Greetings! Are you from a small or rural library? Do you have idea or successes you would like to share with your peers? If so, the Library of Michigan would like to invite you to submit a proposal for the 2020 Small & Rural Libraries conference. The call for proposals is open through Monday, October 21. The conference will be held April 13-April 15, 2020 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Michigan. All regions and dates listed below <http://hsmichigan.org/programs/michigan-history-alliance/> The Michigan History AllianceT is a regionalized program that helps our member organizations preserve and promote history by fostering collaboration, sharing information and best practices, and providing training for their staff and volunteers. <http://hsmichigan.org/programs/michigan-history-alliance/#form> Easily register online on our website. Each regional alliance meets to bring together representatives from HSM member historical organizations in several counties. The Alliance meetings take place in the morning and consist of a networking session and a featured speaker. The speaker will offer insights on a topic of concern or opportunity, and the networking and collaboration portion allows for conversations among a region's historical organizations. Attendance at a Michigan History Alliance meeting is FREE of charge for current member organizations of HSM. Since the Alliance is a benefit for HSM member organizations, membership is required for participation. Attendees must represent a member historical organization in order to attend the Alliance meeting in the morning. The afternoon workshops are open to ALL! There is a fee to attend the History Skills Workshops. To further the educational experience of the Alliance meetings, a separate three-hour History Skills Workshop will be offered in the afternoon. Taught by authorities in the field, the History Skills Workshops provide in-depth training on such topics as exhibit design, collections management, fundraising, and websites. There is a fee to attend the History Skills Workshops, which are open to members and nonmembers alike. Reminder: Young Authors' Festival for kids in grades 3-5

Hello all, This is a reminder that our Writing Contest for Michigan kids in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades is still accepting submissions until THIS FRIDAY, October 11th (encourage kids to send in their entries!) and that registration for the FREE half-day festival will open online on October 14th. *Many of you have already helped us to spread the word about the Young Authors' Festival and its writing contest to kids, parents, and teachers in southeast Michigan, but we need some help for one more push ahead of some important dates!* [image: YAF_Logo_noyear.jpg] This year will mark the 7th annual Young Authors' Festival at the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Mardigian Library. The festival is completely FREE and open to students in grades 3-5, their families, and their teachers. We feature an author visit and fun writing breakout sessions led by our pre-service education students, while parents and teachers learn literacy strategies. Presenter Recommendation: Amanda Bulgarelli of Positive Approach to Care

This past weekend, the Howell Carnegie District Library had the second of 2 seminars on dementia awareness led by Amanda Bulgarelli of Positive Approach to Care <https://teepasnow.com/>. Both seminars were well attended, with Amanda speaking about "Normal Aging vs. Not-Normal Aging" at the first one in September, and "What is Dementia?" at the second. The audience feedback was terrific for both and the staff, who sat in for each program, were impressed too. She had the audience voluntarily interacting: responding to questions, partaking in short role-play scenarios, and even singing along to a mnemonic device for how to treat people with dementia. Amanda was an excellent speaker, gave relevant and important information related to dementia, and was so easy to work with--no-hassle booking, great communication, and reasonable presenter fee. She also has other dementia-related presentations, so she's more than likely got a program appropriate for any library. We'd like to give a shout-out to TLN, since we discovered Amanda at the TLN's Adult Services Presenters Showcase last December.
