The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce its 2022 Virtual Volunteer Fair to be held on September 14, 2022, from 3:00 pm -5:00 pm CT. The fair will be an opportunity for ALA Members to drop in and speak with committee members and/or staff liaisons from various ALA groups that offer volunteer opportunities, including ALA Association committees, Divisions, and Round Tables. This is an opportunity for members to ask more specific questions about a committee or group's work, time commitment, typical schedule, how to volunteer, etc! [Text Description automatically generated with low confidence] NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT August 10, 2022 [cid:fd5bd5ce-b8b2-429f-ab59-590eb57c83b1] Ann Kaskinen receiving award from Dr. William Miller of MAISA 2022 MAISA Education Fellowship Award presented to Ann Kaskinen of MeL Lansing, MI—Ann Kaskinen, the K-12 MeL Engagement Specialist for the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS), is the 2022 recipient of the MAISA Education Fellowship Award. This award is given each year to an individual or organization who, among other qualities, places service above self-interest, advocates for the programs and services of public education, has shown leadership in support of public education, and has performed public service on behalf of MAISA, ISDs or K-12 education. Ann began her career teaching high school English, social studies, and public speaking. After earning a library degree from Central Michigan University, she worked for 16 years as a K-12 Library-Media Specialist and gained additional experience as an ISD consultant, teen librarian for a public library, and government documents intern. She currently works with K-12 educators throughout Michigan to help them use the eResources in the Michigan eLibrary that support the MDE Academic Standards, the Essential Instructional Practices in Literacy, MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students), and information literacy. Ann received the MAISA Education Fellowship Award for her exceptional work assisting ISDs during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to helping ISDs gain access to digital texts through the Michigan eLibrary (MeL), she delivered over 80 training sessions for 30 different Michigan ESAs/ISDs (Educational Service Agencies/Intermediate School Districts) and worked closely with literacy coaches throughout the state. The award ceremony was held during MAISA’s 2022 Summer Conference in Traverse City on June 23. A host of urgent needs emerge around FEMA applications, landlord-tenant disputes, property issues, required documentation, and more. Libraries can play a crucial role connecting people with civil legal issues to resources and information that can help. Join this webinar to learn how to apply reference skills to support community members through this civil legal turmoil and guide them toward positive outcomes. A legal aid attorney and a law librarian will share insights based on their personal disaster experiences to introduce library staff to civil legal issues that may arise during a variety of natural disasters. And building on its Creating Pathways to Civil Legal Justice foundational course series, in September WebJunction will be launching a new set of courses, Navigating Civil Legal Issues of Natural Disasters, which will address how libraries can support the civil legal information needs of patrons that arise in a natural disaster.
