Submit Your Proposal for the 2014 Rural Library Conference

It is time to begin thinking about the 2014 Rural Libraries Conference. The event will be held April 30-May 2, 2014 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. The Library of Michigan and the Rural Libraries Conference Program Committee encourage you to submit a proposal for the conference. Submit your proposal here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RLC2014 The Rural Libraries Conference has a long tradition of providing a forum for the staff, trustees, and advocates of Michigan's small and rural libraries to share, learn and be inspired to provide the best library service to their communities. The 2014 RLC theme is Partnerships, People, Progress. Let's come together as a community to share our collective knowledge of imaginative, resourceful and successful library practices. How can you contribute? Bring your tried and true as well as your new and inventive practices to share with your Michigan library colleagues. If it's working well for you, chances are good that others could benefit from hearing about it. We will be showcasing up to 50 presentations at the 2014 conference. The RLC Program Committee invites you to consider the following conference tracks as you design your program proposal: * Library Technology or Digital Literacy * Services to Individual Populations (youth, seniors, unemployed, entrepreneurs, etc.) * Library Programming * Engagement, Collaboration & Partnerships * Administration and Management Presenters will be required to provide an electronic copy of session materials by April 1, 2014 that will be on a flash drive to all conference attendees. The Library of Michigan will provide a lead presenter with one conference registration and one night's lodging at the Grand Hotel (or other hotel accommodation up to the state rate of $75 per night) per day of presenting. Program selection is a peer-reviewed process. The RLC Program Committee will evaluate the content of your proposal for relevance to the conference tracks, clarity, originality, and timeliness. The experience and qualifications of presenter(s) will also be considered. Proposals are due Monday, October 21, 2013 in order to be considered for inclusion in the 2014 conference. Please note that proposals with significant incomplete information will not be considered. The deadline to register for the upcoming Advanced E-rate Training session is Monday, October 21. To register, please visit: http://www.solutionwhere.com/lom/cw/showcourse.asp?40 Registration is $30 per person. This includes refreshments, lunch and class material. The training will be held on Tuesday, October 29 from 8:45-4:30 at the Library of Michigan. The 2013 Advanced E-rate Training will cover any updates provided by the SLD during their Fall Training Workshops. Attendees will also focus on procurement and the Form 471 along with other information needed to submit an application during the application window. Provided that the online Form 470 and 471 Training site is available, attendees will also review how to complete and file the Form 470 and the Form 471 online. This workshop will be a follow up to the Basic E-rate Workshop held in June and will focus on higher-level issues that are encountered during the application and review processes. Beginners are also welcome but should review the SLD web site<http://www.usac.org/sl/> before attending to familiarize themselves with the terminology and the application processes. Linda Schatz will lead the workshop and share information and program insights to help libraries successfully apply for E-rate funds. Creating Online Finding Aids and Reference Tools for Your Collections Friday, October 25 Presenter: Alexis Braun Marks, Archivist, Eastern Michigan University As part of its 2013 History Skills Workshop Series, the Historical Society of Michigan presents, "Creating Online Finding Aids and Reference Tools for Your Collections," with Eastern University Archivist, Alexis Braun Marks. Creating effective find aids and reference tools can be a real struggle for organizations that do not have trained archivists on staff. This workshop will cover standard formats and best practices for developing these important tools. It will also examine options for making these tools available online. The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon at the HSM Office at 5815 Executive Dr., Lansing, Michigan. Registration is $39 for members of-or those representing a member organization of-the Historical Society of Michigan. For non-members, registration is $79 and includes a one-year HSM membership. Robertson presented the award during the Michigan Library Association annual conference in Lansing. Lakeview High School Library in Battle Creek, and the Kent District Library in Kent County each received a 2013 Citation of Excellence, a trophy and $500. The State Librarian’s Excellence Award is sponsored by Roger Mendel and his late wife June Mendel. Gifts from Martin L. Gibbs and Carole Sorenson and from Elaine M. Logan supported the Citations of Excellence. “Libraries used to be a valuable old stand-by. Now they are leaders in identifying and meeting their communities’ quickly evolving and changing needs for information, digital literacy, and community connection and enhancement,” Robertson said. “The 2013 nominations all were filled with evidence of this in their narratives and letters of support. In the midst of swirling change, libraries provide ever evolving but constant support for Michigan’s residents in their municipalities, their schools, their institutions of higher education and in their workplaces.” The Library of Michigan (LM) recently commissioned the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) to record Bright Side Episode 13: “21st Century Libraries” to demonstrate the breadth and depth of scope Michigan’s libraries provide. “Take a peek. You may think you know what to expect from Michigan’s libraries, but you might be surprised by all that they offer,” Robertson said. The Library of Michigan Foundation and LM present the State Librarian’s Excellence Award and Citations of Excellence each year in part to keep the value and services of Michigan’s libraries in the forefront. It strives to provide 100 percent customer service and tireless engagement with its community. Board Vice Chair Patsy Hart noted in her nomination cover letter, “Our staff believes that the library is the community’s living room, and regardless of where you live, once you enter our library you are one of our neighbors.” The library’s costumed “Library Fairy Godmother” does in-house book readings and also gets out to other locations in the community to promote early childhood literacy. In partnership with churches and other local community organizations, the library has a holistic approach to meeting community needs. It is involved in providing free summer lunches for children in need and providing affordable prom dresses for teens from low-income families. Its Guitar Hero Contest; Battle of the Bands; and “Drummunity” community celebration event bring the community together in innovative ways. The community’s support for the library is invoked in a letter of support from the director of children’s services at their Community Action Agency, Mary Cunningham DeLuca. “Our agency recognizes the Litchfield District Library as a leader in early childhood education,” DeLuca said. Evaluation factors for the State Librarian’s Excellence Award are: Demonstrating that the library provides superior service to its customers and community in a cost effective manner; with a can-do attitude; and by always delivering on promises; and Demonstrating the library’s commitment to high standards of customer service through staff dealing with customers and the service community. Besides training high school students in information literacy, notably through her special course developed for library assistants, Lincoln also has shown exceptional commitment to facilitating learning about issues of race and diversity for both her students and the community as a whole. Lincoln has demonstrated very fruitful partnerships with classroom teachers on projects to incorporate electronic resources and online communication into the school curriculum and lesson plan. She worked with her colleague, Scott Durham, the school’s social studies teacher, to develop a blended learning project. Mr. Durham is spending several grant-funded months abroad visiting historic landmarks in Europe and Asia. While he is traveling, the library will facilitate online interactions between him and Lakeview High School students. Lincoln said, “Lakeview High School Library is truly honored to receive a 2013 Citation of Excellence. This is also the occasion to recognize the staff, teachers, students and administrators of Lakeview Schools who have supported the need for a successful high school library media program over the past 41 years.” The Kent District Library is a Class VI library, one of the largest public library systems in the state. It has 18 branches and serves over 395,000 residents. KDL’s focus on excellent customer service is embodied in its motto, “Convenience Is King.” Director Lance Werner said, “The Kent District Library is honored to be recognized with a Citation of Excellence from the State Librarian. This citation is a tribute to the KDL family that is made up of the Board, employees, volunteers, partners and customers who inspire us to provide innovative, convenient service that remains friendly and personal.” Kent District Library excels in early literacy programming designed to develop pre-reading skills in young children. This past year, attendance at these programs was 65,000. It also partners with the county’s Great Start Collaborative to provide free education for early childcare providers. Last year it offered 48 classes to nearly 2,000 parents and early childhood educators on all aspects of child development. It recently commissioned a special demographic study and public opinion survey, and will use the findings to identify areas where it can meet changing realities. Bob spoke at our library recently and was very well received. Those attending brought in a few items for him to value at the end of the program. Bob is a professor at Wayne State University's School of Library & Information Science and an expert on the used book market. Interested in pursuing a program with him? If you are looking for a well-organized program aimed at encouraging families to read with their young children, please read on. As one of the libraries that helped to develop this program, we are thrilled with the results! All seven of the libraries in Barry County are participating . . . and our families are benefiting! We launched the program in the spring and are now having kids finish. Feel free to contact me with questions. "The concept of encouraging parents to read 1000 books to children before kindergarten is widely accepted as a way to prepare children for elementary school. The Jr. RangerLand "Explore 1000 Books" makes this journey fun and easy for parents. This beautifully illustrated book was designed and developed with the help of a terrific group of librarians from Barry County, Michigan. They worked as a group to put together helpful reading tips and meaningful quotes to expand this journal into a reading tool. There are opportunities throughout the book for children to draw pictures and practice writing their name, making this a keepsake long after the completion of the program.
