Virtual Youth Mental Health First Aid Training with MSU Extension
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 01 Sep '22

01 Sep '22

Back by popular demand! Sign up asap: Youth Mental Health First Aid Training September 8, 2022 8:30am-3:30pm ET Youth Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. This is a 2-hour self-paced course, combined with a 6-hour instructor led course and uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. * Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches participants a five-step action plan, ALGEE, to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis: * Assess for risk of suicide or harm * Listen nonjudgmentally * Give reassurance and information * Encourage appropriate professional help * Encourage self-help and other support strategies Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect the person with help. First Aiders do not take on the role of professionals - they do not diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. Instead, the program offers concrete tools and answers key questions, like "what do I do?" and "where can someone find help?" Certified Mental Health First Aid instructors provide a list of community healthcare providers and national resources, support groups, and online tools for mental health and addictions treatment and support. All trainees receive a program manual to compliment the course material. Who Should Attend This training is designed for Michigan library staff. Each class is limited so register early. A waiting list will become available once seats are filled. Cancellation Policy Participants who do not complete the self-paced portion, attend the full instructor led day or do not complete the post-work and evaluation will not be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. Cancellations must be received at least three business days prior to the class. Alternates are encouraged for those who register but cannot attend. Participants who do not complete the self-paced portion or attend the full instructor led day will not be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. Participants who register for a training and fail to cancel at least three business days prior and no-show will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. MeL Minute: Leading Information Literate Lives Using the MeL eResources
by Laura Warren-Gross 01 Sep '22

01 Sep '22

[A picture containing text, clipart, sign Description automatically generated]With so much information available across the Internet, it can be difficult to discern facts from mis- and dis-information. As part of the MeL Maven Badge<https://my.nicheacademy.com/mel/course/20651>, library staff are asked to help patrons engage in lateral reading, the process of reading across multiple sources to verify facts. In College & Research Libraries News<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> from Library & Information Science Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, “Rethinking CRAAP: Getting Students Thinking Like Fact-Checkers in Evaluating Web Sources<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>,” suggests that becoming information literate is increasingly difficult because people curate information to their own interests and beliefs which thus creates a filter bubble. The MeL eResources<https://www.mel.org/az.php> allow Michigan residents to access peer-reviewed journals that include well-sourced studies and transparent research methods. Political Science Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> is an eResource that can provide context to the daily news cycle as we enter the midterm elections. Examples of included publications are: American Journal of Political Science (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.)<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>: a peer-reviewed journal of the Midwest Political Science Association which is a general review of all disciplines of political science. The publication is available full-text and published quarterly. MeL includes issues from 1973 to 2022. Ethics and Global Politics<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>: a peer-reviewed journal focusing on diplomacy and international relations. The publication is available full-text and published quarterly. MeL includes issues from 2008 to 2022. Political Research Quarterly<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>: a peer-reviewed journal published by Sage Publications which includes articles and essays about Western politics and political science. This publication is available full-text and is published quarterly. MeL includes issues from 1993 to 2022. Another eResource from MeL that can help with lateral reading is Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ov…>. This eResource has a variety of primary sources, reference books, academic journals, news and magazine articles, statistics, interactive infographics, and opinion pieces to help navigate the gray areas between polarized black and white positions. Example issues that will be helpful this fall are Voter Registration, Electronic Voting, and Gerrymandering and Redristricting. In addition to the eResource content, MeL includes content and graphics to help library staff share information literacy basics in their communities. The Information Literacy Top 3 Basics flyer<https://mel.org/ld.php?content_id=59370617> can be printed or shared electronically. There is also an information literacy content package<https://www.mel.org/library-staff/promote/digital-print-assets> with text and graphics for social media posts (scroll down the page to Information Literacy Theme). Promoting the MeL eResources is a great way to encourage our patrons to live information literate lives. If you are having any issues linking to items on this page, please explore the MeL eResource Access Page.<https://www.mcls.org/mel/mel-databases/help/remote-access/> Contact melerhelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:melerhelp@mcls.org> for help.
