Submit Your Proposal for the 2014 Rural Library Conference

It is time to begin thinking about the 2014 Rural Libraries Conference. The event will be held April 30-May 2, 2014 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. The Library of Michigan and the Rural Libraries Conference Program Committee encourage you to submit a proposal for the conference. Submit your proposal here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RLC2014 The Rural Libraries Conference has a long tradition of providing a forum for the staff, trustees, and advocates of Michigan's small and rural libraries to share, learn and be inspired to provide the best library service to their communities. The 2014 RLC theme is Partnerships, People, Progress. Let's come together as a community to share our collective knowledge of imaginative, resourceful and successful library practices. How can you contribute? Bring your tried and true as well as your new and inventive practices to share with your Michigan library colleagues. If it's working well for you, chances are good that others could benefit from hearing about it. We will be showcasing up to 50 presentations at the 2014 conference. The RLC Program Committee invites you to consider the following conference tracks as you design your program proposal: * Library Technology or Digital Literacy * Services to Individual Populations (youth, seniors, unemployed, entrepreneurs, etc.) * Library Programming * Engagement, Collaboration & Partnerships * Administration and Management Presenters will be required to provide an electronic copy of session materials by April 1, 2014 that will be on a flash drive to all conference attendees. The Library of Michigan will provide all presenters with one conference registration and one night's lodging at the Grand Hotel (or other hotel accommodation up to the state rate of $75 per night) per day of presenting. Program selection is a peer-reviewed process. The RLC Program Committee will evaluate the content of your proposal for relevance to the conference tracks, clarity, originality, and timeliness. The experience and qualifications of presenter(s) will also be considered. Proposals are due Monday, October 21, 2013 in order to be considered for inclusion in the 2014 conference. Please note that proposals with significant incomplete information will not be considered. The contact person for the proposal will be notified of the status of that proposal by the end of December 2013. October 24 Broadband Conference - library staff register at no cost

On Thursday, October 24th, 2013, Connect Michigan and the Library of Michigan will host the 2013 Michigan Broadband Conference to bring together community and economic development professionals, local government officials and staff, libraries, educators, technology providers, and many others to collaborate and share best practices for expanding broadband and technology access, adoption, and use in communities across the state. The conference will be held at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan from 9AM to 5PM. ***Library staff can register for free! Detroit Jazz Artist Available for Free Jazz Concerts and Educational Programming at Libraries this Fall

This message is sent out on behalf of Detroit jazz artist RJ Spangler. Please see below for more information. --message-- The RJ Spangler Trio has a performance grant that allows us to play free concerts for schools, non-profits, libraries, etc. We have openings in September, October, November & December. About the program and performers: RJ Spangler speaks about the history of Detroit's jazz & blues roots and performs musical examples with an all-star band. RJ is a graduate of GPS, class of '75! About Larry: Born & raised in Aliquippa, Penn.,near Pittsburgh in 1947, where he got his start playing jazz, showing the ropes to his friend, jazz guitar great George Benson. Smith moved to New York where he played with some big names such as organist Shirley Scott, drummer Joe Chambers and multi-saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. For years, Smith bounced around from New York to New Jersey to Detroit (where he sunk roots after his mother moved here) and back. Larry had a special relationship with one the all-time great sax players - Sonny Stitt. Sonny knew & encouraged Larry going back to his teenage years, when passing through Pennsylvania. This lead to Larry touring with Sonny as a regular member of his group. Quite an honer for a man that plays the same instrument as the leader! In Detroit he lead his own bands & also played in Detroit jazz master Roy Brooks Artistic Truth band. Larry has a reputation as an old-school keeper of the bebop flame and a killer when it comes to the blues. As Charles Latimer said in the Metro Time "his specialty is ballads. He shuts his eyes, hunches his shoulders, and holds his saxophone like a prom date. The ballads are so touching they'd make the devil cry." Larry appears as a special guest on James Carter's 1996 Conversin' with the Elders & Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge disc, released in 2004. He has also toured with the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin. Drummer RJ Spangler has appeared on over 60 recordings and has toured the US, Canada & Europe quite a few times. He lectures on Detroit jazz & blues history and beyond his trio, he leads the Planet D Nonet swing band as well as a blues band. His latest release is "This Is What We Do" w/ the RJ Spangler on the Eastlawn label. Guitarist Oliver Nevels is another veteran player whom has recorded & toured nationally with organist Charles Earland, appearing on two of his CDs, including "I Ain't Jivin' I'm Jammin" for the legendary Muse label. He also toured with organist Richard "Groove" Holmes. Bassist Greg Cook is a Detroit main stay, having proven himself playing with the top of Detroit's jazz scene: Geri Allen, Roy Brooks & Marcus Belgrave & many others. He toured Europe with soul great Bettye LeVette and held down the bass chair in Rat Pack show for countless performances. Program recommendation - Italian Hall disaster

The Italian Hall disaster in Calumet, Michigan is one of the great unsolved mysteries of Michigan history. It involved the deaths of over 70 people - mostly children. It was, whether intended or not, a mass homicide. The tragedy evokes a lot of emotion in the area still. It is a really fascinating event that people continue to study today. The great Woody Guthrie wrote a famous song based on the 1913 Massacre as it was sometimes called. http://1913massacre.com/about-the-song/ There was a film done as well. There is a link, below, for a synopsis and the trailer for the film including Arlo Guthrie and a bit of the song by Woody Guthrie, too. Nice film based on the song.
