Responses: Do you have a current event book display?
by Rosemary Isbell 21 Nov '23

21 Nov '23

Hello, I received 2 responses from Libraries regarding my current event book display email when I asked the questions: - What is your display called? - Who is responsible for filling the display (one person or a team)? - Do you include follow up information on how the books relate to current events? - How has the display been perceived by patrons? *Response 1: * *Does anyone have a display that features books that relate to current events in their library?* Yes-- depending on the local or widespread interest of the current event. We haven't generally featured displays on what might be termed "Breaking News", except for BLM, vaccine awareness, vetting "fake news" etc. Other events include: Major national and some international holidays and Indigenous Peoples, American Indian Heritage, Black History, Women's History, Juneteenth, etc. Other: Voting Registration Day, Election Day, Banned Books, Pride Month, Constitution Week, Earth Week, etc. Displays hosted in the Main entrance area and children's dept for children's books on the featured theme. * If so, I have a few questions:* - *What is your display called? *We title each display appropriately to the theme. - *Who is responsible for filling the display (one person or a team)? *Programming Team: Marketing, with Adult and Youth services pulling related books. - *Do you include follow up information on how the books relate to current events? *Not usually the books, no. We include supplementary material on the display topic when available. Sometimes brochures, flyers, bookmarks, voting guides from League of Women Voters, national Voter Registration & State voting materials, - *How has the display been perceived by patrons? *Patrons generally respond favorably, and the books displayed circulate. Notably: We've had one "patron" (loose definition: never reads, checks out materials or attends programming; uses our internet and drops his wife's daycare kids unattended on our preschool storytime or juvenile dept) complain that we can't feature just certain cultural/ethnic groups ( Native American, Black History Month, BLM), we have to represent them *all*, (especially (his) Italian Americans). We did different features for a year, he never came back to thank or complain. *Response 2:* We don't have anything designated a Current Events display. However, we do have several display spaces and sometimes we fill one of them with books related to some current event. We did this when Russia invaded Ukraine. Thanks! Every year, our volunteers that create your manual dream up items that libraries can use out of the box, so to speak. Have you seen our 2024 stand alone printables yet? These have come a long way over the years and are worth revisiting if you haven't seen them lately. Here are some highlights: * For those pre-readers, we have a fun activity log that can easily be printed in black and white (or color!) and given to caregivers. This comes in both English and Spanish languages. (Page 7) * There are some very colorful maze activities (Page 24 with the biking pig is so cute!). * There's a super cute color by numbers printable sheet that would pair nicely as an activity to go along with a stargazing adventure storytime. Or use the space themed full-color I Spy sheet or both! (Pages 25 & 27) * For children, there's a summer adventure bingo card to check off all their summer activities (Page 35) and a summer reading bingo card (Page 37) that could be printed in color since they feature our Reading With a Yeti design by Rob Donnelly. Those both come in Spanish as well. OR - use what's in the bingo boxes and place those on a card that you design and print to make shorter work of that task! Include some local adventures in your community! * If you're thinking of doing a program around pirates or high seas adventures, use the 3D printable cut and glue boat that's in very brilliant red, white and blue. (Page 45) * For teens, there's a book genre bingo printable in both English and Spanish (Page 71) and a cool cut and glue robot craft printable sheet (Page 74), as well as some nature coloring sheets for some Zen coloring in the library (Pages 77-80). If you have ideas around helpful printable sheets you wish to see in the future, our Managing Editor of all things manuals, Alyssa Graybeal, would be happy to accept your suggestions for 2026 Unearth a Story here<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…>. Remember, manual access for most state members is provided to public libraries free of charge. Ask your State Rep<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> if you don't yet have access to the online manual. An online manual access code comes with all versions of the manual, including paper and USB. Adventure Begins at the Tom Green County Library in San Angelo, TX Submitted by Christina Taylor, Youth Services Consultant | Continuing Education & Consulting, Texas State Library and Archives Commission Tom Green County is located on the Edwards Plateau-a geographic region forming the crossroads of Central<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…>, South<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> and West Texas<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…>. Serving over 120,000 residents of the Concho Valley, the county library has a truly amazing youth services program including a makerspace, Teen Republic, and STEAM summer camps offered at its three locations across San Angelo. Tom Green County Library (TGCL) has developed a Toymaker Camp where participants engage with simple machines and basic circuitry. Each day, participants build a toy using common items and the engineering design process to get their toy functioning. Toy builds included inclined plane mazes, Automata theatres, pulley-spinner toys, light sabers, and rubber band racers. After students build their racers, they have a race to see whose car will go the farthest and fastest. Similarly, TCGL has developed a Rocketry Camp where students spend the week learning how to design and build rockets from scratch using RocSIM software. Beginner students have a goal of designing and building a stable rocket, while advanced students build egg lofters with an altitude and duration goal. The rocket launches which conclude the week are exciting for all to watch and have grown in popularity - attracting quite a crowd. These camps are funded through a Special Projects Grant<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…> from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and TCGL has maximised the impact of this funding by providing materials, training, and support for eight rural libraries throughout the state to participate alongside them. The Special Project Grant program provides funds for programs that expand library services to include all members of the library's community. It enables libraries to develop programs for populations with special needs or those having difficulty using the library. Programs focusing on community engagement or involving collaboration with other community organizations are strongly encouraged. Moreover, the Tom Green County Library further propagates their learning by providing tutorials for replicating this programming and making them available via their learning management system<https://cslpreads.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd…>-reminding us all that "Adventure begins at your library!" Lib of Mich Book Offers - Reminder
by Bacon, Betsy (MDE) 20 Nov '23

20 Nov '23

Hello - the Library of Michigan has free materials we are offering to the library community. To take advantage of this opportunity, see the information below and the attached spreadsheet. Feel free to forward this message to other library groups or listservs within Michigan. The attached list has been updated since the initial email two weeks ago to remove items that are no longer available. Content and condition The titles listed are extra copies of fiction and non-fiction (hard and soft cover) books submitted to the Michigan Notable Books program over the last year and either contain Michigan content and/or were written by a Michigan author. Also available are items weeded from our collections, and donated materials we cannot use. Most of the non-MNB items are old library books and come with library markings/stickers, but are otherwise in the condition noted on the spreadsheet. If you'd like to only consider the newer books, you can either sort by condition or publication year. How to request Please submit requests by email to baconb1(a)michigan.gov<mailto:baconb1@michigan.gov> . If you are local or passing through, you are welcome to schedule a time to select and claim materials on-site from 9am-5pm, Mon.-Fri. Email baconb1(a)michigan.gov<mailto:baconb1@michigan.gov> if you want to schedule a visit. Email requests are handled on a first-come basis by date and time. Some, or all requested materials may no longer be available at the point we receive your email. It may take a couple weeks to process the requests, depending on staff time and availability of RIDES totes. I will send you an email when I am able to ship the materials to you. Shipping We prefer to ship items via RIDES. If you are not in the RIDES system, we can ship via UPS and we will cover the cost of shipment. Email requests must include the title as noted on the spreadsheet, how many copies you want (if applicable), RIDES code or a delivery address (street address only, no P.O. box), contact name, phone number and email address. Emails should be directed to baconb1(a)michigan.gov<mailto:baconb1@michigan.gov> . Deadline If you are interested in any of these materials, please respond to this email no later than December 4th, 2023. Materials will be shipped as soon as time and resources allow.
