Keeping track of outreach patrons advice
by Julianne Novetsky 16 Nov '22

16 Nov '22

Hello, My library has recently begun providing delivery of library materials to patrons who are homebound. As this is a new service, we only have a few people that are currently signed up for the program. I am able to communicate with the patrons directly via phone or email to set up a time to drop off and pick up their items. This may become more difficult as the program continues to grow. My main concern is how to keep everything organized. What tools do you use to keep track of your homebound patrons and when their items are due? Do you have a set delivery schedule, or do you try to be flexible about when you deliver items? Most of the patrons I work with do not request specific books. I work with them to find out what types of materials they are interested in. Based on what they tell me, I choose some books that I think they will like. If your library does this, how do you keep track of the books you have given them in the past? So far, I have been keeping notes for myself, but I would like it to be accessible to other library staff in my absence. I think some sort of spreadsheet would work the best for what I am getting at, but I am having a difficult time visualizing it. If, for example, you use Excel, do you have a tab for each patron? I would really appreciate if anyone could share an example of how they keep track of this information. If anyone else is interested, I can summarize the ideas that are shared with me. Thanks so much for your help! Registration open! U-M Middle-school student/caregiver online Digital Wellness Symposium coming 1/21
by Kristin Fontichiaro 16 Nov '22

16 Nov '22

Hi, everyone! Posting this announcement in hopes that you know families who would be interested ... Calling 6th, 7th and 8th Graders and Their Parents/Caregivers! Middle school can be a time when kids are getting their first phones, texting, signing up for social media, and exploring the web on their own. Sometimes, online life is fun and rewarding, connecting us to our interests and the people we care about. At other times, it can feel overwhelming, addictive, or manipulative. The past two years have reminded us of how much we rely on our devices. We want kids to thrive when they are online, and we want parents and caregivers to have confidence and tools for supporting that journey. Please join us Saturday, January 21st, from 9:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m., for the U-M Digital Wellness Conference! We’re looking for two-person teams (middle schooler plus parent/caregiver) to join us on Zoom for a fun morning of learning, conversation, and activities about healthy online behaviors. There will be time for tween/teen-only activities with U-M students, time for adults to engage Q&A with the featured speaker, breaks to get up and move around and at-home conversation prompts or challenge activities to complete together. Our Keynote speaker will be an expert on digital wellness and health from CommonSense Media. Each family that participates will receive a Digital Wellness care package after the symposium which includes the book Raising Humans in a Digital World: Helping Kids Build a Healthy Relationship with Technology <https://www.amazon.com/Raising-Humans-Digital-World-Relationship/>. As well as some fun Michigan swag! There is a small fee associated with participation ($15 per family), this fee helps to cover the cost of the symposium. However, we do not want the fee to deter anyone so we have a free option as well. Please choose the option that works best for your family. Thanks! by AW Cierra Bakovka 16 Nov '22

Hi all, We have a lovely community member who would like to do a fundraiser for the library as a memorial for her grandmother, but isn't sure how to get started or go about it. I'm afraid I don't have much experience with this either. Have any of your libraries been through something similar or have any advice? Thank you! The program covers the post-Civil War South, the murder of Emmett Till, and the start of Civil Rights movement. The movie "Till" also came out recently which could be a draw. Wireless Printing For Patrons
by Anna Merritt 16 Nov '22

16 Nov '22

Hello All, Curious to hear from libraries who offer wireless printing for their patrons- Is this a featured built into your actual print OR is this a service you use on your computer to receive the information and send it manually to the print (like a public Dropbox)? If it is the latter, how do you maintain security on behalf of your patrons? Do they agree to terms & conditions before they send it? Any feedback would be most appreciated!
