Hi Everyone, AWE Digital Learning Solutions is offering a discount opportunity from October 1 through November 15, 2013 for all public libraries in the State of Michigan. Please see the attached document for pricing and further details. Further discounts are applied as more orders are received. For instance, if 1-9 orders are received from public libraries throughout the State, the price for 1-9 units applies. If 10 or more orders are received then, there's an additional discount and so on. Library cards scanned into phones

Collective Wisdom, Do you accept library cards scanned into a phone to check materials out from your library? If so, do you require additional ID or do you have a library ap to use with the scanned card? What are the pros and cons of accepting or rejecting scanned library cards? Currently we only accept a library card or personal ID (such as a driver's license or student ID) for checking out materials. We have not accepted scanned library cards, but are considering it. I have followed arguments for and against, and am wondering how common the acceptance of scanned cards is in Michigan. Thank you for your input! From the Library Grants blog. >>>>>>>>>>> Deadline: October 1, 2013 As part of its going commitment to rural communities across the country, the Foundation for Rural Service provides annual grants for communities served by NTCA members. The goal of this program is to support local efforts to build and sustain a high quality of life in rural America. Grants will be concentrated in four major areas: * Business Development * Community Development * Education * Telecommunications Grants can range from $250 to $5000 that go back in to rural communities, every year. FRS grants will allow rural communities to take that first step towards a project or plan that can help better the lives of those around them - whether it is smart boards in schools, a Main Street beautification project, better agricultural equipment for farms, start-up money for young entrepreneurs, or basic computer classes. These funds help rural Americans invest in their communities in meaningful ways. The Foundation will give priority to proposals that foster collaboration among different community agencies, and local government, reflect a comprehensive approach to community development, promote community participation and engagement, and make rural communities a better place to live and work. The St. Ignace Public Library is accepting applications for the position of Library Director. This position oversees the operation and budget of the St. Ignace Public Library. Email resumes will not be accepted. One year library work experience required. College degree required. Library Science degree preferred, along with strong customer service and computer skills. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience and education. Application Deadline: October 1, 2013 The City of St. Ignace is an equal opportunity employer. General Summary: The Library Director is responsible for managing the operations and budget of the St. Ignace Public Library. The position is 40 hours per week. Experience: One year of library work experience required. Education: College degree required. Library Science degree preferred. Performance Requirements: . Works under the direction of the Library Board and will receive an annual evaluation. . Possess effective communication skills. . Working knowledge of library policies and procedures, ability to use computers and the library computer system, and knowledge of library loan system. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: . Managerial: Train and supervise staff and volunteers; manage all library programs; manage and maintain the library collection and supplies; coordinate library loan; coordinate fund raising efforts; attend all board meetings as well as assembling the Board agenda and minutes; and assisting the Board in their deliberations. . Customer Service: Assist and interact tactfully and courteously with diverse group of patrons, provide for their needs in a timely manner, and maintain confidentiality. . Collection management: Select, order, catalog, and process new titles; pursue the return of overdue items and/or replacement value; remove outdated and damaged items; and manage genealogical materials. . Technology: Provide computer assistance to patrons and monitor their use of computers; perform routine maintenance of equipment and coordinate with tech support as needed. Keep current with changing technologies. . Public Relations: Publicize library events; maintain good community relationships. . Financial: Manage payroll, prepare bills for board meetings, prepare annual budget for board approval, administer the approved budget, submit annual state aid report, do a monthly revenue deposit, and submit the transmittal slip to the city clerk. . Professional: Attend educational workshops; keep library policies updated with approval of the Board. . Building and Equipment Maintenance: Ensure the building and equipment is properly maintained; coordinate janitorial services. . Community Room: Responsible for scheduling use of room; also for opening and closing when the room is used outside of library hours. . Perform other duties as assigned. Physical Demands: . Must be able to re-shelve books on high and low shelves. . Must be able to lift and/or move at least 20 pounds. . Must be able to shovel snow and take out garbage.

Letters about Literature program judges wanted

The Library of Michigan is looking for judges for the Letters about Literature program. People familiar with English language arts education, young adult literature, and literary programming for grades 4-12 are welcome. Judging includes reading approximately 50 letters sometime in February or March and one meeting to discuss which letters should be the winner and finalists. Meeting attendance in person is encouraged, but conference call attendance is okay. If you are interested, please contact me and let me know if you are interested in Level I (grades 4-6), Level II (grades 7-8), or Level III (grades 9-12). We are again hosting this national program for Michigan. The Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program is a national program from the Library of Congress. It is reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. We have sent a letter and a sample entry form to libraries and schools. The 2014 letters will be due in two waves, which is new this year. Level III entries (grades (9-12) have a deadline of December 10, 2013 and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 10, 2014. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2014.
