Tichelaar has a PhD in Literature from Western Michigan University and Bachelor's and Master’s Degrees in English from Northern Michigan University. He is the owner of Marquette Fiction, his own publishing company, and of Superior Book Productions, a professional editing, proofreading, and book layout company. He is also the former president (2008-2019) of the Upper Peninsula Publishers and Authors Association. Tyler began writing his first novel at age sixteen in 1987. In 2006, he published his first novel, /Iron Pioneers: The Marquette Trilogy, Book One/. More than twenty books have followed. In 2009, Tyler won first place in the historical fiction category in the Reader Views Literary Awards for his novel /Narrow Lives/. He has since sponsored that contest, offering the Tyler R. Tichelaar Award for Historical Fiction. In 2011, Tyler was awarded the Marquette County Outstanding Writer Award, and the same year, he received the Barb Kelly Award for Historical Preservation for his efforts to promote Marquette's history. But few know anything else about him beyond his being buried in Marquette’s beautiful Presque Isle Park. Kawbawgam witnessed a period of intense industrial growth and unheralded change for Native Americans. Growing up at Sault Sainte Marie when the area was still claimed by Great Britain, his first memory was of armed Americans coercing his people into ceding their lands to the United States Government. As the son, nephew, stepson, and later son-in-law of Ojibwa chiefs, and in time a chief in his own right, Kawbawgam learned early that he would have to walk a fine line to keep the peace for his people. After temporarily migrating to Canada with other Ojibwa in disagreement with the American government, he returned to the Sault where he was recruited to help found the town of Marquette Kawbawgam would preside over an Ojibwa and metis community that ensured the white community’s survival during Marquette’s early years, only to be pushed to the community’s margins as the city grew and prospered. Yet the admiration and affection he won from whites as well as the Ojibwa ensured peace and a legacy that lives on today. Greetings, The Southeastern Michigan League of Libraries <http://www.semlol.org/index.php>, SEMLOL, is preparing a virtual program for the Fall membership meeting titled “That was Then, This is Now: Libraries Adapting for the Future.” Did your library implement any new programs, procedures, or policies in the last year and a half which have been successful or show promise? What efforts have worked well for your library that you plan to continue? What worked well in the moment and helped your library adapt quickly, but has served its purpose? We welcome presentations, lightning talks, and virtual poster proposals. We are also looking for volunteers to participate in a live panel discussion. Topics include but are not limited to: - liaison work, - new access policies, - outreach efforts to classes, faculty, or individual students, - events/programming/workshops - promoting community and social-emotional wellness for your campus, - maintaining connections with and between students, - collection development initiatives, - meeting changed information needs, - interactive activities, or - cross-curricular learning. Proposals may be for anything from 10 minute lightning talks to 40 minutes long full-presentations. Live or pre-recorded content is acceptable, however presenters are expected to attend the meeting for Q&A. Panelists are also expected to attend the meeting as the panel discussion will be live and interactive. The Fall SEMLOL meeting will take place Friday, Nov. 19, 2021 beginning at 2:00 PM on Zoom. Proposal Submission Deadline Is October 1st, 2021. To submit a proposal, please send the title, name of speaker(s), and an abstract of no more than 250 words to semlol.board(a)gmail.com by Friday, Oct. 1, 2021. Accepted proposals will be notified by Monday, Oct. 11, 2021. We would also like to have our panel in place by then, so please send your name and brief description (100 words or less) of your successes during this time by Oct. 1st if you are interested in joining the panel discussion. Mid-Michigan Digital Practitioners Fall Meeting Thursday, December 2, 2021 Virtual via Zoom REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN. The Mid Michigan Digital Practitioners (MMDP) will convene for its next meeting on Thursday December 2, 2021, via Zoom. As with all of our meetings, we will bring together a wide range of professionals and students engaged in creating and curating digital collections in Michigan and the surrounding region, including librarians, archivists, museum curators, historians, students, educators, and more. The goal of this meeting will be to provide an opportunity for regular and committed attendees of MMDP to come together with new and interested professionals and make connections. Bring a Question, Bring a Friend We will be holding an open forum at which anyone can bring questions to everyone attending. This is a great opportunity to bring a colleague or a friend, especially one who has never been to an MMDP meeting before. Draw on the expertise of fellow digital practitioners across the state and walk away with some tips to help you with a digital project. Whether it is digitization, metadata, intellectual property and rights management, writing an electronic records policy, web archiving, or working with specific tools like ContentDM, ArchivesSpace, MARCedit, and others, we are here to help. Proposals The MMDP Planning Group invites you to send your proposal for our December meeting. Proposals can be for presentations (15-60 minutes), 'birds-of-a-feather' discussion topics (20-30 minutes), demonstrations (10 minutes), lightning talks (5 minutes), or a virtual poster. This is a great opportunity to reuse a poster shared at another conference or share one that may have been canceled. We welcome proposals from anyone, but are particularly interested in proposals from smaller institutions and students! Library Director - Orion Township Public Library (MI) As the Orion Township Public Library continues to welcome its patrons both in person and virtually, the Library welcomes a new Library Director-one who will continue the Library's strong trajectory of service to its community. Working with 44 staff members and a $2.5 million annual budget, the six-member Board of Trustees, representing 39,500 residents, is interested in the candidate who is committed to serving both the Library's patrons and the community. Contributing to the Township of Orion, actively participating professionally for the betterment of Orion, supporting the Library's commitment to children and young adults, and supporting the Library's mission, "to be known for more than books," are key attributes of the next successful Library Director. Ongoing initiatives include a focus on technology innovations for improved service, expanding external partnerships, and developing and implementing a branding/marketing program resulting in increased outreach to the community. Orion Township, "where living is a vacation," was established in 1835 as a popular destination along the Detroit United Railway for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Detroit-a short 48- minute drive. 184 years later, Orion Township is a thriving community in Northern Oakland County (MI). Preferred qualifications include strong interpersonal communication skills, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, a thorough knowledge of library administration "best practices," knowledge and support of innovative library technologies, experience in budgeting and finance, facilities management, and demonstrated ability to lead and mentor staff. Levy experience, experience reporting to a governing board, and additional courses in public administration or business are desirable. Making Space for Active Learning in Your Library <https://learn.webjunction.org/course/index.php?categoryid=54&utm_source=SFM…> This self-paced learning experience to guide your library through the process of rethinking and reconfiguring physical space to make room for active learning and work with your community to create new services and programs. These courses originated with the Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces<https://www.webjunction.org/explore-topics/smart-spaces.html> project, which guided 15 small libraries from around the country through this process of transformation in their spaces and services. The participating libraries ranged in size of population served from 570 to just over 16,000. Examples of these libraries' successful application of the process are included in all three courses. Although the project was specifically designed to be actionable by small and rural libraries, the process can apply to any library type or size. The program is presented in a three-course sequence: 1. Active Learning and Community Discovery introduces the concepts of active learning and placemaking, and the tools and process for community discovery. 2. From Discovery to Design builds on the results of the community discovery process, adapting design thinking approaches to arrive at an actionable idea and a space ready for transformation. 3. Action Planning and Implementation takes the planning through the steps of making the space and service transformation happen. Participants will receive a WebJunction Certificate of Completion for each course they complete. These courses were developed as part of the Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces project, with funding from OCLC and a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), project #LG-80-16-0039-16.
