Scheduled for September 27-29, the three-day event will be held in Kalamazoo and is ideal for history professionals and enthusiasts alike. Registration closes at 5 pm on Monday, September 23. Participants can also elect to attend one of three pre-conference tours, which will visit 1) The Underground Railroad House and Celery Flats Interpretive Center, 2) historic downtown Kalamazoo, or 3) the Kalamazoo Valley Museum and WMU's new Zhang Legacy Collections Center. The evening will come to a close with the Annual President's Reception and State History Awards Banquet, during which the Society will announce the recipients of the 2013 State History Awards. Registration for the full event (including Friday's awards reception and banquet, Saturday refreshments and lunch, Sunday morning tour, and all regular sessions) is $149 for members of the Historical Society of Michigan and $179* for non-members. Admission for Saturday-Only (including all Saturday daytime sessions and lunch) is $109 for HSM members and $139* for non-members. Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Fall 2013 Grants Reminder

This announcement is being sent to several lists. Please excuse any duplication. This is a reminder that the Metro Detroit Book & Author Society has the following two (2) grants available: the Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award and the Dick Johnston Award. Information about these grants is below. The grants will be presented at the Fall 2013 Book & Author Luncheon on Monday, October 21, 2013, at Burton Manor in Livonia. The winners will receive a free ticket to the Fall 2013 luncheon and must be present to receive the grant. Grant winners are required to submit a 22’’ x 28” project report poster showing how the grant was used to be displayed at the Spring 2014 luncheon. Application forms with instructions and reporting requirements are attached. Applications are due on Monday, September 23, 2013. Completed applications should be send by either email or U.S. mail to the address listed on the application forms. 1. The Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award: $1000. This grant is awarded to a Friends of the Library group in the metro-Detroit area to support a program or project that fills a significant need affecting the library's patrons and community. The award was established to honor the late Elaine R. Irvin, who was a devoted member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board for many years. Elaine worked for the Friends of the Detroit Public Library and was dedicated to the principle that "good libraries need good Friends." 2. The Dick Johnston Award: $2000. This grant is awarded to a public library in the metro-Detroit area for the purpose of establishing or improving a library collection. The award was established to honor the late Dick Johnston, who was a member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society and served as its President in 1980 and 1981. Mr. Johnston was also President of the Michigan Library Association and Director of the Birmingham and Bloomfield Township Libraries. Hodges, author of the award winning Michigan's Historic Railroad Stations, and railroad scholar Graydon M. Meints, author of Railroads for Michigan. Participants may choose from a range of historical sessions or can attend presentations devoted to rail transportation in Michigan today. The Michigan Department of Transportation will be presenting on their ongoing work throughout the state and the Michigan Association of Railroad Passengers will be on hand to discuss current day passenger travel. This message is being sent to multiple lists; please excuse duplication. Are you looking for effective ways to promote your library, its programs and services? Then come to the TLN Adult Services Fall Workshop on Wednesday, October 2, from 9am-1pm at the Novi Public Library. The theme for the workshop is "Hello? Do You Know We're Here? Making Your Library's Presence Felt in Your Community." We know that our libraries have so much to offer, but how do we get the word out? This workshop will give strategies for promotion and partnerships that will help community members to view the library as relevant and valuable. The workshop speakers are: - Laurie Golden (Canton Public Library) will share tips for developing strong partnerships in the community. Canton Public Library received the 2013 LibraryAware Community Award for its work in connecting with the community. Discover ways to create a library that is truly valued by the community. - Bill Harmer and Anna Cangialosi (Chelsea District Library) will discuss ways to engage the community to build relationships. The library's highly visible "Geek the Library" campaign was the talk of the town, in a good way! Learn how community engagement can reap benefits for the library. - Kelly Rembert Ireland (Southfield Public Library) will provide tips and tricks to market the library and its programs to your community on a low to zero budget. Find out which types of marketing will work best for you and your library.
