Adding open hours?
by Don Priest 05 Jan '23

05 Jan '23

I am hoping to be able to add more open hours later this year; we are not open on Fridays, and I'd like to offer at least a few hours of service. Normally, we are open 10am - 9pm Monday through Thursday, then 10am - 5pm Saturdays. I don't think we'll be able to offer a full 7 hours like we do on Saturday, I want to start smaller with about 4 hours. I'm not sure when to put those hours, though, morning or afternoon? I'm sure someone will be displeased no matter what we do! I'd love to hear from libraries that are open for a short time any day of the week, and how you decided upon what hours to offer. I'm also interested in hearing from anyone that may have added hours like this recently, and how it has worked out, any changes you needed to make, etc. I'm not sure how to handle staffing, for instance; can I get by with our current staff, or does that spread us too thin the rest of the week? Lots to consider, I appreciate all input! Donald Priest Director Southgate Veterans Memorial Library 14680 Dix-Toledo Rd. Southgate MI 48195 734-258-3002

Hello, Does anyone have examples of what their library's public relations report looks like? We use what is provided from HootSuite (our social media management tool) but we were curious to see how other libraries organize their reports. Thank you very much, -- Laura Puckett PR and Technology Instruction Associate Librarian Van Buren District Library 200 N Phelps St Decatur, MI 49045 269-423-4771

Seeking Michigan Authors
by Jean Fellows 05 Jan '23

Hello All: I'm seeking a resource/list etc. of Michigan authors and poets with contact information, so I can invite them to our Author Events to share and promote their books at our library. I can't seem to locate a comprehensive one-- does anyone know if such a thing exists, and if so can you share it with me? Or what other resources you use to locate authors for your library? Thanks! -- Jean Fellows (she/hers) Programming Coordinator Grand Ledge Area District Library 131 E. Call for Poetry
by Betsy Myers 05 Jan '23

05 Jan '23

There are just 20 days left to enter Poets' Night Out 2023! Do you or do you know someone who lives in, owns property in, or attends school in Alcona, Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, or Wexford counties AND loves to write poetry? If so, submit entries by the 25th of January either dropped off at the Traverse Area District Library (main library) OR postmarked by that date. There are specific submission instructions for seniors, students and everyone else which can be found at tadl.org/pno. There are even submissions for classrooms--so if you know a teacher who may be interested in submitting class poems--send this info their way. Poets’ Night Out is an annual juried poetry contest and poetry reading event. Winners will have their poems printed in an annual chapbook as well as being asked to read their poems at an evening event on Sunday April 23, 2023 at 7:00pm. This is a fun, relaxed, no pressure event where everyone just loves poetry and wants to celebrate and bask in the ambience of beautiful words. Help spread the word! We want to break submission records this year! Attached is a poster of the event if libraries would like to post. (tyia) -- *Betsy Myers* Reference Department Interlibrary Loan/Programming *Traverse Area District Library* 610 Woodmere Ave Traverse City, MI 49686 231 932-8502 I just finished The Whittiers by Danielle Steel. It was a nice, sweet, all about family read. I also just listened to the latest by Phillip Margolin, Murder at Black Oaks and was pleasantly surprised my favorite narrator Therese Plummer read it! Highly recommend.

Kennedy (Brimley, MI) <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…>SHARON M. KENNEDY* resides on the land of her youth near the country town of Brimley in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She’s surrounded by childhood memories and a way of life that is no more. Instead of relying on intricate plots and schemes, her stories are driven by the characters and their interactions with each other, their teachers, and their parents. The authenticity and innocence of the kids will remind adults of days gone by. Ms. Kennedy writes a weekly newspaper column for /The Sault News/ and the /Cheboygan Tribune/. She authored /Life in a Tin Can/, a random collection of previously published columns. Sharon's most recent book, /View from the SideRoad: A Collection of Upper Peninsula Stories/ was just released. Her work also appears in all seven issues of the /U.P. Reader/. Image of the book cover for "The SideRoad Kids: Tales of Chippewa County" <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…>"There are many books that detail the history of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These are often rigorously researched and documented (some may be less so) and they represent an important aspect of the way we understand this strange little corner of the world. /The SideRoad Kids: Tales from Chippewa County/ is not that kind of book. It is a fictional retelling of the life of Sharon M. Kennedy, the stories of the time she spent growing up on the east end of the U.P., and the myriad characters that she grew up with. Each chapter is a story about Yooper life, a mixture of back-country living and 1950’s nostalgia that is reminiscent of Jean Shepherd’s /A Christmas Story/. And Kennedy does indeed include a Christmas story in her book, one that takes the kids on a trip that is a little more like /Gift of the Magi /than they bargain for. The kids in the book, with names like Flint, Candy, and Squeaky, could easily be any of the kids we all grew up with, familiar in their idiosyncrasies, lovable in their innocence. /The SideRoad Kids: Tales from Chippewa County/ <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…> is a great little slice of the Upper Peninsula. Even though it’s set in the 50’s I can see similarities to the people that I grew up around in the 80’s, so I expect that those would be familiar to anyone from the area. This book is great for readers of all ages, a short story collection that is part non-fiction, part fiction, and all enjoyable. -- Read the complete review <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…> at the /U.P. Hi Alexis (and all Michlib), We've started using a Michigan-Notable-Books(a)michigan.gov<mailto:Michigan-Notable-Books@michigan.gov> for a lot of our communication related to the Michigan Notable Books program, including getting MNB stickers to libraries. Additionally, you can always email our general reference account Librarian(a)Michigan.gov<mailto:Librarian@Michigan.gov>. Alexis, I'll follow up with you off Michlib to see about getting you stickers. I should alert everyone that the 2023 Michigan Notable Books list will be announced this month. Once the Detroit Free Press announces the list in one of the upcoming Sunday issues this month, we'll have the list available on www.Michigan.gov/NotableBooks<http://www.Michigan.gov/NotableBooks> along with other content libraries can use for promoting the 2023 selections and program.
