.php> section, you'll notice certain records now include links to videos. 2. In the Library Staff<https://mel.org/staff> section, at the top of the page, you'll find the full list of available videos. Scroll through the list and select the one you want. The video will appear inside the Niche Academy window on MeL.org<https://mel.org/welcome>. If you'd like to see the video in full screen mode, click on the arrow in the upper right corner of the box. Currently, our eResources Learning Academy includes 6 videos on how to use specific EBSCO databases. Our MeL eBook video will show you how to navigate the ins and outs of reading and downloading eBooks. You'll also find videos from AtoZDatabases.com, World Book and Gale. To support other areas of learning, we've created a couple of videos to help navigate MeL.org. Also, there are 5 "How To Do Research" videos. These short videos may be helpful in a variety of situations. 1. Supporting new staff that need training. 2. Teaching patrons how to use a particular resource, or how to do research. 3. Learning available 24/7 for anyone needing for a quick re-fresh. We hope you find this new learning opportunity helpful! Sad News

It's with a heavy heart that I share with you the passing of Larry Ostrowski, who died peacefully at his home following a long, painful fight with Multiple System Atrophy. Larry was a dedicated Director and a real gentleman Librarian who was always kind and compassionate. During his ten years as the White Lake Library Director, Larry was an active "working" friend of the Library. He was proud of the annual Friends of the Library Mini-golf fundraiser and personally hauled the course to many other libraries for fundraisers. Representing the Library and embracing a life of community service, Larry was happily involved with many causes in White Lake. He was active on the committees which planned and implemented the Community Tree Lighting, Easter Egg Hunt, Pumpkin Hunt, and Fisk Farm Festival. He trained to be a Volunteer Firefighter and attended the Citizens Police Academy, where they marveled at his skills as a marksman. Larry and his wife Margaret were also active members of the Historical Society, Huron Valley Optimist Club, Highland/ White Lake Business Association, and especially Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The funeral will be tomorrow in Toledo with visitation today at the Coyle Funeral Home. Dear library community, Michigan Humanities is looking for 10, six- or eight-foot conference room tables (preferably on casters) as well as 50 office chairs for a training room. We also need three traditional wooden desk sets with drawers. If you know of an organization or local company donating office furniture to a nonprofit, or selling it at a bargain, please let us know. We have been researching options, but know that you may have insight into gently-used office furniture! Thank you! Hello, everyone! We invite everyone to join us for "An Afternoon with Author Joseph Heywood", sponsored by The Friends of the Benzie County Libraries. The event will take place at the Mills Community House, 891 Michigan Ave., Benzonia, MI, on Sunday Nov. 10, 2019 at 4PM. Heywood's bestselling Woods Cop mysteries are based on the lives of Upper Peninsula conservation officers. Heywood is a Vietnam Veteran and former adjunct professor of professional writing at Western Michigan University. This is the author's 20th consecutive year patrolling with local DNR Officers and spends roughly a month each year in the field with the DNR. Refreshments provided. Please post and share! Thank you!
