Applicants may also request funds to host digital preservation workshops. Applicants must draw on the knowledge of consultants whose preservation skills and experience are related to the types of collections and the nature of the activities on which their projects focus. When assessing the preservation needs of library, museum, or archival holdings, applicants should seek a consultant whose specialty is appropriate for the nature of their collections and who is knowledgeable about the preservation of collections in these types of institutions. The program encourages applications from small and mid-sized institutions that have never received an NEH grant; community colleges, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Tribal Colleges and Universities; and Native American tribes and Native Alaskan and Native Hawaiian organizations with significant humanities collections. Furthermore, organizations or collections that represent the contributions of under-represented communities are highly encouraged. Join NDL: Greg Bodker will discuss Birding, virtually, on 12/6 at 7pm

Northville Library to host guest speaker Greg Bodker virtually, on Birding and Birdwatching Northville, MI: View photographer Greg Bodker’s beautiful images as he discusses an enjoyable hobby and pastime, birding and birdwatching; Northville District Library will host Greg Bodker virtually using Zoom on Monday, December 6 at 7pm. Many people enjoy feeding our feathered friends, but did you know that birding is a form of citizen science? Many birders will track species of birds, share their findings and contribute to online databases, maintained by the Audubon Society or Rare Bird Alert to name a few. Greg will discuss: the excitement and enjoyment of birdwatching; differences between birding and birdwatching; how to attract more birds to your backyard; what kind of birds you may see in your backyard along with the appropriate feeders to install; how birding beyond the backyard leads to many enriching experiences; places to go locally for birding; the excitement of a bird chase; and stories from the field while doing his own birding . Greg Bodker has been a serious birder since 2006, combining his interest in birds, nature, and photography as often as possible. Greg has led birding trips for Michigan Audubon and served on its Board of Directors for three years. Currently, he enjoys delivering birding and nature education presentations to audiences throughout Michigan. He also has presented at San Antonio Audubon. Greg Bodker’s family owned Parmenter’s Northville Cider Mill from 1968 – 1991. He worked there every season for 23 years. Greg says, “Presenting to the Northville Community is really exciting for me. In many ways it is like a homecoming." Greg has birded in all of Michigan’s 83 counties and in most of North America. He is excited to report he saw his 625th North American bird species, a Tufted Duck, while birding in Southwest Michigan in 2019. Each weekly workshop will focus on one aspect of the grieving process. Participants will engage in drawing, writing, mental exercises and relaxation techniques to help them work through their grief. * Weekly Discussion Groups- These are virtual support groups, led by trained counselors that invite participants to share their experiences and gain insight into the experiences of others while navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, we are so excited to share our new Create Your Calm materials with you. These can be ordered - free to charge and shipped directly to your door! [Library of Michigan logo] Special Collections Update - October 8, 2022 New Furniture, 2022 Michigan History Conference recap, and 1879 Harper's Weekly feature [LM Interior]New Furniture at the Library of Michigan Visitors to the Library of Michigan will discover a few new changes within the Library's facility in Lansing. Over the last few weeks new tables and chairs have been installed in the atrium as well as throughout other floors in the library. The new atrium tables all come equipped with hideaway power modules that offer both electrical outlets and USB charging options - necessary resources for the modern-day researcher! Additionally, visitors will still see the iconic blue lamps that have always been a part of the Library's atrium since the Michigan Library and Historical Center was constructed. The Library of Michigan is grateful for the work of the DTMB Facilities staff<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> in making this project happen. This was the first in-person conference by the Historical Society of Michigan since 2019 and it was great connecting with attendees face-to-face. Digitization Librarian Jennifer Sasota, Reference Librarian Matt Pacer, and Community Engagement Librarian Adam Oster all spent time meeting with fellow Michigan history researchers and showcasing the services of the Library of Michigan at the Library's exhibit table. [2022 Michigan History Conference] Library of Michigan staff and 2021 Michigan Author Award recipient Larry Massie at the 2022 Michigan History Conference ________________________________ Blast from the past: Library of Michigan in Harper's Weekly Soon after the new Michigan State Capitol<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> building was formally opened on January 1, 1879, Harper's Weekly featured the new Capitol in a full-page spread complete with several illustrations in the magazine's February 15, 1879 issue. The illustrations included the exterior of the building as well as many interior rooms - most importantly, an image of the State Library! Prior to this point, the State Library had spent several years (1871-1879) on the third floor of the old State Block building throughout the construction of the new capitol building. The space in the Capitol served as the library's primary home until the bulk of the collection was transferred in 1922 to the State Office Building (now called the Elliott-Larsen Building) at the corner of South Walnut and Kalamazoo Streets.
