MCLS Virtual Dialogue about Motivation is Tuesday!
by Jenny Kobiela-Mondor 13 Jan '23

13 Jan '23

How do you get motivated about doing the tasks that you really aren't looking forward to doing? What strategies can you learn from others to motivate yourself to get all that work done? Motivation is the topic of MCLS's first Virtual Dialogue of 2023, on Tuesday, January 17, at 10:30am-noon Eastern (9:30-11am Central). Registration is open now at https://www.mcls.org/training-events/events/virtual-dialogues-2023. One of the bright spots during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic was our Virtual Dialogue series, and we're thrilled to bring them back. The Virtual Dialogues aren't a webinar or workshop, but instead are an opportunity for librarians and library workers at all levels and in all library types to talk about issues impacting their work. During the dialogue, we will spend time sharing thoughts, ideas, and insights with other participants. Additional dialogues are planned for March 15, May 11, July 11, September 14, and November 15, on topics that are important to you! You can register at the link for one, a few, or all of the dialogues. We can't wait to engage with you! MI PR Group meeting next January 17
by Kelly Rembert 12 Jan '23

12 Jan '23

Hi Everyone, The MI PR Group was created to bring Michigan library marketers together to share successes, learn from non-successes and to tackle industry issues together. Whether your job title is "Marketing", or promotion is just one of many hats you wear, this group is here to support you! We are skipping our December meeting but will be back on Tuesday, January 17 at 10am on Zoom. We have Barb Williams from the Library of Michigan as our special guest. She will be presenting: Data & Design: Best Design Practices for your Data. Data is a powerful tool for libraries. However, many fail to grab the attention of their stakeholders with visually unappealing charts and graphs. Strong design can enhance data and create a clearer message. This presentation will focus on design practices of data visualization. It will cover concepts such as design techniques to enhance readability and eye appeal. About the speaker(s): Barbara Williams is the Library Development Analyst for the Library of Michigan. Previously, she has worked as an Adult Services Librarian at Kent District Library for 10 years. She holds a BFA from Grand Valley State University in Art and Design and a MLIS from University of Washington. Barb combines her skills in art and design and library science to visualize data for Library of Michigan. Southfield Public Library is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. Minor patrons internet use policy
by Laura Puckett 12 Jan '23

12 Jan '23

We're looking at our internet use policy, specifically in regards to patrons under 18 years of age and issuing guest computer passes to minors, and we wanted to see what other libraries are doing. Could you share your thoughts/policies on this issue? - What does your library policy say about internet access to minors? Do they need permission from parents/guardians, do they automatically have access, can a parent opt out, etc.? - What do you do if a minor doesn't have their card with them? Do you issue a guest pass, pull up their account number, etc.? - What if the minor doesn't have a library card at all and does not have a parent/guardian with them? - Does this policy change at all depending on the age of the minor? Thanks for your help! -- Laura Puckett PR and Technology Instruction Associate Librarian Van Buren District Library 200 N Phelps St Decatur, MI 49045 269-423-4771

Help us spread the word: Middle schoolers & parent/caregivers workshop on digital wellness, Sat 1/21, 9am-noon
by Kristin Fontichiaro 11 Jan '23

11 Jan '23

Hi, everyone! We have some slots left for our workshop next Saturday on digital wellness, which has a variety of activities and conversations designed for middle schoolers and their parents/caregivers. We'd appreciate your help passing on the information to family, friends, or patrons who might be interested! *Calling 6th, 7th and 8th Graders and Their Parents/Caregivers!* Middle school can be a time when kids are getting their first phones, texting, signing up for social media, and exploring the web on their own. Sometimes, online life is fun and rewarding, connecting us to our interests and the people we care about. At other times, it can feel overwhelming, addictive, or manipulative. The past two years have reminded us of how much we rely on our devices. We want kids to thrive when they are online, and we want parents and caregivers to have confidence and tools for supporting that journey. Please join us *Saturday, January 21st, from 9:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m.*, for the University of Michigan Digital Wellness Conference! We’re looking for two-person teams (middle schooler plus parent/caregiver) to join us on Zoom for a fun morning of learning, conversation, and activities about healthy online behaviors. There will be time for tween/teen-only activities with U-M students, time for adults to engage Q&A with featured speaker Victoria Saylor of CommonSense Media, breaks to get up and move around and at-home conversation prompts or fun challenge activities to complete together. Each family that participates will receive a Digital Wellness care package after the symposium which includes the book Raising Humans in a Digital World: Helping Kids Build a Healthy Relationship with Technology <https://www.amazon.com/Raising-Humans-Digital-World-Relationship/>. As well as some fun Michigan swag! Registration is $15/family with a free option for those who need it.
