A reminder about the Letters about Literature program and the deadlines. Letters from teens in grades 9-12 are due Dec. 10th and letters from children in grades 4-6 and 7-8 are due January 10th. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Library of Michigan is announcing the 2014 Letters about Literature program. We are again hosting this national program for Michigan. The Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program is a national program from the Library of Congress. It is reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. We have sent a letter and a sample entry form to libraries and schools. The 2014 letters will be due in two waves, which is new this year. Level III entries (grades (9-12) have a deadline of December 10, 2013 and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 10, 2014. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2014. Summer Reading materials and webinars

Now that the 2013 Summer Reading program is all wrapped up, we are turning to the 2014 program. The 2014 Science themed materials will be mailed this week and next week from the Library of Michigan. You'll be receiving the four manuals on DVD, the incentives catalog, and new this year, a partner incentives catalog and a handout about theme appropriate materials from the National Geographic Society. These will be sent to every library branch. Please also take a look at the upcoming Summer Reading webinars, starting next month. Jazz Duo Available

The Bryan Blowers Jazz Duo played for the 50th Anniversary Celebration at Parchment Community Library on Saturday, October 19. Bryan, guitarist and Andrew, bassist, played two hours of background music while our patrons feasted on cake and the unveiling of 12 historic photos mounted in the atrium. Highly recommended. Library code of conduct- digest of responses

Sincerest thanks to all the libraries who shared their best practices and advice. Below please find a condensed digest of responses regarding the placement, implementation, communication and enforcement of codes of conduct in libraries. The responses received were from public and academic libraries. Library Code of Conduct placement: - On library website - In lobby or near entrance - Display case with other library information - Several points around library - Sections of code broken out on smaller signs (no cell phones, no food/drink, etc...) - Available for check out - Poster size - 8.5x11 Code enforcement: There were several models for code enforcement. The "three strikes" rule seemed to be a common theme. Step 1: Provide copy of code to patron Step 2: If behavior continues, ask the patron to leave. Step 3: If still non-compliant, inform patron that their library privileges will be revoked for set period of time Step 4: Call security/police if all other steps do not remediate issue. Three strikes rule- for smaller issues two warnings given and then asked to leave. For severe issues, such as safety issues, patrons asked to leave immediately. Case by case review of violation. Violation forms 1st, 2nd and 3rd with instructions on how to appeal. Code enforcement follow up: - Short, specific notes placed in patron record Challenges: -Hygiene issues or other issues that need to be reviewed on case by case basis Advice: "Enforcement is always a challenge. It requires constant work. My recommendation would be to keep at it, and expect if you are trying to change a particular behavior, it will take many months, even years depending on the issue in question." "Cameras are particularly helpful in many cases. Do not underestimate the problems they can solve. If you get them, make sure patrons know to what degree they are being monitored or recorded. For instance our signs say- 'Some areas of the library may under recorded video surveillance.' " Thank you again. I hope that this information will be of use to the group. The Vicksburg District Library seeks an energetic, innovative team-oriented professional to work as our Reference and Young Adult Librarian. Primary responsibilities include developing, implementing and promoting services to young adults, providing reference services, computer assistance, and assisting with collection development. Part Time- 30 hours per week. This position includes evening and weekend hours. Qualifications: This position requires strong customer service, internet and computer tech skills. Applicants must possess good people and communication skills, and the ability to deal with the pressures of public service work in a busy environment. Ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of a wide variety of print, database and web resources, experience assisting patrons with computers, and prior experience with teen programming.
