Parchment Community Library Invites You to a Special Program November 4, 2015, 6:30 pm, at the Parchment Community Library “A Thousand Letters Home” Author Teresa Irish Presents “The Journey of the Letters” Teresa Irish presents the entertaining, inspirational and life-affirming story of The Journey of the Letters. After the 2006 death of her father, Bud, recipient of the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and two Bronze Stars, Teresa found the 1,000 letters he wrote home from WWII and 250 corresponding photographs. Visited only by him over the course of six decades, the letters were postmarked from Nov 1942 to Dec 1945. The fragile, yellowed pages were written to Bud’s parents, and to the sweetheart who would later become his wife. These treasures are the basis for the book A Thousand Letters Home. From lonesome, moonlit nights listening to the Hit Parade, to the foxholes and front lines in Germany, to correspondence with the heartbroken mothers whose sons died by his side, this is a historic story of life & loss, hope & perseverance, unwavering faith & true love. The program is a heartfelt journey back in time, a tribute to our country’s history, freedoms and family values, and a call to citizenship in today’s world. Irish’s storytelling, accompanied by 1940’s photographs and music, has audiences laughing, crying, and reminiscing. This program reaches across generations with a little something for everyone. MeL Minute - Digital Literacy

Hello all, At the 2015 Michigan Broadband Conference<http://www.connectmi.org/broadband-summit> held in Lansing, October 20, the topic of connectivity and access was widely explored in breakout sessions and conversations among attendees. One common thread throughout was the role libraries can and do play in these efforts. To that end, included in MeL is the Books & Literacy Gateway<http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=841> with a specific classification for Digital Literacy<http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=1055> resources. Here you can find links for self-directed tutorials, tools for teaching, and how to stay safe online. Not an exhaustive list but some solid starters. Among them is DigitalLearn.org<http://digitallearn.org/> a site from the Public Library Association funded by an IMLS grant which aims "...to create an online hub for digital literacy support and training." Director, Knowledge Curation & Innovation Transform, Transcend, & Deliver new models of information curation, delivery and access as Westport Library <http://westportlibrary.org/> s Director, Knowledge Curation & Innovation. The Director, Knowledge Curation & Innovation will support traditional library adult and teen collections, reference, and readers advisory while growing new service models, fostering content development, and delivering new approaches to collections, information, and outreach services. He/she will work with a team of professionals across the Library to oversee the selection of digital resources, books and other learning tools. Designing and implementing new approaches to building collections, information delivery, and content creation is vital to the position. The Director, Knowledge Curation & Innovation, must have a respect for the past and the ability to see the future of library collections and services. With a strong love of information gathering and sharing, this valued Library team member will strategically develop new ways of content access and delivery. A customer service focus-both internally and externally-is essential. This position contributes to short and long-range planning, program development, and evaluation, and provides input into allocation of resources in support of the Librarys collections and services. The Westport Library is a vibrant and welcoming community hub that reflects Westports spirit, creativity and entrepreneurship. Each day, an average of 1,300 patrons of all ages visit the Library to read and research (borrowing nearly 674,000 items last year), attend one of the Librarys 1,600 programs, consult with the Librarys expert reference librarians, use one of the Librarys ten 3-D printers, shop the Library store, meet friends at the Library Café or simply enjoy the camaraderie of being in a dynamic shared space. In 2013, the Library Journal designated the Westport Library as a Five-Star Library, a distinction earned by less than 1% of the nations libraries and in 2015 the Library was one of five finalists for the IMLS National Medal for Museum and Library Services. The Westport Library was also among the first in the nation to establish a Maker Space, a place for creation, collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship. The Library is supported by a $4.3 million annual Town appropriation and supplemented by an active development effort, as well as grants, fees and earned income, resulting in a $5.6 million annual operating budget. Wilsonstak Hinged Periodical Display fronts free to a good home

We have Wilsonstak shelving that came with hinged Periodical Display fronts (brown in color). We have use for only a handful of the Periodical Display fronts that came with the shelving. If you have this type of shelving and have a use for hinged Periodical Display fronts (along with the brackets to attach them to your shelving), contact me off list and tell me how many you would like. We probably have about 200 of them that need to find a new home. You can take all or part of what we have. You would just need to arrange for pick-up of these fronts. Hunting Knives in the Library

Hi All, I'm searching the Michigan Penal Code for information on carrying knives in public. Specifically, a patron entered the library with openly displayed hunting knives on his belt. Our policy forbids knives, but I was hoping to find a legal reason to forbid them as well. The only sections that seem to deal with knives are 750.226a and 750.227.
