No Detroit Free Press (and USA Today)
by Stacy Pasche 11 Jan '23

11 Jan '23

Hello, I'm trying to figure out how widespread this issue is. There is no longer delivery of the Detroit Free Press and USA Today in our area. The gas stations don't even have them available for sale. If your library is having the same problem, could you please let me know? One Seed, One State Registration is open!
by Pam Quackenbush 11 Jan '23

11 Jan '23

Hello! The MI Seed Library Network is happy to announce that registration is now open for the 2023 One Seed, One State initiative. Our selection this year is 'Grand Rapids' lettuce, a great garden plant with a Michigan Connection! Our apologies for cross-posting as we roll out this information to various listservs and mailing lists in an effort to reach all interested parties. As many of you know, the MI Seed Library Network operates entirely on donations. MSLN has plenty of seeds to distribute, but this year we are asking that participating seed libraries "donate" by printing out their own posters, brochures, seed packet labels, and make or purchase their own seed packets. We realize that not every seed library has the resources to do so, and there is an option on the registration form to request these items. We do not want anyone to feel like they can't participate because they do not have the items available - we will make sure you have what you need for a successful program. Files for the forms will be sent via email when the seeds are shipped to you. Seeds will be shipped beginning late January, but we are a very small crew and can only ship a certain number of kits per week. You will have them in plenty of time to publicize the program before planting time begins in March or April. Some of the materials are still being prepared, but the color poster is ready now and is attached to this email. Individual seed libraries please register using this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdqFwBReYVC-U0ZtCOj906L3GTiGAdYRKX… New this year is the ability to register multiple libraries. Some library systems prefer to receive and handle OSOS materials for their branch seed libraries at a central location. If this works for you, have one designated person apply for all the branches using the following registration form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdB6mk3P4suA_CCH3t1dJLKgFmsBYSYkPK… If you want each branch to handle their own One Seed, One State materials, have each branch register as an individual seed library. The Central Michigan Seed Swap in Midland will be held on February 25. If you will be attending, there is an option on the registration form if you would like to pick up your seeds at the swap. For more information visit www.centralmichiganseedswap.com As always, please direct your questions to info(a)miseedlibrarynetowrk.org. There is also a comment section at the end of the registration form if there is anything additional you feel we should know. Thank you for your participation in the MI Seed Library Network's One Seed, One State! Good morning, Could you tell me what your library does for youth programming age recommendations? Do you specify recommended age groups for certain programs, or do you always open it to all ages regardless of the program? LM's Library Science Collection - Digitization and Preservation
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 10 Jan '23

10 Jan '23

A hallmark of libraries are our special collections, such as local history materials. Special collections materials are frequently unique and available only in your library. So how can you improve access and protect historically valuable items at the same time? LM is highlighting topical Library Science titles from our collection in occasional emails. Here are selected titles on preservation and digitization purchased recently. You can search MeLCat for LM titles and you can also check our New Library Science Collection titles at https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/libraries/libsci<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.michi…>. Click on the ANSWER catalog link and use "Library Science Collection" as one of the search terms in the Advanced Search - Notes field and you will pull only the library science collection titles. REMINDER: Titles are available through interlibrary loan only right now, as our MeLCat delivery is temporarily offline while we prepare to move to a new catalog. You can find the information on interlibrary loan borrowing from the Library of Michigan here - https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/about/libuseguidelines/guideforl…<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.michi…>. The page references state employees, but libraries may also borrow from the collection through interlibrary loan. Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues getting a title. Digitization and Preservation titles: * Digital library programs for libraries and archives : developing, managing, and sustaining unique digital collections / Aaron D. Purcell / Neal-Schuman, 2016. * The complete guide to personal digital archiving / edited by Brianna H. The program will run three competitions between 2023 and 2025, awarding a total of $2.25 million. Audio and audiovisual recordings document vital, irreplaceable aspects of twentieth and twenty-first century life, but if the current generation of professionals fails to act, vast amounts of this history will be lost. Digital reformatting is currently the best available solution for ensuring the survival and utility of recorded content stored on fragile or obsolete media such as magnetic tape, grooved discs, cylinders, or film. Launched in 2016, Recordings at Risk has awarded more than $4.5 million over nine grant cycles. “Through Recordings at Risk, CLIR empowers nonprofit organizations to preserve and create access to information recorded on fragile and obsolete media,” said CLIR president Charles Henry. “Participants in the program are able to digitally capture and ethically share rare and unique historical recordings for the benefit of research and learning in the twenty-first century and beyond.” “We are excited about the opportunity to introduce this program to organizations that may be new to the implementation of audiovisual reformatting. We are eager to expand our outreach to diverse audiences and organizations that may be new to hearing about CLIR,” said program officer Sharon Burney. CLIR will open its next competition on January 17, 2023. Subsequent calls for proposals will be issued in January 2024 and January 2025. Awards will range from $10,000 to $50,000 and will cover direct costs of preservation reformatting for audio and audiovisual time-based media by eligible organizations working with experienced external service providers. To make their determinations, CLIR’s independent review panel will assess the potential scholarly or public impact of proposed projects, the urgency of undertaking those projects, the viability of applicants’ plans for long-term preservation, and the overall cost-effectiveness of the proposals.
