Online application for the Amanda Green Scholarship Fund will open on Saturday, January 1, with a deadline to apply of March 1, 2022. The scholarship will be awarded to a student expected to attend a graduate-level library science program in fall 2022. The Amanda Green Scholarship, named after a former library assistant in Teen Services at KPL, promotes the library profession to people of color. By providing monetary assistance to individuals seeking a master’s degree from an accredited library science program, the library hopes to promote the training and hiring of more librarians of color in Kalamazoo and other communities. In 2016, the Kalamazoo Public Library board passed a resolution that reaffirms the library’s commitment to, “address equal justice under the law, racial justice and institutional racism, social-economic divisions in our community and human dignity for all through our programs, services, policies, practices and the empowerment of staff to serve our community with these values as priorities.” In addition, the library’s 2019–22 strategic plan establishes Advancing Equity and Inclusion as a priority with a goal of developing and maintaining an informed and compassionate library staff that reflects the makeup of our diverse community. KPL is committed to making this a reality! Amanda Green worked at KPL for 23 years (1988–2012.) Hello, For the second year in a row, Capital Area District Libraries (CADL) will be airing a Christmas Eve Storytime on Lansing’s Christmas Station, 99.1 WFMK and 99wfmk.com<https://99wfmk.com/>. The storytime will air at 7 p.m. and repeat at the top of every hour until midnight. This year, Tom Shilts, youth librarian for CADL’s Okemos branch will read Clement Moore's 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. During the WFMK broadcast, there will be a special appearance by Mason Reeves, who plays Kristoff, the simple but kind-hearted ice harvester in Disney’s hit musical Frozen. Reeves will provide details on how listeners can enter to win a four pack of tickets to see the musical on stage at Wharton Center from January 26 to February 6, 2022. It ends with a special holiday message from me. This year, CADL is also excited to air our first Christmas Eve Storytime in Spanish on WKAR’s NewsTalk 870 AM/102.3 FM around 3:45 p.m. during the station’s Latinx programming. For the full posting and application, please visit us at madl.org POSITION: Team Leader: Bookmobile Operator CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time/ Union COMPENSATION: $17.05 SCHEDULE: 40 hours weekly ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Assist patrons on and off vehicle. * Circulation related responsibilities such as sorting, shelf reading, weeding, shelfing, etc. * Maintains bookmobile collection in collaboration with the processing department. * Responsible for using promotional or other materials during stationary activities, i.e. setting up tents, signs, book racks, etc. while parked and accepting patrons. * Develops and works out details concerning the deployment of the bookmobile with business and community partners. * Assists with the development of programming and other outreach efforts. * Recognize and address the diverse nature of the library's patrons and community. * Keep bookmobile steps, entrances, etc. free of snow and ice, or other hazardous obstacles. * Provides basic information and readers' advisory service for bookmobile patrons. * Assists patrons with renewal, issuing and replacement of library cards. * Maintains library materials collection and files in an orderly manner. * Develops a working knowledge of all MADL equipment and services. * Performs routine maintenance such as fueling, monitoring fluids and general cleaning, which includes exterior and interior areas. * Reports vehicle problems, need for service to Collection Development Specialist or Branch Operations Manager. * Record vehicle condition in a daily log. * Implements bookmobile specific programs and projects and participates in community outreach activities and events. * Serves as a backup for the delivery drivers or other library branch staff. * Assists in the processing department as needed. * May be required to work at other locations within the MADL system. Special note: Most of the worktime will be in the bookmobile, on the road and stopped at various locations. Limited access to restroom facilities. Driving and work will be done in a variety of different weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment may moderately increase during periods of travel or while the engine is running. It is common to work evenings and Saturdays to accommodate special requests or local events. Due to an internal promotion, the Ferndale Area District Library is currently seeking a new Youth Services Department Head. eBooks: Consumer Pricing Vs. Library Pricing

All, You are no doubt aware of the huge price discrepancies that exist when it comes to the price of a consumer eBook vs. the price of a library eBook. ALA and the state library associations, MLA included, have been working with legislators in an effort to find a solution. The goal is not to put publishers/authors/aggregators (OverDrive, etc.) in financial peril which serves none of us well but rather, to come up with a fair and equitable solution that benefits all, including libraries. Below are links to three articles related to this issue. The Axios article summarizes an eBook price equity law that is scheduled to go into effect in Maryland on January 1. The Association of American Publishers has filed an injunction for emergency relief in an effort to overturn the MD law. In New York, a similar law is on the Governor's desk. It will go into effect if signed, or even if the Governor takes no action. I have read of similar efforts taking place in Rhode Island. The article also mentions Massachusetts. On a national level, Senator Wyden (OR) and Representative Eshoo (CA) sent letters both to publishers (September, 2021) and to aggregators (OverDrive, etc. November, 2021) asking them a series of questions related to this issue. Summaries of these letters, as well as links to the letters themselves, can be found in the second and third link. I've yet to see any information released when it comes to the answers to these questions.
