MCLS wants to hear from you!
by Pam Seabolt 04 Jan '23

04 Jan '23

As MCLS prepares to embark on a strategic planning process in 2023, we want to engage with the library community in Indiana and Michigan through a series of Community Conversations. This engagement process is an opportunity to hear from our community – staff from libraries and affiliated associations throughout Indiana and Michigan - about their aspirations and concerns. The knowledge gathered will help inform MCLS's future priorities as we plan how to serve you more fully over the next several years. You don’t need to be an expert; come share your perspective! We will facilitate 12 virtual Community Conversations via Zoom between Feb. 6 and 18 at a variety of times. The Conversations are open to any library staff in any type of library in Indiana and Michigan. For more information, including dates, times, and links to register, please visit https://www.mcls.org/engagement/community-conversations-2023. Once you register, you will receive a link to join us. Spots are limited, so reserve your space today! We look forward to engaging with you! ******************************************* Pamela Seabolt (she/her) Manager Engagement, Consulting, and Training Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) (517) 489-4069 seaboltp(a)mcls.org<mailto:seaboltp@mcls.org> [RcWTnUR6YwEIAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==]<https://www.facebook.com/mcls.org> [I3XQAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==] <https://twitter.com/mclsorg> [MjwHAfwDVdeoQrkJo6wAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==] <http://www.mcls.org/>

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training - Virtual
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 03 Jan '23

03 Jan '23

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Tuesday, January 10, 2023 8:30am-3:30pm ET Youth Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. This is a 2-hour self-paced course, combined with a 6-hour instructor led virtual course* and uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. * Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches participants a five-step action plan, ALGEE, to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis: * Assess for risk of suicide or harm * Listen nonjudgmentally * Give reassurance and information * Encourage appropriate professional help * Encourage self-help and other support strategies Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect the person with help. First Aiders do not take on the role of professionals - they do not diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. Instead, the program offers concrete tools and answers key questions, like "what do I do?" and "where can someone find help?" Certified Mental Health First Aid instructors provide a list of community healthcare providers and national resources, support groups, and online tools for mental health and addictions treatment and support. All trainees receive a program manual to compliment the course material. *Full participation in the virtual course is expected, this includes having a microphone and video functions. Who Should Attend This virtual training is designed for Michigan library staff. Each class is limited so register early. A waiting list will become available once seats are filled. Cancellation Policy Participants who do not complete the self-paced portion, attend the full instructor led day or do not complete the post-work and evaluation will not be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. Cancellations must be received at least three business days prior to the class. Alternates are encouraged for those who register but cannot attend. Participants who do not complete the self-paced portion or attend the full instructor led day will not be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. FW: Special Collections Update -- New Year's Eve 2022
by Oster, Adam (MDE) 31 Dec '22

Happy New Year!, 2022 in Review, Ancestry.com Library Edition, & Local History Collection Evaluations [Library of Michigan logo] Special Collections Update - New Year's Eve 2022 Happy New Year!, 2022 in Review, Ancestry.com Library Edition, & Local History Collection Evaluations [LM Interior]Happy New Year from the Library of Michigan! The Library of Michigan's staff wishes you all the best in the New Year! As we finish up 2022, we still have a few holiday closures to work around. The Library of Michigan will be closed from Thursday, December 29 at NOON through Monday, January 2 for the New Year's Holiday. We will return to our normal schedule starting on Tuesday, January 3: Monday through Friday 10AM - 5PM Saturdays 10AM - 4PM ________________________________ 2022 in Review at the Library of Michigan As we soon transition from 2022 to 2023, it's important to reflect back on the last 12 months of activities for the Library of Michigan's Special Collections staff. 2022 brought a wide range of "New" throughout the year. Three new faces joined the Special Collections ranks in the form of Library Technician Betsy Bacon, Law Reference Librarian Eric Kennedy, and Digitization Librarian Jennifer Sasota. The Library of Michigan's website went through a complete refresh as part of a multiyear statewide website content management replacement project<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> to update and replace over 110 State of Michigan executive branch websites. Adam Oster and Jennifer Sasota worked with Library Development's Becky Wartella to transition the Library of Michigan's website through this process. Two new study rooms are now available in the Law Library for small-group meetings or individual study. Additional online resources continue to be added to our remotely accessible database collection<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. ReadMichigan.org<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>'s collection of Michigan publications has expanded with more titles. Furniture original to when the Library of Michigan first opened in 1988 has been replaced with updated pieces that both meet modern needs as well as stay true to the original style and feel of the facility. Finally, the Library updated its catalog system, which staff continue to refine and improve. Special Collections staff have equally balanced the "New" with keeping up valuable, longstanding services and traditions. The 2022 Night for Notables event was the largest celebration of Michigan Notable Authors in recent memory. 3 years of Michigan Notable Books<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> authors (2020, 2021, and 2022) where honored during the Night for Notables event on April 30, 2022, which featured musician, activist, and 2019 Michigan Notable Books honoree Wayne Kramer as the keynote speaker. The Library of Michigan has proudly taken on the administration of the Michigan Author Award<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Historian Larry Massie was honored at the beginning of 2022 as the 2021 Michigan Author Award recipient. Furthermore, Library of Michigan perseveres in celebrating and promoting literacy as the home to the Michigan Center for the Book<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Engagement with our patrons occurred in a wide variety of ways in 2022. Staff served the residents of Michigan through virtual/in-person programs, tours, providing speakers for organizations, and assisting Michigan libraries/historical organizations in evaluating their local history collections. Special Collections explored new opportunities to partner with sister divisions within the Michigan Department of Education<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> to promote literacy, reading, and research skills. Staff also worked to promote the Library of Michigan's collections and services to State of Michigan employees throughout the Lansing Capitol Complex and to the outstate facilities across all of Michigan. Many activities from 2022 will serve as a building block for future patron engagement in 2023. A key partnership in 2022 has been collaborating with our good friends at the Michigan State Capitol to develop a joint exhibit honoring former State Librarian Harriet Tenney. Partnerships are invaluable and Special Collections looks forward to expanded cooperation with the Michigan State Capitol staff as well as with other organizations such as the Historical Society of Michigan<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>, Historical Society of Greater Lansing<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>, and many more. It is equally vital in enlisting the assistance of our patrons in tracking down rare and unique items to add to the Library's collections. The #HelpLMFind hashtag campaign has been a fun way to alert patrons of the Library's needs and it will continue into 2023. Thank you for joining the 2022 journey with the Special Collections staff of the Library of Michigan! We look forward to all that 2023 has to offer. [2022 In Review Photos] Photos from throughout 2022 ________________________________ [Ancestry Library Edition]First Virtual Program of 2023: Ancestry.com Library Edition 2023 brings another year of Library of Michigan programs that are available for members of the public. Special Collections staff will make onsite visits to provide a wide range of guidance as organizations tailor their collections to best fit their mission and community. Topics discussed often include determining the scope of the collection, developing collection development policies, identifying programming and promotion opportunities, and other relevant procedure considerations. Recently Reference Librarian Matt Pacer and Michigan Documents Librarian Bernie Bartlett made visits to Herrick District Library<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> in Holland and Flat River Community Library<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> in Greenville.
