Seeking host libraries for Summer 2016 makerspace workshops {deadline 11/15}

Hello! The University of Michigan has received funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to *bring maker education* to all areas of Michigan for libraries, community groups, educators, civic leaders, and more. We're* seeking 8 host sites* around Michigan (we'll host a 9th in Ann Arbor) to help us recruit and host these three-day events in Summer 2016 (with more workshops coming in 2017). *2016 host libraries receive:* - a public maker event organized by U-M project staff - a $500 stipend We are especially eager to work with* libraries in rural areas* and would love to find *two sites in the UP*. If your library itself lacks meeting space, but you have a community partner (like a local school) who could host the events, that's fine. Having done maker education work around the U.S. and in China, Australia, and Italy, we're excited about being right here in our Michigan home, helping libraries and their communities think about how making can help spurn creative thinking, innovation, or just delight. Provides readers advisory and contributes to library website. Indirect public service: Ability to work successfully in a program-oriented team environment; keeps statistics for reporting; uses current technologies for communication; assists with department services; participates in the selection, development and evaluation of youth print, non-print and electronic resources; prepares bibliographies, guides, displays, and assists with website and library social media. Policy: assists in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures. Professional development: participates in professional organizations; seeks opportunities for professional growth and development. REQUIREMENTS: Minimum: ALA-accredited Masters in Library Science; experience working with children; a high level of energy and self -motivation to create, publicize and conduct new programs; develop and conduct outreach programs in the community; familiarity with Windows-based computers; knowledge of internet and database searching; flexible with scheduling; Able to lift, push, and/or pull at least 20 pounds; able to visually review materials and discern voice and audible tones. Desire to serve the public, and specifically children, in a positive, energetic manner. Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills to work effectively with staff, volunteers and library users in a team environment, Desirable: Public library work experience; successful experience presenting developmentally appropriate programs for young people; experience with selection and budgeting material for children. MeL Minute - Databases Training

Just when I think I've become somewhat familiar with the features of the MeL databases, http://mel.org/Databases, I attend a training session presented by a specific provider and realize there's so much more available than I knew about or enhancements that have been added. Fortunately, the vendors are always working to help libraries, students and educators stay informed. They do this in a variety of ways but the one that has proven successful is by offering webinars. Presented live and then available recorded, the webinars can be viewed at your convenience and as often as needed. Having said this, below are links to some current offerings for two very popular databases, HeritageQuest Online and Britannica School. Information about these and similar training opportunities are always announced on the various Michigan library listservs. This is an ongoing process so stay tuned for announcements of more offerings as they are made available. Adult Cards

Good Evening, I have a situation that I am hoping to get everyone's input on. We have a mentally disabled adult patron who has a Library card and frequently comes in alone. She is not responsible for herself, but her parents are elderly and do not accompany her. This has lead to a problem in the last couple of months as she has accrued fines on her account for late materials. While she has no problem paying the fines, her parents have been calling to argue about how she shouldn't have to pay since they didn't know she had late materials. Since she is over 18, based on our policy she is able to get a card without her guardians signature. I would like to make it mandatory that if you are not responsible for yourself, regardless of your age, that you still have to have a parent or guardian sign the application; I'm just not sure how to go about requiring this. Stories will be based on primary sources about Parks from the collections of The Henry Ford, including the very bus where she made her historic stand.
