Hi, The MI PR Group's next meeting will be on Thursday, November 7th from 10am - 12pm at the Novi Public Library ( http://www.novilibrary.org/) . Our main discussion will be on methods of communication. Should we put all of our effort into social media, should we scale back on printed flyers, are e-newsletter effective, etc. Plus a chance to go around the table with local updates to gain great ideas from each other. The MI PR Group is designed as an informal PR group to work together and share our successes, learn from our non-successes and put our brains together to try and tackle issues and help all of our libraries. Update: "InfoTrac" designation on Gale Resources in MeL

Hi everyone - Please excuse cross-posting. There was a misunderstanding with Gale concerning the term "InfoTrac." "InfoTrac" has been re-added to the Junior Edition, Newsstand and Student Edition databases on the MeL databases page ( http://mel.org/index.php?P=SPT--BrowseResourcesDatabases&ParentId=617) The term "Collection" has been re-added to the Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine & Psychology databases on MeL's Heath & Wellness Gateway. The primary responsibility is to provide reference and readers’ advisory services to patrons at the public service desks at the Southfield Public Library. REQUIREMENT: An A.L.A. accredited MLS degree is required. Experience providing readers’ advisory and reference services for both adults and children in a public library setting is preferred. SCHEDULE: Substitute librarians work a varied schedule with an emphasis on weekend hours. The schedule is flexible and posted several months in advance. SALARY: The starting salary is $15.00 per hour with no benefits. Hello everyone -- If you are a City Library Director I'm hoping you'll be willing to share some information with me. 1) Do you report directly to your Library Board or your City? 2) Is your Library Board serve in an advisory capacity only or does it serve in a decision making capacity? 3) What role does your Library Board have in making financial decisions (budgeting, expenditures, etc.). 4) When setting or changing policies, does your Board do that or do they just make recommendations to the City Commission. Any information you're willing to share would be greatly appreciated. My family and I had a trip visiting (Manila,Philippines), everything was going on fine until last night when we got attacked by some unknown gunmen. All our money,phones and credit cards was stolen away including some valuable items, It was a terrible experience but the good thing is they didn't hurt anyone or made away with our passports. We have reported the incident to the local authorities and the consulate but their response was too casual, we were ask to come back in 2weeks time for investigations to be made proper,But the truth is we can't wait till then as we have just got our return flight booked and is leaving in few hours from now but presently having problems sorting out our bills here and also getting a cab down to the airport, Right now we're financially strapped due to the unexpected robbery attack, Wondering if you can help us with a quick loan to sort our bills and get back home. Sad News

The Ypsilanti District Library community mourns the passing of beloved librarian and co-worker, Miriam (Mimi) Chapman. In her 33 years of service at the Library, Mimi served as an Adult Services Librarian, Branch Manager, Interim Director, and Head of Acquisitions. She also managed YDL's Michigan/Ypsilanti Heritage Room. Mimi helped usher the library from the card catalog to the internet era. She was present for the arrival of three new bookmobiles, the opening of four new library locations, and the introduction of public internet computers. Her dedicated cataloging work made library resources searchable for our community. The library was an important place in Mimi's life and she considered it in many ways a second home. As Head of Acquisitions, she made connections with staff at libraries throughout Michigan. Her professional demeanor and unflappable attitude made her known far and wide. She will be deeply missed. A memorial celebration of Mimi's life will be held on Sunday, November 17 at 2 pm at the Ypsilanti District Library (located at 5577 Whittaker Road, Ypsilanti, MI). Microfilm Digitization.

I'm looking for advice on a potential microfilm digitization project. We have approximately 30 roles of a local paper that was sold to a larger conglomerate. The roles date from the 40s going through the late 80s with several gaps. I'm looking for the following: 1. Is there a question of legal ability since the paper was bought? 2. What are some suggested companies that folks have worked successfully with on projects like this? 3. Creating and maintaining the stuff online is another caveat to explore. Is anyone familiar with or had experience with this type of project and the costs associated with it? Please respond off list. Introducing MILibraryCard

MILibraryCard Logo A new service from the Michigan Cooperative Directors Association, MILibraryCard, is being launched and will begin on January 1, 2014! MILibraryCard is a new reciprocal borrowing program for public and academic libraries in the state of Michigan. Participating libraries will loan printed materials to patrons from other participating libraries that have a MILibraryCard sticker on their library card. It couldn't be easier! Just have your board/authorized representative review the guidelines, agree to and sign the MILibraryCard reciprocal borrowing agreement, and forward the agreement to the Suburban Library Cooperative. You can then order labels for your patrons' cards and window clings for your library! We've got a website, but it's not ready yet! We'll have the guidelines, agreement, list of participating libraries, label information (0.02 - 0.03/label), and window cling information ($1/cling) all in one place. It will be up and running next week! The guidelines and agreement are attached so you can talk to your staff and boards about participating. We'll keep the list of participating libraries updated daily so you know where the service will be available!
