Paying staff for book club/community read program reading time
by Andrea Ingmire 24 Feb '22

24 Feb '22

Hi all, We have several staff who are in charge of book clubs, participate in local community read programming, and/or statewide reading programs. Some of my staff read 10-12 books a year (or more) in support of these programs. In other words, they are reading for work. I’m interested in developing some type of system by which the library will give them paid time for part of the hours spent reading to support these programs. Not sure we can’t pay hour-for-hour for reading time but I’d like to offset this even a bit. Does anyone have a policy/structure for this type of work time? I’m thinking it could be included in our remote work agreements and would be a ratio such as: for every 4 hours reading you will earn 1 hour paid time. Up to x hours/month or year. I’m trying to figure out what this ratio would look like, how it would be tracked, and looking to find other Library policy examples (if they exist.) 😊 Thanks!! Holocaust Speaker Recommendation
by Jessica Luther 24 Feb '22

24 Feb '22

The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library hosted Holocaust survivor, author, and educator Irene Miller in the past and she has let us know she is ready to resume in-person events. We had a huge turnout to hear her speak about her experiences as a child during the Holocaust- fleeing Poland to Russia, being sent to a Siberian work camp, and an orphanage in Uzbekistan. She was an engaging and inspiring speaker. You can learn more about her at her website: http://www.irenemillerspeaker.com/home She is based out of Bloomfield Hills, so the Library provided overnight accommodations and reimbursed her mileage from her engagement the day before, in addition to an honorarium. Her speaking fees are flexible. I cannot recommend her enough to have at your library, school, or other community organization. *Jessica Luther (she/her) * Assistant Director *Alpena County George N.
